RIP. WWE legend Rowdy Roddy Piper

Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61 ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Piper -- born Roderick George Toombs -- died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood on Thursday night. He was discovered on Friday.

Piper was a wrestling icon -- one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the '80s, and even wrestled in "Wrestlemania I" back in 1985 ... squaring off against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T.

Roddy's rep tells us, "I am devastated at this news. Rod was a good friend as well as a client and one of the most generous, sincere and authentic people I have ever known. This is a true loss to us all."

Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2006, but last November he said he was cancer free. A family source tells us he was "cancer free" at the time of his death.

A family member tells us, "Our family is saddened by the sudden passing of our father and beloved husband, Roderick Toombs aka Rowdy Roddy Piper."

Roddy was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005 and was one of the top 50 villains in the history of the WWE.

Piper had a long relationship with WWE -- last wrestling back in 2008 ... but appeared on various WWE shows up until 2014.

Roddy is survived by his wife Kitty and their 4 kids -- including 3 daughters and son Colton who's pursuing a career in professional wrestling.

The death is especially shocking considering we just spoke to him on Friday and asked his opinion about the Hulk Hogan scandal.

When I was 16, I lived in a foster home and my foster brothers were huge wrestling fans. One of my foster brothers talked me into going to a wrestling match with him. Rowdy Roddy was there. I picked up a souvenir book, with pictures that I was going to give to a 9 year old kid I knew that was a huge fan, too, and went about trying to get autographs. I met this one guy who was with the wrestlers, he had started wrestling but developed a head injury and couldn't wrestle any more, but still hung out with them and traveled with them. He took my book into the locker room to get autographs for me and when he came back Rowdy Roddy was with him. Roddy tried to talk me into meeting him at his hotel afterwards, gave me the name of the hotel, and his room number. I thanked him but told him no. My foster brother thought I was nuts turning him down, but the man was like 27 to my 16 and I wasn't a fan like my foster brothers were. But he did get Hulks autograph for me, too. The kid was so excited when I gave him that book with all those autographs in it. RIP Roddy. (I still don't regret turning him down.)

He and Ric Flair are the original "tweeners", the bad guy "heels" who were supposed to be booed but had die hard fans regardless. I wasnt a big fan of his in ring work, but Piper was an OG who perfected the interview/promo segment with "Piper's Pit" in the 80s. RIP Hot Rod....

This is unexpected. Sad. I was never a big wrestling fan but along with the Bushwhackers, Roddy Piper was one of my favorites. My fondness for Roddy was solidified with him acting in the movie They Live. That movie is an 80's classic.

The last time i heard anything about Roddy was when he was in an episode of Celebrity Ghost Story.

Anyway, he, along with all the other recent celebrity deaths that's been posted on the org, will be missed.

RIP. rose

Life is short....

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.
