CALAIS, Maine (AP) — A 22-year-old man who was drinking and celebrating the Fourth of July tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, killing him instantly, authorities said Sunday.

Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home in eastern Maine, said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

"Fuck That Alligator": Man Killed Seconds After Mocking Gator Warning

Authorities say a 28-year-old Texas man was attacked and killed by an alligator “almost immediately” after being warned by a bystander not to swim in the water, replying “fuck that alligator” before jumping in

“I asked him please do not go swimming, there’s a bigger alligator out here, just please stay out of the water,” an employee of Burkhart’s Marina in Orange, Texas told KFDM. “The next thing I know, I don’t even know how long it was, I saw his body floating face down and then he’s up there for a couple seconds and then he gets dragged back down and pulled off.”

I didn´t know you had alligators in Texas. Are they an invasive species from Florida, or have they always been around in Texas? Ever seen one yourself?

Every year more and more dimwits endangering themselves and others just to hear something go bang. I wish they would outlaw fireworks. People can see them at a show.

Talk about a complete waste of time. Not 2 mention............in 1776, Black folk were picking cotton. What an uninformed way 2 spend a holiday celebrating.

It's not the fireworks, it's the people.

People are losing their ability to deal with real life and real-life dangers. Especially Americans.

Apparently the "Jints" pulled their deal for Pierre-Paul off the table. Hand techniques are critical for skilled pass rushers.

Why he would literally play with fire is beyond me.

No, it's just a matter of the media sensationalizing stories to make something seem like a huge problem when it's simply not. Millions of fireworks are bought each year by private citizens and used for their personal enjoyment, whenever you have millions of people doing ANYTHING there's always gonna be a tiny few morons that will injure or kill themselves or others and it's always 100% their own fault. I've handled thousands of fireworks over the years, never had any issues whatsoever. It's no different than driving a car, handling knives or using a circular saw. Don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine.

The Maine guy was drunk, if he had killed himself by driving or falling off a building or throwing knives in the air, would the same ignorant people who call for fireworks to be banned also call for cars, knives and tall buildings to be banned? You don't punish millions of responsible fireworks users because of the idiotic actions of a tiny few.

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

They put signs up a around our complex and I still had to put up with the damn noise all night and the next night too. We should not have to put up with that crap in a residential area. There's plenty of parks, beaches, stadiums, etc.

It's a nuisance.

Agreed. I outgrew them years ago. Every once in awhile I might watch

a fireworks display. As far as celebrating the New Year's and other

holiday's with fireworks, I pass. When I lived in an apartment complex they banned them. I don't mind neighbors playing with them but I had

to get on a teenager who lives on my street throwing firecrackers at a

girl in my yard. I said hell no dude you have to pick that shit up. lol

Exactly. Some people think it's funny to terrorize pets with those things too.

Fireworks are neither a necessity, a right or a privilege and the number of incidents is irrelevant. rolleyes

I agree with you.

But America seems hell-bent on "kid-proofing" life.

You go to other countries and people have a healthy respect for the dangers around them. Here, we need to post signs and guardrails and sometimes armed guards to keep people from getting too far to the edge of a cliff. Because if you fall, it's someone else's fault and you sue for compensation.

There was actually a great study that I'd posted here a few years ago, about how children's playgrounds have become so damned "safe" that kids are losing their ability to gauge danger. BAck in my day you knew that if you didn't climb that jungle gym with a tight grip, you'd fall and break something. Now everything is padded and shielded and baby-proofed so that there is no possibility of falling or getting a scrape on your knee...and it's affecting kids.
