Downton Abbey ending with season 6

From the NY Daily News:

‘Downton Abbey’ to end after upcoming 6th season, producer promises ‘usual drama' and 'added excitement’

The Dowager Countess was right. The upcoming sixth season of "Downton Abbey" will be its last.

Confirming reports from earlier this month, executive producer Gareth Neame said Thursday that the most successful drama in PBS history is ending because its creators don't want to stretch it beyond its natural lifespan.

"Millions of people around the world have followed the journey of the Crawley family and those who serve them for the last five years," said Neame. "Inevitably, there comes a time when all shows should end, and 'Downton' is no exception. We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans."

The sixth season, for which filming is now under way, will air in the U.K. in the fall and on PBS starting in January 2016.

Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Dowager Countess Violet, had said earlier this year that she expected the upcoming season to be the last. She said she "couldn't imagine" how Violet, for one, could go much longer.

The core cast will also return and Neame strongly suggested that most of the major storylines will be wrapped up this year - though perhaps the long-term fate of Downton, an ongoing concern for the characters, will have to be left in the balance.

"We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue," he said, "but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."

That's only slight consolation to viewers who will be left without the upstairs/downstairs intrigue, and to PBS, which must find something to replace a show that made public broadcasting a center of television water-cooler buzz.

Julian Fellowes, who wrote the show, said Thursday he had "no idea" it would become as popular as it did.

"Exactly why the series had such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types, I cannot begin to explain," said Fellowes. "I suspect the show will be a principal marker in most of our careers."

Fellowes has already moved into another U.S. television project. He's writing a series called "The Gilded Age" for NBC, focusing on 1880s New York.

In a hastily arranged conference call Thursday, Neame also said that looking back, the creators had "no regrets" about what the show did and didn't cover.

Had they known how popular it would become, he said, perhaps they would have spent more time on the pre-World War I world, "before everything changed."

While i wasn't one of those craze fans that made tea and scones to enjoy while watching the show, it has been a fun ride overall. One more year of Maggie Smith so YAY!

This is Downton, so maybe the Dowager will die early or at the end of the season.

That's a shame, I really like it. It's easy to digest and entertainging.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Just as well. It jumped the shark last season. Ending on a high note, or close to one, should be done more often. Sons of Anarchy ran out of material in the 4th season, and House of Cards needs to wrap it up, too.

Guess I picked a bad year to quit drinking...

The Edith storyine kinda jumped. There's no way anyone ever would've found out about that baby.

Mary testing the waters by sleeping with a beau never would've happened, not with a woman of her distinction anyways. But those are the things that put the soap in this opera.

Still well done and enjoyable.

But it has been five years. It ain't "The Good Wife", which seems to get better and better with each passing season.

I actually enjoyed season 5 more than 3 or 4 cause there wasn't a Major storyline everything was just bumps in the road that you could see actually happening.

I must say I enjoyed the princess going in on the Dowager Countess. She was not having it.

I DVR'ed one whole season a couple of years ago, deleted the whole thing...I never watched a single episode even @ the hype of its debut....I LOVE Dame Maggie Smith...Maggie is the Queen and The Woman but not even her highness could get me to watch even one episode.....

It's a great show. I will really miss it. The Brits know how to make tv shows that are believeable and aren't filled with plastic looking people. The acting on this show is superb and I love the fashion too. Very classy show.

I think season five was the best since season one.

I really enjoyed Rose's story line this season, which going in I didn't think I would.

I really like the show, but some of the storylines are straining credulity. The Bates' storyline, for example, has gone from Shakespearean to downright contrived.

They're ending it at the right time.
