Rate the last movie you watched

I guess the other thread hit its expiration date, so on with the ratings (and reviews)!

Last night we watched the last half of "Limitless" starring Bradley Cooper. I guess TBS scheduled this movie in anticipation of Cooper's Oscar chances. Whatever, I liked this movie a lot. And of course, as in all my reviews: ALERT - SPOILERS AHEAD!

So when we turned this movie on, I thought, "Great! I remember the previews of this movie and I always wanted to see it!" But I was afraid I might have missed some important stuf in the first half of the movie. But basically, nope! I had no problem picking up what was happening. This, of course, is the mark of a great movie.

Cooper has gotten ahold of these pills called NZT that make him super-smart. His brain power becomes "limitless", more or less. This is somewhat akin to time travel, in that it subverts the laws of physics (I guess). Which means that you REALLY have to suspend your disbelief because there are too many plot holes. Or maybe I actually DID miss some important stuff in the first half. I'd better to look at the Wikipedia plot summary first.

BRB!

Wow, did I learn some cool things! Not really much about the movie. It didn't clear up any of the plot holes. For instance:

-If Bradley Cooper was smart enough to hire a pharmacist to reverse engineer NZT, why didn't the Russian thug think of that, too?
-Why would the Russian thug want to kill Bradley Cooper if Cooper was out of NZT? What good would that do?
-Who killed Cooper's bodyguards and sent them their severed hands? I thought it was the Russian thugs but they sure seemed surprised when they found the hands in Cooper's safe
-Who keeps severed hands in a safe?
-How come Robert DeNiro didn't take NZT?
-Why on Earth did DeNiro do those Focker movies? I can't take him seriously any more. He tried to look tough and threaten to kill Cooper but all I could see was him making a fool of himself with Ben Stiller
-How did Cooper get ESP?

But putting aside all those polt holes, the movie was really entertaining. And it introduced me to Abbie Cornish!

She's cute as a button! This is her:

She's from Australia and has been in lots of movies I've never heard of. But get this - she's also a rapper! You have GOT to see this cute little Australian girl rap! WARNING: Remember that you can't unsee this:

She's going to tour as a rapper with someone called Nas. I think Nas is somewhat successful, so this is a big gig for her. How do you think she's going to go over on a rap tour?

I don't know but I might go see it! Representin'!

I give "Limitless" four severed hands out of a possible six severed hands (Gotta be an even number, right?)

starstarstar House on Cemetery Lane

this movie was oddly paced. slow and almost dreamy in some places and startly choppy in others, for effect. it was sort of predictable actually, but i enjoyed it just the same. spooky enough to be interesting, twisty enough to be cool. not up to stephen king standards, but not bad.

i've heard it's more or less porn with a sado masochistic twist. mysogyny in action, yet women are supposed to be looooooving it. yet another pop lit effort that sets women back fifty years. was it even erotic?

Just watched Citizen Four.

Gives great insight in how scared any civilian in Western countries should be of their government.

Excellent sci-fi/horror/comedy, set and filmed in Ireland - 8/10.

Leviathan (2014) - In a Russian coastal town, Kolya is forced to recruit a lawyer friend to help fight the corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished.

Well-done David vs. Goliath story. Hard-working Kolya has a young son and beautiful wife and his old army buddy lawyer has evidence of the mayor's corruption that can make him back off from taking over Kolya's property. What could go wrong? star star star star 1/2

The Theory Of Everything The movie itself 4/5, Eddie Redmayne's performance 5/5.

Don't you find that in all biopics of people who are still living, the ending is always sort of anti-climatic? It's kind of like "...and he's still working on it." The End.

AH's The Birds. 4 stars out of 5. After watching the film, I read the alternate ending to the film. I really wished they did the alternate ending. It was much more terrifying.

"Strange Cargo" (1940).

Not your typical Joan Crawford film. Infact, come the second half, it's not typical of many hollywood films LOL, particually for 1940. The message is at times, very heavy handed, but it's an interesting film and the chemistry between the leads is so lost on hollywood these days unfortunately. Most major stars of today (are there any?), all look too clean cut, handsome and dull. Bring back the star era I say. It has its negatives, but so few stars today, if any, have any of the charisma of a Gable or Crawford.

Rant over LOL. Film looked lovely in it's glistening black and white, and was well directed and edited and even funny at times despite it's religous overtones. As an adult who grew up on these films, I can see why my parents still love them so much. New films, which i see with my mates, are alot less enjoyable then a film like "Strange Cargo". There were alot of shitty films back in the day too, but few young adults or teenagers will give these old films a chance unfortunately. Sure the pacing of these old films is often alot slower and the speech pattern can be offputting I guess, but there's a wealth of good old shit out there.

Not even you guys on the org see the oldies much it seems. sad

Primer.

Great film 3.5/5. I would score it more but for the fact I wasnt sure what the fuck was going on in the 2nd half. Definately need to watch it again more closely.

Apparently filmed on a $7000 budget which makes it an extraordinary achievement.
