Mission to Mars

These people are just crazy.

"The Dutch-based Mars One foundation, which plans to send four people to Mars, announced it has narrowed down a pool of more than 200,000 applicants to just 100 candidates. The shortlist includes candidates from 35 countries."


200,000 applicants? Wow. Wouldn't have thought a one-way ticket would generate that much interest.


"The soon to be astronauts will go to Mars in 2025 to establish a settlement. If all goes well, Mars One will keep sending groups of four people every two years to grow the colony and sustain life. The trip to Mars would be anywhere between 34,8 milliom milles and 250 million miles, all depending on how distant apart the planets are. It would take the astronauts about 39 days (closest approach) to 289 days (farthest approach)."



Talk about running away from home. This is a whole new level. But somebody's got to be the first.

Love this interview. It answers a lot of serious questions regarding this project. I'd completely forgotten about this Mars One project, because I didn't take it seriously. But since one of the 100 finalist in round 2 is from my city its been on the news in fairly heavy rotation. Now I'm curious how this is going to turn out even if it doesn't get off the ground, the selection process is enough to hold attention.

I've been to clubs when they're about to close and there are only a handful of people left inside. I'd imagine it would be a similar scenario, but just, you know, in space.

Looks like Mars One isn't the one with plans.
SpaceX's Elon Musk to Reveal Mars Colonization Ideas This Year

In an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit Monday evening (Jan. 5), Musk told readers that the details of his Mars Colonial Transporter would be unveiled by the end of the year, and that the plan would be different from

the Dragon capsules and Falcon 9 rockets SpaceX is flying today.

"The Mars transport system will be a completely new architecture," Musk wrote in the Reddit AMA. "Am hoping to present that towards the end of this year. Good thing we didn't do it sooner, as we have learned a huge amount from Falcon and Dragon."

I didn't realize there'd be a "void" where they will not see Earth nor will they see Mars there will just be Space. Talk about panic attack.

Just read the "Feasible Analysis of a Manned Mars Free-Return Mission in 2018" from the "Inspiration Mars" group, some thought provoking stuff. The Concluding Remarks.

XIV. CONCLUDING REMARKS
A manned Mars free-return mission is a useful precursor
mission to other planned Mars missions. It will develop and
demonstrate many critical technologies and capabilities needed
for manned Mars orbit and landing missions. The technology
and other capabilities needed for this mission are needed for
any future manned Mars missions. Investments in pursuing
this development now would not be wasted even if this mission
were to miss its launch date. Although the next opportunity
after this mission wouldn’t be for about another 13 years, any
subsequent manned Mars mission would benefit from the
ECLSS, TPS, and other preparation done for this mission, In
fact, often by developing technology early lessons are learned
that can reduce overall program costs. Working on this
mission will also be a means to train the skilled workforce
needed for the future manned Mars missions.
In January, 2018, there is a rare opportunity for a fast free-
return flyby of Mars with total mission duration of 501 days.
The trajectory will only need small correction maneuvers after
trans-Mars injection. Based on open-source information
SpaceX is expected to have the Falcon Heavy ready in time,
and it seems capable of launching the needed mass. The reentry
conditions at Earth are challenging but there are no known
reasons they cannot be met with several options that we have
described. A capsule the size of the SpaceX Dragon has the appropriate volume for a two person crew. This investigation
has shown that the ECLSS technology can be developed and
tested in time for this mission.
The purpose of this investigation was to understand the
technical feasibility of this mission. The programmatics of this
mission still need to be investigated, and the authors are
working on this now.
The analysis presented here points the way toward an
ambitious but high pay-off journey to Mars to show the world
that the human race has the vision and the means to become a
multi-planet species. Not unlike the flights across the Atlantic
in the 1920s, the pilots will be challenged by unforeseen
circumstances and the uncertainties of equipment,
environment, and endurance.
As we have seen, a motivated space organization was able
to accomplish a very complex Apollo 11 mission which
included multiple rendezvous, multiple maneuvers, a landing,
and a launch from the Moon. In our opinion this Mars free
return mission is a simpler mission that can be achieved in a
similar time frame, especially considering the modern testing
capabilities as well as the advanced modeling and simulation
technology available today.
Sending humans on an expedition to Mars will be a
defining event for humanity as well as an inspiration to our
youth. Social media provides an opportunity for people to
meaningfully participate in the mission, likely making this the
most engaging human endeavor in modern history. The
mission will address one of the most fundamental technical
challenges facing human exploration of space, keeping the
humans alive and productive in deep space.
We are confident that this mission is feasible, and this
investigation did not reveal any showstoppers. We believe that
the cost would be significantly less than previous estimates for
manned Mars missions, and could be financed privately
without relying on government funding. We also believe that
with current and near-term technology it is possible to be ready
for a Mars flyby launch in January, 2018 and that we should
not pass on this mission since the next opportunity does not
occur again until 2031.


Dragon is a partially reusable spacecraft developed by SpaceX, an American private space transportation company based in Hawthorne, California. Dragon is launched into space by the SpaceX Falcon 9 two-stage-to-orbit launch vehicle, and SpaceX is developing a crewed version called the Dragon V2.

Falcon Heavy (FH), previously known as the Falcon 9 Heavy, is a spaceflight launch system being designed and manufactured by SpaceX. The Falcon Heavy is a variant of the Falcon 9 v1.1 launch vehicle and will consist of a standard Falcon 9 rocket core, with two additional strap-on boosters derived from the Falcon 9 first stage.[6] This will increase the low Earth orbit (LEO) payload to about 53 tonnes, compared to about 13 tonnes for a Falcon 9. The first launch is expected in 2015.[7]

knowing that there are millions of other galaxies out there and tons of super-earths out there...travelling to Mars is kind of meh...it's just a big wasted red rock...

of course I know that going to Mars is ALL we can afford in 2015-30...

looking forward to 3115...oh wait...

How are these people going to have enough water to survive. You can only take so much water with you on a spaceship I guess. What in the world are they going to do about showering? This project just doesn't seem realistic at all.

biggrin yeah I know but even in fantasyland traveling through galaxies was even too big of a stretch. Star Trek was only in a part of our own galaxy. Star Wars was only in part of a galaxy far, far away. Stargate did venture to another galaxy but it was just 1 (2 counting the movies) and there were a ton of serious limits. The universe is a humongous place. So Mars is really an amazing feat. Its sad there that time we did almost nothing after going to the Moon, slowed technological advances way down and we're paying for it majorly IMHO.

Inspiration Mars, are talking water reclamation, yeah recycling pee (Waterwotld), even using technology of capturing condensation that forms in the capsule. No showers for the 2 people, just sponge baths. Comfort will be almost nil for 500 days. :shiver: They still need to carry lots of water to generate breathable air while in the capsule.


Mars One, I haven't read much on the trip to Mars, but since they're using the same Space X vehicles as the Inspiration Mars mission they'll probably do the same things, but they plan on sending rovers first to setup habitats on Mars that will use the planet's buried ice for water, still there'd be a lot of water reclamation since they won't be at the poles.

H2O = water can be created using elements such as hydrogen and oxygen, perhaps obtained from asteroid mining and mineral deconstruction/recombination

Well the governments in these cases will not be footing the bill, meaning, no unwilling tax payer dollars. This is private money, can't tell people what they can do with their money. It would be nice in some cases but it doesn't work like that. Besides the things that will be learned for these experiments will impact everyone.

Why This Entrepreneur Dreams of Living on Mars

When most of us wake up in the morning, we drink some coffee, maybe exercise for a bit and then get started dominating our industry for the day. Entrepreneur Jaymee Del Rosario does all these same things, except add one thing to the list: She dreams of moving to Mars.

Turns out, her science-fiction dreams are set in reality. First, a little background. Del Rosario -- who lives in Long Beach, Calif. -- founded International Metal Source in 2009. The company distributes raw material metals and composites to the aerospace, space, defense and commercial industries around the world.

More recently, the 26-year-old applied to a Dutch non-profit initiative called Mars One, which has ambitious plans to colonize Mars. Yes, the group plans on giving people one-way tickets to live full time on the Red Planet.

Entrepreneur: Why the heck would you want to go to Mars?
Del Rosario: I have three reasons.

To preserve humanity by space exploration of another planet, which one day may be our last resort because of the damage we are doing to Earth.
We owe this space exploration to other species. Since we have the awareness, capability, knowledge and more, we owe this to more than just the survival of humanity.
Why not?
How have your friends, family and even your colleagues reacted to your being selected to be among the Mars 100?
They know me to be very bold, extraordinary and a risk taker. Therefore, to my business partner, employees, family and friends, this is normal to them. No matter what, I know that they will love and support me.

When you imagine life on Mars, what do you see?
I see endless possibilities. I see myself exploring a new world and widening my knowledge and capabilities, creating a foundation for all humanity and the generations to come.

To be specific, I know there will be a lot of researching, learning and bonding with teams during our experiences on Mars. It will be about survival.

How would you say your life here on Earth as an entrepreneur has prepared you to go to Mars?
I am a leader who is not afraid to explore different ways of thinking. In my work, I analyze and specialize in raw material metals that I provide for my clients, which is beneficial to their research and development. This is knowledge that I will carry on. When working with teams and troubleshooting problems, I can rise to the challenge and provide a significant role in this mission to Mars.
