Good look out, will do! On a side note, if you are making a PPT or presentation, save, save and save as you go along!! Nothing worse than being 10 slides in and it crashes!! The only LOVE there is, IS the LOVE WE MAKE ~ Prince |

The biggest challenge for me is Native instrument products.
It's all 800 plus GB's of data that has 2 be authorized. U really can't just "back it up".

that's a sinking feeling when hdd goes South.. reinstalling software is a pain in the ass anyways.
another piece of advice, burn, dowload to a USB drive, or purchase (from eBay) Linux Distro ... Ubuntu, Mint, or Puppy. You can run a Linux CD or USb drive "live" to recover your data on a dying or died hdd...more often than not.
I'd double up, a back hdd plus cloud storage... |

I've gone thru this once 2 many times. .
After this last download/install process, I'm sticking to my hardware instruments only and leaving the NI/software stuff alone. It is 2 much of a pain in the backside. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent. |

only software instruments i use are drum sample libraries (bfd3... ssd4) which i play/trigger on an electronic drum kit
you know you can record your hardware keyboards to midi yeah?.... that way you can still manipulate the sound (via the keyboard) if you're not completely happy with how they're sitting in a mix

cool
you'd be surprised how many people i've come across that don't realise this... and they've made it so much easier to set up with logic X
i've actually gone the other way... i record all my keyboard parts straight to audio now... i'm trying to commit to decisions when tracking... and not quantizing anything
if you ever feel like posting some pics of your setup, i'd love to see them... i dig that sort of thing a lot

I know a lot of folks that record the KB straight to audio. That seems so limiting for some reason. Suppose u want 2 edit the part? Suppose u want 2 change the sound? FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent. |

most of my keyboard parts are either piano, electric piano (rhodes, whurly), or organ... i use my nord stuff for all that
i kind of look at it as if i was recrording the actual intruments ( i wish)... i find something freeing about actually commiting to a sound while tracking... and if i need to edit a part, i'll just play it again
in this day of being able to 'fix' everything later...unlimited tracks etc... i find benefit in setting some restrictions
i hear you though... it's just the way i'm working right now... i may go back to hooking my keyboards up via midi at some point

I dig that......I just tend to change sounds a lot until I find the one I want 2 go with.
I really don't commit 2 audio on solo's........no 2 are ever the same so playing it over wouldn't work. [Edited 1/29/15 13:08pm] FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent. |

I really don't comment 2 audio on solo's........no 2 are ever the same so playing it over wouldn't work.
with the sounds i'm using, i find i can make enough adjustments just using eq, distortion, delay etc
as for editing, yeah solos are are whole different bag... most of my music is guitar based, so i'd say 90% of any solos would be guitar solos... and if i did an organ solo for example, as long as i can nail the emotion if i have to redo it, i'm good
again though, i get what you're saying, and agree with you... particularly if you're making music based around keyboards
i can be fickle too... i'll probably hook my keyboards up to midi soon and say "wtf was i thinking"

Thanks for the reminder.
I should do that indeed.
On the other hand, I can just ask the secret service for the back up. 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%. |

I'm experimenting with small computer called a Raspberry Pi and an external self-powered 2TB hdd. I had a NAS server for years but the cost of run that thing was getting higher and higher. The RP should cost me about $5.00 in electricity besides Linux is more stable. I'll have a video up sometime this spring on the 'Tube' to show everyone how to set one up, learningrcurve is low.
