I might be losing my dad

Please give me advice. A few weeks ago my dad's Dr changed his medication and gave him stronger stuff.he was on 12 different medications and was in charge of taking medicine the right way.last Thursday night,at 3 am in the morning he walked out of the house and started walking in my aunts yard and then in the road.if I hadn't followed him who knows where he would've went.I got him back into the house and the whole time he was slurring his words and not making sense. I put him to bed and a hour later I heard him walking around in the house. I went to see him and he had on his wife's high heels,he was walking back and forth throughout the house,he threw his bed sheets and clothes outside
And then he sat on the couch and had conversations with himself the next day he was fine and I asked him if he remembered anything about the night before and he said know.I recorded my dad acting the way he was and I showed it to him,he couldn't believe it.he told me the Dr gave him abilify and he has to get use to it.the next night he does the exact same stuff.then the day afterwards he was still acting crazy.he stayed that way for Two days straight.the Dr told me to call the hospital

So I called 911 and ambulance came and got him.I told the paramedics everything that was wrong with my dad. That he's over medicated, having conversations with himself, seeing people that aren't there.he told me he saw baby's in the house and claimed there were two people hiding in the house.he asked me when fany and poppy were coming home.fany is his ex wife that died 2 years ago and poppy is his father that died 12 years ago.also my dad has been peeing on the floor. They took my dad and put him on the 2nd floor.he's been there for 2 days.the Dr said the problem was that his lithium was too high.I went to visit him today. He knew who I was but still thinks his dad's suppose to come see him.the doctor told me that if my dad isn't better by another day or two then they would put him on the 3rd floor.tonight my aunt told me that my dad could be the way he is PERMANENTLY. I can't imagine that.my aunt told me he might've caused too much damage to his brain by taking too much pills to where they can't fix his brain.then she told me my dad might not never be coming home cuz she says I won't be able to take care of him.I would give up all my time to take care of my dad.he's more than a dad,he's my best friend.he's one person that I've seen and talked too and told him I loved him everyday for the past 25 years.I've cried for the first time tonight and I cannot remember the last time I cried. All this happening at Christmas Time too...all I ask of you all is to please help me stay positive and pray my dad gets better

I'm so sorry to hear of what you and your dad are going through. I wish I knew what to say but I don't. I just wanna give you a hug though. It must be very hard for you to see him so helpless and for you to be so helpless at a time like this. I hope he recovers, if possible.

Seeing a parent in such a state is tough. Who are the people in your life that might offer support?

More or less the same thing happened to my father. He also had hallucinations and had to go to a nursing home (or whatever the word is in English) A few years later you couldn't communicate with him at all. When he died, my mother and I felt like, it's better this way.
There's not really much you can do! It's a fact of life that this happens to people as they get older. Medicine doesn't help. As hard as it is, I'm afraid you're not going to get your father as best friend back. Sorry if I'm a bit hard on you. But you will always have great memories.

i'll keep you and your dad in my pray i think you need a second opinion with respect to your dad's medications, and how they are interacting. without wanting to scare you, pharmaceutical companies have little regulation or oversight regarding the manufacture and distribution of brain-bending drugs, and doctors currently use patients as guinea pigs.

If you don't mind my asking, how old is your Dad?

Okay, that's different. My dad died at 75 so I thought with yours it was an age thing like with mine. Yes, this makes a difference, I see this must be difficult when someone is in what should be the prime of their life. Now I also understand the part where you said he was in charge of his own medication, which confused me a bit. 12 different kinds of 'em, no one can handle that and come out unscarred. I hope he can still be "saved".

I'm not a doctor and I'm not giving medical advice but I would find a new doctor and take him there. 12 medications at 45 years old in crazy to me, unless it's cancer or MS or something extremely serious, it just seems excessive.

I agree with those who say you should get a second opinion asap. I don't know his diagnosis but it sounds like the amount of meds may be excessive....that needs to be evaluated.

I will keep your family in my prayers..... hug

Well I went to visit my dad today. He's doing A LOT better.I stayed with him about a hour and a half and he only said one crazy thing. The Dr wasn't there today so the nurse told me I could d leave a note and she would give it to him.it said" please take my dad off all medicines except for the blood pressure medicine and please Lower the milligrams in his lithium medicine.before I left they moved my dad to the 3rd floor.I don't think he belongs there.he's improved a lot but my aunt told me it's not a bad thing.she said that they will get him better help on the 3rd floor.I hope she's right.I'm staying positive and thank u much guy's and girls for praying. It means a lot. My grandma told me her and a friend had a prayer meeting right in the middle of the piggly wiggly store today.she said people probably thought they were crazy but it doesn't matter to her she said.so hopefully my dad will be home soon.

Thanks for the update, believe it or not I was thinking about you and your dad. I'm happy to have some good news. biggrin

Make sure that the doctor speaks directly with you after he gets the note and write down your questions so you dont forget them. Make sure that you understand what each medication's effects are.

Best wishes

Well I called the 3rd floor today to speak to my dad but the nurse said I needed a" special code" .I told her I was his son but that didn't make a difference. A few hours later my dad calls me.I talk to him for 30 minutes and he didn't say anything weird or crazy. He was back to his regular self. Thank the Lord! And for those who prayed. Tomorrow is Christmas and even though my dad won't be home,I'll know he's alright and he's getting better.also,I'm gonna go visit him tomorrow. Thanks again y'all and hope you all have a great Christmas!
