Really? Penalizing stores for NOT being opened before Black Friday.

Buffalo-Area Mall Threatens To Fine Stores That Don't Open On Thanksgiving
An upstate New York shopping mall is threatening to fine retailers about $200 an hour if they fail to open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Walden Galleria, a suburban Buffalo retail complex with more than 200 stores, told store managers in a meeting last week that they must open their doors when the shopping center opens on the holiday, or pay penalties specified in leases, 10 managers told The Huffington Post on Tuesday. Waiting until midnight to open may cost stores $1,200 or more.

Struggling to compete with big-box stores and online retailers, shopping malls around the country plan to kick off Black Friday early by opening on Thanksgiving. The malls are trying to keep up with stores like Kmart, Target and Walmart, which have all pushed holiday shopping's start date to turkey day.

Well, it is what its all about.

Ah the Walden Gonorrhea. lol Horrible place, I'd never suggest anyone go there.

But this isn't surprising at all. I'm kind of surprised that this hasn't happened before.

I think the whole "shop now" and "let's be open on Thanksgiving" thing has gotten way out of hand. From a Christian standpoint, the whole objective of the holiday season should be about giving - not shopping. Already the day after Halloween means the stores will have their Christmas crap up. Why the "rush" of shopping? If stores would offer their discounts throughout the year and have real sales more often, there wouldn't be a need to have a Black Friday or a need to move it into Thanksgiving. Besides, who wants to get up early, or leave Thanksgiving meals, to go shopping with hoards of people drunk and dressed in their pajamas to go run through the aisles at their local box store? No thanks!

nod And folks will definitely be up in there shopping drunk. Let's not even get started on the drama that happens in the parking lots! I used to love Black Friday, but once it started being a pain to find parking, finding merchandise all over the place in stores...clothes thrown everywhere and put in the wrong spots and then waiting in check out lines for 30 minutes to an hour became the norm, I said forget this and opted to sleep in instead.

As for the topic, it's all about that almighty dollar as always...but really, what's the worse that could happen if the stores opened at midnight? Do they really think folks are going to riot because Yankee Candle and Calendars Unlimited chose to open at midnight instead of 6pm? disbelief

Wait!

How do you vote for stores to be opened at unusual times in an election? I know that corp amer has politicians in pocket, but what's that got to do with the holidays?

Personally, I see it as the ever shifting if power, it not there yet but its well on its way

When I was a kid, there was NOTHING open on Thanksgiving. Which meant we sat around bored after dinner and watched tv or whatever. But maybe that was a better way to do it. I don't get the black friday thing. If I'm gonna shop, I'll do it online. I don't want to have some annoying mother who claims to love her kids trying to get into a fistfight with me in isle 4 over some stupid toy. lol

There's nothing Christian about christmas in America these days.

Well damned if you do, damned if you don't. What's the point?

I understand, the percentages are high of people who refuse to go shopping this Thanksgiving, but I sure there will be enough percentage to make it worth the stores while.

It wasn't that long ago. You forgot to buy anything Wednesday evening, you did without until Friday. Store parking lots had tumbleweeds rolling through them.

the bigger the city, the longer ago it was...

i was a kid in the small town of buffalo when it was like that.

you better not have forgot somethin you needed on thurs.

BUT!!! this is what i mean when i say that people voted for this shit.

how many times, as a kid, do i remember people talkin 'bout

"they need to at least have one store open" then it became "one closer"

this is a capitalistic society that has no regard for other folks families.

"so what if somebody had to work as long as we get what we want when we want it"

right now we talkin bout holiday shit and folks can't connect the dots

about HOW it came to this.

YOU ASKED FOR IT YOU GOT IT (toyota) lol

Internet commerce has flipped the switch on how retail has to do does business. Does Amazon or eBay take a day off for anything? Nope. If Internet retail is able to get a significance percentage of the total budget of shoppers; somebodies going to be left out in the cold and possibly out of business. Vacant stores in Malls, equal net lose. How many times have you seen stores close-up after Christmas Holiday season?

My question is, Are these workers being compensated? Some are but I suspect many are not. Some people have always worked on holidays but you got paid...double or time & a-half. In one respect this is a buggy vs the car... one is going to take over the other. You wanna get stuck on how things use to be and get mowed under.

The other factor is what KingBad has been saying..

We've elected people to office who have for the last 40 years, have eroded workers right, collective bargining, and the right to organize. Then folks wanna raise hell when companies deprived them of family time and whatnots. If you mention a Union, people talk about they're no good blah, blah, blah. As if the 8hr work day, health insurance, overtime, workers comp, etc, etc, were given for the asking. confused

I wonder if all workers (net/retail) were paid double for working on Holidays, how many of these stores would open?

Your money is the casting vote on whether stores are open on Thanksgiving. Just don't shop on Thanksgiving and encourage all your friends and family not to as well. That will stop "black" thursday.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

OK, I saw that Kmart has been open for Thanksgiving for decades, I never knew, we stayed home and watched TV, videos, talked to (yelled at) each other, something. But that all good and fine for some to choose, free country, enterprising and all, but to think that some store owner gets penalized for standing by a tradition seems to be pushing capitalism to the next level. And I am surprised about time and a half, I always understood holiday pay was double time. Glad I avoided retail.
