Feeling Down As Shit

I hate making really serious threads. And i know some might laugh at this. But I'm actually going crazy here at my apartment. I'm a lifter, football player, and runner. Being active is a huge huge huge part of my life. I recently got what was known as ''Runners Knee'' shirt hurts like an absolute motherfucker. Feels like someones stabbing my knee and everything below it.

I'm wearing a knee brace right now. And haven't been able to workout in a few days. On top of that i had filling put in a tooth this summer. And the filling has started to fall out. And my gums are bleeding everyday. Now i'll either have to get the filling done again. THEN a root canal on top of that. Or just have the tooth yanked out completely. Both will cost quite a bit of dough.

On top of that if the this runner knee gets worse. I'll have to see someone about it. And lord knows how much that will cost. I'm just going crazy here with all the possibilities.

Has anyone had runners knee before?

It's not sciatica, is it? Nerve damage and pain from a bulging disc? I've had 3 instances of that this year, and it hurts like a motherf***er. But I have a good chiropractor and he fixed me each time (as the video you saw will attest to!). The first time was the most expensive because we had to X-ray me, but that still came in at less than $1,000. Probably closer to $700 or so.

But I've never had the actual thing called "runner's knee".

I'm pretty sure it's Runners Knee. These are the symptoms

Pain behind or around the kneecap, especially where the thighbone and the kneecap meet.
Pain when you bend the knee -- when walking, squatting, kneeling, running, or even sitting.
Pain that's worse when walking downstairs or downhill.
Swelling.
Popping or grinding sensations in the knee.

That explains what i feel at the moment. I actually had this happen in the summer. But it went away within a few days. This time it's stayed for a few weeks. And now i got the brace on. Also been putting bengay on it as well.

I've been curious if a chiropractor would help. I'm hoping i don't need an MRI or something. That shit costs soooo much money lol

What you described doesn't sound like the type sciatica I had, but it could still be tied to nerve damage. Kind of sounds like an injury, though. Don't you squat with heavy weights?

If so, maybe an orthopedic doc is the best place to start, but I know it won't be cheap. sad

Maybe it's time for pampering and taking care of yourself instead of doing things that can aggrivate the injury. For example, how about soaking in a hot tub or mineral pool? You might try some heating pads to soothe the sore muscles. If you use a tiger balm or woodlock oil from the Chinese market, it has a better scent than, say, Ben Gay rub and the heat & liniment can do wonders. If you don't have access to spa-like treatments, you could just soak in a bathtub - or at least body parts below the knee. Treat yourself - you might try some bubble bath, mustard bath (that's at health markets), or some simple scents like lavender or sandalwood. You should also get a massage. It's one thing to rub your own knees and legs, but you can really relax when you have a professional doing it. You'd be surprised how much your body parts are connected. For example, relaxing your shoulders can help relax your back, which can help relax your legs. Or maybe you just need some hunky men to come over and rastle naked with you! Either way, just relax and listen to your body telling you, "Hey bud, slow the f-down!"

lol

Dang, I'm sitting here pondering whether or not to take a percocet because I don't like to take them unless the pain is significant, on the other hand, I don't want this knee to wake me up in the middle of the night. sad So, you see, we have the same ailment right now.

Mine isn't from running though. It's an old injury flaring up from the time I fractured my knee at the SB with Princey....true story. Took a bad fall in the staging area.

And I need to be very careful because the following year I injured my back when an old man, presumably a McCain supporter tried to run us over at an Obama event for being "communists"...I kid you not.

I just joined a new rec center after being mostly inactive for a long time due to my injuries. I've gained a lot of weight and I should not have tried to be a hero, but I am desperate to get rid of the pounds.

Thankfully, my sciatica is not acting up right now. After the Obama injury I developed spinal stenosis and sometimes it causes the sciatica to flare up. From your description I don't think you have it because there is a characteristic sharp, shooting pain all the way up the back of the entire leg, not the front or just the knee.

Back to the knee. Do not wrap the knee and use the BenGay at the same time. Be very careful with it because BenGay used over a large area or too frequently can send you to the ER even kill you. Do not sleep with the knee brace if you can help it so the area can have better circulation. Avoid putting weight on it for now and keep it elevated as much as possible.

Right now I'm using Tiger Balm and heat.

You need health insurance... sad

Sorry if I sound like a mom....dunno why I keep doing that to you, comfort

Isnt "runners knee" essentially abuse of the knee through improper development of the support muscles/tissue connected to the knee?

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

^ it has a lot of causes. overuse is one of them, injury is another, repetitive stress syndrome comes into it for some folks. my doctor tells me i have runners knee too, in the beginning stages. just enough to keep me off the stairmaster forever neutral it's painful and there's not much one can do about it. fixes can include injections into the affected area, surgery for bad cases. i feel okay when i don't use my knees much, so i'm really sorry for Gunshalen who is in agony. hope you get better soon. the only cure i know personally right is 'don't use the knee'

Guns if there is any way you can get in to see an orthopedist I think it would be worth it.

It's Obamacare open enrollment right now. And if you make less than a certain amount per year you qualify for MediCal which is full coverage & no cost. This is actually not a bad state to be a Medicaid patient from what I understand.

It sounds like the inability to exercise is causing you some stress and I believe it. I was laid up with a broken ankle for months, couldn't exercise or even get around without pain. It does a number on your mental state, if you are used to being active and suddenly have to rest, even depend on others to help. I got kinda depressed sitting on the couch for 2 months.

There is not much you can do besides grin and bear it, try to remember you are in a temporary situation that is doing a number on your emotions, and it will eventually be over because you are doing the right thing to heal it. I just tried to turn my flame down as low as it would go for those months, and come out the other side.

I don't think ive ever had runners knee but i have a crapload of other nerve, knee and joint problems. I have nerve problems from being a diabetic and i jacked up my left shoulder from years(off and on) of lifting weights. Also my knees swell(hereditary) and my neck and back are jacked up from a car accident.

Anyway i say that stuff to say, DO NOT hesitated to go to a doctor, chiropractor, or whomever, 2 get treatment for your issues. I totally understand your concerns about the costs of treatment but joint, foot, knee, neck, nerve damage/pain is serious business and nothing 2 mess with. Without treatment the problems usually gets worse and harder 2 treat(and more costly). Even without working out, you're a big/tall guy,and that alone (over time) will do a job on your joints, muscles, etc.

I wish (when i was your age) i would have taken care of some of the problems that continue 2 bother me. It could have saved me years of pain.

Good luck.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I'm sorry for you, Gunshalen.

I hope you can find some excersises that don't hurt your knees.

Maybe yoga is something to focus on know? It's not your kind of sports, but it might give you excersise your body needs, without hurting it.

Dealing with pain is a challenge. Finding that balance between not overstreching and not standing still is hard. Wish you the best.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

runners knee is an overuse injury exacerbated by tight and weak hamstrings and unbalanced strength in your quads.

- stretch your quads

- strengthen your hamstrings

- get a few pairs of sneakers and only wear them when you train and rotate them

and when i say stretch your quads - you need to hold a quad stretch for at least a minute, and you need to do it every day.

stick to low impact cardio like cycling so you dont go nuts from no activity ....if your not very flexible yoga isnt a good idea because a mistake in your alignment could make your injury worse. wait until you're healed if you want to attempt some yoga unless you really know and understand how to align yourself while in a posture.

ice, ice ice....and inserts for your shoes will help while you're on the mend.

Yes, TMB is a terrible ailment affecting so many of today's youth. There doesn't appear to be a cure either and many people eventually do lose their extremities. Gunsnhalen really should seek professional care or at least give bonking a rest for 1-2 weeks.
