camping... dig it?... hate it?

i haven't been in a long time... now my boys are a little older (2 and 4) i plan on taking them in a few weeks... just ordered a new tent and all the gear... can't wait... they'll love it

i've picked a nice spot next to a big lake for our first adventure... i'll be setting up the tent here in the back yard for a night first

anyone here like getting out into nature?

I like it! But I never got to do it as much as I wanted.

My idea of camping is staying in a hotel that doesn't have room service.

I began camping only like 3 or 4 years ago.

We usually go to this one place out in the Hamptons (beautiful beach) that has running water at each campsite and a toilet/shower facility.

Last year was hectic so we didn't go, but I'm thinking that when the weather gets warm again I'm going to go upstate or someplace with either a lake or a river.

I was in the Amazon jungle in June and that's about as far back to nature as it gets. The tent was a piece of plastic over a wooden frame. The bed was a sleeping bag on the ground. Food was fish that the guide catched from the river. (Talk about fresh!) Transport was a canoe. Company was lots of insects. It was amazing, but after a week the total lack of comfort and the mosquito bites got to me. Still, seeing and feeling and actually being in the Amazon jungle... Wow.

My idea of luxury is staying in a hotel room that has hot showers. There are no hot showers in Iquitos, Peru, but in that climate, you don't mind.

Somebody went real camp. The insects would have done me in.

It's my favorite thing to do and I plan to do more and more of it. Makes me happy like nothing else. I took two camping trips last summer: Utah's Capitol Reef National Park, Humboldt State Park Redwoods.

I love camping...I mean real camping. We go up into the woods near Mount Rainier in WA near Carbonado. Off the grid. no fees. We camp by the river and build a fire. No bathroom, only a few other campers. No lights. It's so pitch black at night you can stand on the bridge and see the Milky Way. It's so serene and quiet. Sometimes I go alone. I love getting away from civilization...no TV, no phone, no noise. Heaven.

As a little girl I went camping with my dad. When I was newly married, I went camping with my husband several times. Now? No. One time he mentioned possbiley getting a RV... as house on wheels. I said, Unless we are bring along maid services who's going to do the cleaning and cooking?

The first, last and only time I ever went camping (when I was 13), I was with my family and we went to a piece of lakefront property my dad had just bought in northern Wisconsin (with the idea that he was going to build a cabin). Six of us in a pop-up camper, no facilities - and it rained.

Then...because God wasn't done punishing me, I got my period while we were up there. And...several days after we got home, when I was trying desperately to forget the ordeal...I found an engorged tick on my head.

So, yeah - no camping ever.

That sounds lovely and that's how I like to do it too.

I love when I hear stories of other women going camping alone. I have made a habit of it and I get the strangest reactions from everybody. "Uh... is that safe?" "Aren't you worried about going alone?" etc etc etc

Apparently, a woman sleeping solo under the stars is a radical act.

I love going alone. But I get the same questions. smile Probably safer than walking down the street alone at night. And I did that all the time in Chicago. lol

I love nature (mostly) but hate camping. I need a bed and a bathroom.

I love hiking and animals and plants and scenery and all that kinda thing, but a proper cup of coffee or tea in the morning is important too.

Maybe you can't get a fancy Starbucks cup of coffee but I enjoy a good strong cup of coffee in the outdoors.

I went camping 4 times this year with my family. We went to Tahoe, to one of the Thousand Trails parks just outside of Marysville, California, up the coast near Gualala, CA and down in La Jolla (a KOA site so not camping in its purest form). We had a great time this year. I don't like insects but I don't let that ruin my fun. Clear skies, grilled meats and s'mores are enough to get me out there every time.

Nothing like a road trip out into the wilderness, it's exciting, but sleeping in it, that's a whole other concept.

nod I love building the campfire and making s'mores. We made strong coffee in a pot too. You take coffee filters, fill them and wrap them with string and place them in the pot of water. Sooooo good!! razz We took the oven racks out of our oven and laid them across the circle of rocks we built for the fire pit. Where we camp they let you take your own ax and chop firewood from the fallen trees.

I never went camping with my family so camping will always mean being hearded around with other girls my age; I hated it.

Haven't you people ever watched a horror movie? Think about it!! How many horror films are set in the woods?

Evil Dead series

Friday the 13th series

The Burning

Cabin in the Woods

Sleepaway Camp series

Spirit Camp

Hatchet series

The conclusion is incontrovertible! Camping leads to death!
