When men refer to women as "sister" I need to get to the bottom of this. Why do some men refer to women as "sis" or "sister"? I have a couple of men friends who do this constantly and I find it irritates me every time I hear it. They are both art boys. Is it an art boy thing? And why do they use it and what does it imply about the relationship?

I was called 'sister' all day today. But that's because they are my 'brothers'. As a sign of respect.

I would never drop "bro" or "brother". Seems totally awkward to me. And isn't it presumptuous? Now I'm getting mad.

Or are they trying to 'remind' me of the nature of the relationship ? Because if that's the case, that's some arrogance right there... (Not that you probably know the answer to that...)

Love for one another. We're all family, right?

Ugh. I actually find it charming when men or women call me "dude". But the sister thing never sits well with me. Maybe because I never had a sibling? One guy flips between sister, sis, babe, babydoll, darling, sweetheart, jellybean. Very confusing.

When men I know call me sister, I take it as a sign of love and respect. Like they would treat me like a sister- not as a piece of ass.
They care about my personality and regard me as one of their own... I find it to be a very good thing when a man who isn't related to you calls you "sister".
Because those mofos know they would never get this ass, nor do they try, we are genuine friends, and that is RARE, they have no underlying intention for being nice to me, and they have my respect for that. They understand me, and they treat me they way I like to be treated, as an equal. I return the favor and call them "brothers" and treat them that way.

Thanks. Very interesting. I have to admit these friendships are very old and very dear, so it's not a bad thing. I guess I'm in a rut.

It's a term of endearment for my closest female friends. They're like family to me.

I will occasionally call others "sister" or "brother" as a term of endearment extended on the basis of ostensible kinship. Perhaps a person may share an ideology, common history, ancestry, or place of origin with me. Perhaps I've noticed we're simply both humans trying to navigate life while doing well by others. It's just nice to celebrate common ground sometimes. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

After reading all your comments, I'm realizing that it's a term of deep affection saying something like "we're on the same side" and that I'm probably shrugging it off for no good reason. It was confusing me, but I think I hear you. As we get older, the friend zone, whether that's what it is or not (in one case I am not so sure) is not such a bad place to be.

I'd respond by saying you listen to too much Prince music.
