"A Different World" reunion airs on OWN this weekend

to all my fellow 30somethings and above...We LOVED Whitley Gilbert & Dwayne Wayne!

Posted: Thursday, October 23, 2014 5:30 am

“A Different World,” the entertaining and engaging ‘90s sitcom originally conceived as a star vehicle for “The Cosby Show’s” Lisa Bonet and her character, Denise Huxtable, ultimately became less about Lisa and more about the superb actors, delightful characters and life lessons to be learned at a historically Black college or university. Now, more than 20 years later, the cast is reunited for a lively episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airing at 10 p.m., Sunday on OWN.

“A Different World” earned six NAACP Image Awards, a People’s Choice Award and three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and featured guest stars such as Patti LaBelle, Whoopi Goldberg, Diahann Carroll, Joe Morton, Loretta Devine and Kim Wayans. It also launched the careers of talented actors such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei.

The cast reunion includes Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson) Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa Vinson Taylor) Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks) and Sinbad (Coach Oakes), all students or faculty at the fictional Hillman College. The show’s executive producer/director, Debbie Allen, who has since gone on to direct hit shows such as “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Girlfriends,” “Grey’s Anatomy” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” was also present.

In discussing “the hit TV show that broke new ground,” Winfrey asks, “Did you all know that you all were trailblazers?” The cast reflects on how “A Different World” addressed important life issues in each episode and also shared their favorite memories of six seasons together. They also considered the impact that the show has on young viewers two decades later.

“To this day, still, I’ll be on Twitter and just say that I’m getting together with these guys and everybody goes crazy. You just get a flood of people saying, ‘I wouldn’t have gone to university if it wasn’t for your show,’” said Summer.

Guy added, “That’s the genius of Dr. Cosby. He understood the power of the medium, so he chose a setting that would influence people as well as make them laugh.”

According to theGrio.com, Allen posted a behind-the-scenes group shot of the cast on her Facebook page and wrote, “Thank you Oprah Winfrey for bringing us together! Reunited and it feels so good! #ADifferentWorld.

The episode also features updates with Brazilian transgender modeling sensation Lea T and “General Hospital’s” Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) as well as Paul Stanley of KISS, who reveals “When I met Gene, I didn’t like him. He was opinionated [and] brash.”

I was wondering when this was going to air. Since I don't have the channel anymore in my cable package, I'll probably have to watch the episode online. My favorite sitcom of all time...thumbs up!

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Really is too bad that Lisa Bonet's rift with Bill Cosby seems never to have been fully repaired. She's absent from much retrospective coverage of these shows, and it's a big loss-- I've always found her one of their most intriguing personalities.

It's really puzzling too. It seems like after all these years they could have
patched things up. It seems like their relationship was just as icy as Will Smith
and Janet Whitten-Hubert.

The riff between Hubert and Will, had more to do with ego,(mainly, Janet's) whereas, the riff between Bill and Lisa had more to do with how he saw her. Bill saw real potential in Lisa, ( as would a father would see in his own daughter) and had issues with the choices she was making at that time.

Janet was a thespian, broadway, actress whisked into her first sitcom. She took her craft VERY seriously. Will although destine for superstardom didn't @ first. They clashed. "Fresh Prince" did lose its spark & fire when she was let go. Will admitted that later. Sadly it will NEVER be another reunion without James Avery(r.i.p.).

Bill was caught between a rock and a hard place. Lisa & Bill contantly clashed. She was a teen heart throb(my crush also). Also a REBEL. Her luck ran out after being given her own spin off series. She became pregnant & wanted it written in the series. Cosby declined. She was then let go & written out of "Different World" which ultimately became better without her. Later written back into "The Cosby Show". Bill & Lisa clashed again. Which led to another exit. Plus an unpatched relationship

I wonder if Lisa is willing to sit down with an Interviewer and just talk about what happened? Probably wishful thinking cuz I don't think that's what she's about. Bill Cosby became one of The Powers that Be @ NBC...When he went to CBS they paid him $5 Million per episode. I don't know what CBS paid The Great Phylicia...

The "A different world" reunion was good. I learned things about Freddy that I never knew before..I always know her voice when she does her voice-over work. That work has paid her bills for the last 20yrs...Daryl Bell & Dawn Lewis looked like they got stuck in time..They looked the same...

IKR? I can usually pick up on her voice in cartoons and on commercials but I was floored when she said she's the voice of Green M&M. lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

And she never had a problem letting folks know. lol

I actually thought the show became more funny after her departure. I will admit

she was a better actress than Daphne Reid but Daphne made it do what it do

to make the part of Aunt Viv work.

rolleyes

She was so boring. With no fire whatsoever..Thank God! The show wasn't focused on her walk on role. Which is the reason Janet protested the role when it became time to renew her contract. Because they reduced it to a few episodes per season...She wasn't having it! So the STAR decided a replacement....

..LOL..I have to see that Green M&M commercial one more time.....And you notice Cree doesnt do a major change to her voice..She talks at a higher pitch or she gives you Sexy...She does have a "perfect" speaking voice made for voice-over work....I think Vanessa Williams is also an M&M...

I wonder why Charlene Brown (Kim) wasnt there? She started on the show before Freddy...

Yeah she was bad on the show too. Come to think about, everybody was a dime on the show. Even Kim Wayans in the first season, lol.
