Windows 8: What is the verdict?

I can't understand the basic logic behind windows 8. I much prefer 7 and XP.

Can anyone here please tell me what they like about Windows 8?

good timing . i went back and forth for a new business- i have always been told windows 7 was the way to go ... but ... i talked to the software guy i deal with ... and i kinda was told to get win8 ... i have a new laptop with win 8 on - - - and i do not like it ... so i have to sit down and figure out why i dont like it ... and figure out how to make it work "for me " ...

it seems very confusing ... i know there are online help stuff ...(or a tutorial that came with my laptop)

I don't find a single thing about it 2 be intuitive.

It really shouldn't be an operating system on computers (desktop and laptops). It was developed for tablet users. I've been learning my way around it but it's rather annoying.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

At first I hated it, but after a learning curve, I now love it. Its 7 when you want it, and great as 8 on a touch screen.

More importantly is very fast and very stable.

There are a few annoying things, (like diff apps booting depending on your mode), but it sounds like windows 10 has ironed those out.

I use Windows 8, OSX and Android and I find Win 8 by far the most intuative (once you learn it), fasted, most stable and useful.

I nearly did the same, but persevered (Which you shouldn't have to do) and once it updated to 8.1, all was good. 8 is simply a faster 7 with a choice of interfaces. If you want, you can set up 8.1 to behave in full desktop mode, so its simply an improved 7.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention but it seems like that wasn't advertised.

I don't know anyone that knows this or even likes 8.

The 8.1 update brought back a form of the start bottom, and allows you to boot in desktop mode. In other words, they wanted to win back win 7 customers, so they brought back a full desktop option. 8.1 is way faster than 7, and the sky drive integration in it is the best cloud storage solution on the market.

The inital launch of 8 was a disaster. They should have taught people the changes. I was pulling my hair out for the first few months. I had my finger on 're-install' at serveral points. Glad I didn't.

Basically, if you like 7, you can install 8 and put it in desktop mode. Or wait for 10 next year.

Same where I was too. PR disaster. Great features in the product, but nobody knew how to find them!

Looking at the video for whats coming in Win 10, they seemed to have learned their lesson. Its one platform, but changes mode automatically, depending on whether you touch a screen, mouse or phone; rather than trying to create interfaces that could do both.

It slows down productivity, but eventually users get used to it.

Honestly, Microsoft needs to slow its roll. Vista forward, they've been framing all sorts of annoying "time saving" apps, shortcuts, etc. Counting on management via group policy.

They need to go as simple and bare bones as possible, then add optional enhancement packs. There is a reason why people migrated to smartphones even though the tech was low compared to full featured pcs.

Windows Phone 8 is great. OS 8, is okay.

with the good old start menu button it would have been the best Windows since XP

I own windows 8 in one of my computers, and I use the traditional desktop option, basically (couldn't care less about that shitty new menu for tablets)

some software has problems with Win 8 tough...

Good to see I am not the only one!

Clearly it's is a post tablet/iphone inspired design (and it's a decent design for a tablet), but it's totally useless for desktops. I like to say it's a curtain on the windows, but a computer doesn't need curtains.

The dumbest change that I noticed was the extra steps involved in shutting the damn thing down! Hopefully the start button fixes this.

But once I got used to it, it's basically just 7 with some extra stuff that I never use.

Use a keyboard and see how much faster that works than clicking through a "Start Menu"...
For people who have been using mostly a mouse the last 20 years on a computer it's a big step using a keyboard it seems...
Win8 is far superior over Win7... Win10 is a step backwards to make the transistion easier for mouse users... the Metro style interface is only useful for handheld devices...
But, to each their own I guess...

THIS,

with the added handicap that some programs/games sometimes have trouble with Win 8 (mostly freezes)

Absolutely nothing. Thank Gawd when I was offered a free upgrade from Win 7 when I bought my computer I declined. whew

It's throwing paint on an old house until it:

* removes the registry

* solves .dll hell [ app isolation technology is a bandaid)

* doesn't require periodic defrags

It's not even pretty to look at for me (though this is subjective).

MS is stuck between a rock and a hard place, because doing

a few of the above will break the majority of apps that run

on Windows (a nono since it runs on business machines).

There really are a lot of things to love about Win8, but thy whole design and the decision by Microsoft to force the whole OS across all devices was frustrating to say the least. The good parts are that it's much faster than Win7 and more stable, but the Metro interface and lack of a Start menu was really grating to desktop users, especially those used to working Win7. Win8 is absolutely amazing on tablets and smartphones, and if they had left it to those devices, it could have rivaled Android. It appears Microsoft has dealt with those issues with Win8-Service pack 2 (oops, I meant Win10), but they should seriously consider separating their OS divisions for the consumer market and home/business market.

Takes some getting used to. For home, I like it, but there are some quirks I haven't figured out yet. For work, Windows 7 all the way.

Hardly matters. Windows 10 is on its way.
