Thor as a woman

I was listening to the radio this morning about women superheroes and women on the creative side of comic characters and such. Some very interesting points made. As someone who does read/purchase comics... for the art more than anything, I have notices the oversexualizing of the female hero, and have always questioned the midset behind it. Yes of course most likely she will be in shape but oversized boobs, wearing heels, poutty lips and the hair and makeup always done get's comical.

.

But I digress. Why would they need to make Thor into a woman?

Thor is a Norse god. He is male. Like Wonder Woman being a made up character drawing on Greek mythology, why not make a female superhero drawing from Norse mythology?

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. THOR will be the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for super hero comic books in America: women and girls.

She easily could be a character derived from the Valkyries

Like Wonder Woman came from the Amazons

There are so many individual characters from Norse mythology that they could have created a new female superhero from

Brunhilde, Valkyrie from Norse Mythology

Marvel already did that with Thor-Girl (Tarene).

It's like making Jove/Jupiter into a woman, when there is Juno Minerva Venus Diana etc

Marvel is confusing readers a little in how this new Thor is being promoted. Thor is not changing into a woman. Thor is still male, he is just no longer worthy of lifting his hammer which gives him his god of thunder powers. Someone else comes along who is found worthy and lifts the hammer, receives the god of thunder powers and just happens to be a woman. It's like when the alien Beta Ray Bill lifted Thor's hammer and became Beta Ray Thor for a few months back in the 80s.

Male Thor is still around with his axe Jarnbjorn instead of his hammer Mjolnir.

If there is a female Thor, shouldn't there be a Wonder Man?

Wonder Man was created in 1964 and has been an Avenger off and on for over 35 years.

How did I not answer your question? Marvel has owned the rights to the Wonder Man name since 1964 so you will never see a 'Wonder Man' version of Wonder Woman. I thought my answer was quite clear. shrug

She looks awesome, but, yeah, I think this is kind of lame. There are plenty of very powerful female Norse characters who could support their own title.

I disagree. Comic book sales today are a fraction of what they once were. Unless it's an A-list character, it's highly unlikely a series will have a substantial run. Black Widow and Elektra both currently star in their own solo titles and despite the exposure of appearing in multiple films, both titles are struggling. If those two can barely hold their own, what chance does a Sif or Valkyrie solo series have?

I suppose my interest here is a literary one. From a business standpoint, though, I've no doubt you're absolutely correct. Makes me sad, though.

Two things I wonder...

1. How well was Thor doing in sales prior to this narrative arc?

2. How well might a limited series showcasing a female Asgardian do? I wonder if the sheer novelty of such a thing might result in decent sales. (Albeit probably less immediate press interest.)

Next thing you know, we'll have Jane Bond taking over and Mr Monneypeny as her secretary. But even though I don't give a damn about superheroes (regardless of my username), this is interesting. Is this feminism or sexism? confuse
