Why Is Modern Art So Bad?

There's still a lot of aesthetically pleasing art out there, but gone are the days when artists spend their whole careers on one painting, which is kind of sad.

I think this is why modern art is looked down upon. The effort levels just aren't there anymore.

Do you mean Contemporary art? Modern period was a while back!

"Modern art includes artistic works produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s"

OMG I can't believe you just created this thread! I just recently discovered legendary art critic Robert Hughes and he is now my hero! Yep good art is hard. But a new breed of tacky rich (or they never had taste who knows) have spawned a new art world that is too unbelieveable to fathom.

I wish I knew.

I remember seeing this at the time. Hughes is great, isn't he? If you care about art you should stand up for it. He does. Most don't. They just jump on the wagon for fear of being left behind.

For what it's worth I think a lot of the problem is to do with the politically correct idea that it's "all subjective". It's actually unfashionable now to say that anything is better than anything else. This post-modern message is very popular and has encouraged a kind of nihilism in art generally. There is no longer any striving after beauty.

You think Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" is better than Damien Hirst's shark-in-fomaldehide? You elitist asshole!

Of course they could just be using this as an alibi for laziness. Maybe a bit of both.

Well, I don't know much about modern art. shrug Shoot me.

But I'm dying to post a site I found that kind of points out and pokes fun at a lot of the really old classic art, and all the damn allegories and metaphors in various pieces. Maybe that's what's missing in modern art there's not a lot of stuff to find in it, it just is.

-because impressionism/classicism died with the rise of photography, and because, in terms of experimentation and modernism, (hell, there's a genre which was called modernism even before the word modern was applied to art) everything was said and done during the first decades of the 20th Century, that's why

in my opinion, art died with Warhol, both the last of the greats and the first of the crappy-overrated ones...

-oh, and because centuries ago, art was RULED by true-to-life artists and aristocrats who treated art as something serious-tangible (high culture); now it's just "ruled" by a bunch of rich clueless hipsters and guys with suits $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

-oh, and last but not least, because that (non)genre called postmodernism turned art into an "everything is art" kindergarden for adults (aka, wankers); nowadays, shock is more celebrated than merit, and appeal is more important than value

Art as in beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was never impressed with anything that Mr. Warhol created. (IMHO) Good art is still being created across the world. The media and public seem to be indifferent to artist but I blame that on the emergence of TV and now the Internet. Also the lack of investment and support of art education in early school years.

No, I don't think contemporary art is bad.

There a lot of craftman artist.

And I consider photography to be a respectible artform.

2 centuries ago, the materials that artists had were not as fast as in the current days.

Art reflects Zeitgeist, so if you don't dig contemporary art, what does that imply about the current times?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

V10LETBLUES

I love art museums and have been involved in the arts all my life. But I was at the MOCA in LA earlier this summer and yes the art was pretty bad. Most of it there had more to do with the supposed intellectual aspects rather than the physical objects themselves. (a lump of typical upholstery foam on a stand)

Most of the pieces had placecards beside them so you could read what the artist says is the intended meaning behind it.

I asked one of the people that worked there who was standing next to me what she thought of one of the exhibits (a small room with books in it) She told me she doesn't get any of it and we both laughed.

A lot of it, if not most there at the MOCA is not about skill, but about the art of selling BS, by the artists, galleries and museums alike. Sure there were things I was impressed by and loved, but a lot of it was questionable to put it mildly.
