James Harrison defined what being a Steeler was all about. He was hard nosed

and blue collar. He had a great run as a Pittsburgh Steeler and was the NFL defensive

player of the year. I have 3 favorite memories of James: One was the Monday night

clinic several years ago against the hated Ravens when he was a one man wrecking crew and eventually became the NFL defensive player of the year in 2008. The other is when he slammed a Cleveland Brown fan on the

ground when he ran on the field and of course the infamous 90 yd interception return

in the 2009 Super Bowl.

Oh man I loved that 90 yd interception return in the 2009 Super Bowl. In other Steelers news

The decal commemorating Chuck Noll will be worn throughout the 2014 season

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take the field on Sunday, Sept. 7 to open their 2014 season against the Cleveland Browns, they will be wearing a decal on the back of their helmets.

It will be simple and understated, just like the man it’s to honor, and while there will be real meaning and emotion behind it, the decal alone won’t be the difference between victory and defeat because the man it’s to honor always taught preparation and execution and good fundamentals were the tools that won football games. Not decals. To him, things such as decals fell under the category of false bravado.

Next Sunday will be Chuck Noll Day, and as part of a season-long commemoration of his coaching career the players will wear decals on the backs of their helmets and the coaches will wear pins. The decals and the pins will be worn throughout the 2014 season.

“We wanted to do something,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II, “and after we talked about it internally that seemed to be the most appropriate thing we could do. The team will wear it the whole season.”

In other NFL news:

49ers Aldon Smith got suspended for nine games. Another 49er, Ray McDonald, was busted on domestic abuse charges.

Rams cut Michael Sam. Not surprised - they're loaded at his position.

Chiefs gave QB Alex Smith a four year extension.

Derek Carr will start at QB for the Raiders over Matt Shaub. Damn, what happened to his game?

Forty-eight hours until NFL 2014! Time for our annual thread!

What do you guys think about the upcoming season for our Steelers?

I'm ever optimistic but I still have some reservations about our O-line

and the cornerbacks plus every team in our division seemed to have

improve a little better than we did whether through the draft, FA or

both.

Ben needs to stay healthy for the whole season. Don't have faith in our back up QB's. I liked our draft picks though I agree with you about the cornerbacks.

I liked the picks too except for the Dri Archer pick in the 3rd round. That's when I felt the

team should have addressed CB. I wish they could have signed Alterraun Verner in FA when

they pursued him. Ike Taylor would have been history in Black and Gold.

I haven't seen enough yet but at least we're healthy. I would like to see us re-establish a running game and get stronger at the corners.

Agree 100%. I know the 0-line has been in question but the good news is that Maurkice Pouncey is coming back and I like that Mike Munchak is 0-line coach. I did see improvement last year, Ben did play the whole year for the first time in ever.

You know how every one is saying that Troy Polamalu is old (and in football terms he is) I just can't help but think if the Steelers would cut him another team would pick him up right away. Then all these football commentators would be saying "oh what a great addition adding Troy Polamalu".

Troy is older but can still play football. He was healthy for the first time

last season too playing all 16 games. Troy sometimes overruns plays and is out of position sometimes overcompensating for the corners and last season after rookie Vince Williams got exposed on passing downs the team moved Troy in the box as an extra hybrid lb to proctect the middle of the field.

I'm just not high on this guy. I hope I'm wrong but I feel his level of success last season was largely due to the pressure the Panthers front

seven put on qb's. After the Steelers pursuit of cb Alterraun Verner didn't work out the Steelers dropped some serious coin

for Mitchell. I think he is a slight upgrade over Ryan Clark but not worth the dough the Steelers paid for him. I wish the Steelers had a backup plan at CB because I feel the Steelers would have been okay with Will Allen at FS and drafting an understudy and save some of that cash.

Maybe just wishful thinking on my part but I think he's a good fit. He's young and fast. Provided he stays healthy I'm optimistic.

Can't say whether or not he's worth 25mil though.
