Because I Said So

How many of us heard this term as kids from our parents?
How many of us have used this term on our own kids?

The ultimate testament of one's inability or desire to offer explanation or discourse, and simply assert oneself.

BECAUSE I SAID SO. That's why.

Now - flash-forward to the age of the internet & social media. Millions of people offering their OPINIONS and prompting discussions/arguments online with total strangers.

AND more often than not, they turn into battles of will. Anyone who frequents the P&R Forum here knows what I mean. People arguing to prove that they are right, not that their argument is valid.

Recently I found myself immersed in a tit-for-tat on FB, and after a few hours of chewing on the thread, I realized that I wasn't arguing a point, I was arguing with someone's viewpoint!
disbelief

A good example is the campaign to impeach Obama. I drove past a stand the other day, with signs & flags asking people's support.
We're never told exactly WHY he deserves to be impeached, all we know is that they believe him to be "the worst president ever"...and a "tyrant"...and a "socialist"...

In the end it's the same old "Because I said so."

Well, when you fast forward, it's not like you're questioning their authority, you're questioning their beliefs, whereas in the first two sentences, you're questioning their authority. You're not being forced to sign a petition, but you're being forced to do what your parents say. Maybe I'm missing something here shrug lol

Oh God no...I absolutely could not tolerate that as an explanation for ANYTHING from my parents. I needed to know WHY, and because I said so did not cut it! One time my Mother tried to use that on me, and I said "So following your logic, for instance, if you told me to go jump off a cliff, you would have me disregard my better judgement which YOU encourage in me, and do it just because you said so? Do you think you're raising sheep?"

Never heard it again lol

Yeah, my youngest questions everything, and sometimes when he is told todo something that he doesn't want to do (i.e. "do your laundry") he will try to argue me into submission.
The boy is a lawyer-in-training I tell you.

He gets the "because I said so" ALOT.

There's a big difference between being parent and political discourse. I think everyone knows; if I have something to say, I don't bite my tongue. It's rubbed some folks the wrong way and sometimes professional avenues were closed, so be it. Our mother taught us that when you saw wrong or you were being wronged... stand flat footed, look people in the eye, speak up, and out.

However when you are rearing children, teaching them right from wrong and knowing the difference is an entity onto its self. Hopefully when you teach your kids right from wrong... those lessons will extend to all parts and seasons of their lives. My mother was a, because I said so parent. In some instances it was because I said so dammit. 'Bout time we reached 6 or 7, ask her or my father why do we had to do whatever... if you wanted to. wink My mother was one of 9 siblings, can you imagine her parents sitting up debating with nine children about whatever? Please, that would have been damn dumb.

What I knew and learned way before I even had a baby (my baby will be 30 in two weeks) was, my parents knew time was of the essence. When she demanded my brothers and I to do something, she knew the world didn't run on our time. She was teaching use how t navigate through the world and function in it. She also was teaching use, the sun doesn't rise and sat in yo' ass.

So yeah I was a because I said so parent. I also said, When you can take care of yourself and move out of our home, you can live your life however you see fit.
