FormerlyKnowAs: yes i think you should assign homework.... but you need to really think outside the box and make it interesting for the kids... the key is for them to be motivated to do it

the tricky part is how do you react when they don't do it... is it possible to assign the homework without making it compulsory?

while i know setting boundaries is important, i think realistically, given the situation you're in, it's important to not make the whole thing a drag

the lesson i'd be aiming to teach is that with effort comes reward

hopefully if a few kids get involved, it will motivate some others

but how creative you are with what task you assign them is the key imo
