I love looking at sketches of the futuristic designer Syd Mead, the guy who´s also responsible for a lot of design ideas in sci-fi movies we all love....this is his vision for Quatar.

While I do like the idea above, I´m also a bit disappointed because it just looks so boring and gray, with just a little bit of green. Now, mind you, we are talking about a place in the desert here but with solar energy and de-salinization that place could look so much greener and just livelier.

.

As a kid I used to think that in the year 2000 we´d live in a perfect , futuristic paradise but we´re still using combustion engines, still build buildings that turn cities into ugly concrete jungles with no regard for nature or humans´ basic needs, all the while becoming more and more fearful of things that don´t need to be feared at all. I read somewhere that every single person on this planet could easily fit into the State of Texas and the population density would be just like NYC´s .

But it would take some intelligent planning that´s smart and not based on greed and making a quick buck.

I just love looking at Mead´s drawings:

I wish his concepts had a bit more green though.....more trees, more water, maybe some gigantic fishtanks in buildings, more palm trees, whatever.

lol

I don´t really like the current forms of skyscrapers because I´m worried that they´re prone to disaster, like earthquakes and cheap materials, especially in Asia, but I´d love to see more skyscrapers that are safe and make it possible to save space and make living in a big city more affordable for everybody. But like I said, safety and modern ideas should always come before profits and greed.

I like what some New Yorkers are doing these days, creating gardens on rooftops, harvesting veggies and fruits that are grown in places like Brooklyn and Queens and Long Island. That´s a good step in the right direction because most inner city kids have lost all ties to mother nature.

It´s sad that on the one hand, we are living in the best of all times as far as technological , medical, social and cultural advancement are considered....we´ve never had it so good in the history of mankind, yet on the other hand, religious conflicts, rampant racism and jingoism and ignorance are on the rise again. sad

There´s almost no limit to the thing we could achieve as mankind, or how we make the best of not so great situations (for instance turning the gray, cold concrete into something wonderful), and yet we are still dealing with so much negative shit that it almost makes me sick that we don´t use our full potential.

I'm waiting for the bridge that would make it possible to drive around the whole world. Ok, it would still exclude Antarctica, but I don't think the penguins would mind being left alone.

The Bering Strait bridge.

Back to skyscrapers...

I saw something on TV about the proposed Bering Straits bridge. It would be an engineering marvel. However, I don't see it being made. Too many obstacles.

What is that pic with the twisted spires of???

Obstacles are only temporary. wink

I got the picture from a urban farmer site. I think it's an idea for Dubai.

There's this from Dubai. I'm not saying a word. zipped

The best looking I've seen were the former World Trade Center twin towers because they were just simple and straight up in the air. When you add designs or layers to them, it makes them look less tall and frightening looking if you were on top because there would be different landings if you looked down rather than just seeing the street below. I had hoped that when they rebuilt them, that they would be the same simple straight up design but maybe twice as tall with maybe 250 stories. Hell, I'd like to see one built so tall that it almost reaches outer space. I mean, we're in the 2000s now, we're supposed to be big and futuristic like that. lol
