While not huge celebs, the deaths of Anna Nicole Smith and Amy Winehouse were minor reminders of how "train wrecks" can go horribly wrong. Later, when Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston died, it was a bigger echo of how sad these out-of-control lives became circus acts in the press. Every one of them became characters of themselves, and were even mocked by comics (think 'SNL' sketches). It's sad that we watched, knowing they were out of control, helplessly, and it seemed the reality of their demise was not thought of at the time. Now, knowing what we do - how do we stop the next overdose of a celebrity? Corey Monteith, Peaches Geldof, and Philip Seymour Hoffman are further untimely OD's in recent months, indicating the problem won't go away. But how can we change our perception of these stars' cries for help, rather than making their antics what gets our attention? (Lady Gaga and Lindsay Lohan are obviously on the radar now -- but again, how much can we do when "it" becomes so much of who they are?)

If Charlie Sheen qualifies, I would suggest Winona Ryder. While her career hasn't sunk to a Lohan-like level, she was A-list before the shoplifiting arrest.

Well, her star was dimming slightly and she had started to take on a few less prestigious projects. But wouldn't you say she was still a well-respected actress, with A-list roles probably still being offered her?

It just seems that the shop lifting wasnt her downfall, that something more was going on behind the scenes. I remember the media and public pretty much made lite of it with the "FREE Winona" t shirts and such. I remember that Richard Gere movie she did being the last thing from her untill she was Spocks mom.

According to IMDb, she made all of these between the Richard Gere one and Star Trek:

Lost Souls

Strangers with Candy (TV Series)

Friends (TV Series)

Zoolander (uncredited)

Mr. Deeds

S1m0ne

The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things

The Darwin Awards

A Scanner Darkly

The Ten

Sex and Death 101

Welcome (Short)

The Last Word

The Informers

Water Pills (short)

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee

Stay Cool

True, most of these weren't exactly high profile, but one could argue that Mr. Deeds was. BTW: I tried watching that and God was it awful. pooptoast

Wow...there was a gn'r gig on the audience channel. It was damn near a comedy hour. Seeing that fool awkwardly roam the stage and wiggle around in his cowboy boots and hat made me laugh HARD.

So what is going on with Lady Gaga?

As for Winona she was a real "It" girl of her time. I didn't expect her to slip so far out of the limelight. She was Paltrows best friend, remember that? The two were always in the press. I don't think she is on the same shelf with Paltrow and the men they dated any longer.

(I am suprised no one has mentioned Miley yet, very suprised)>

Sly Stone. I think he wins. Last I heard he was living in somebody's van.

Most of the other people mentioned have had career lulls, just went from being popular to not that popular. But most of them manage to live in houses as far as I know. Some of them still get work now and then. Sly's burnt up more good will than anybody I can think of. I wouldn't pay to see him live today, and he's one of my favorite artists of all time.

Not sure I agree. He got kinda fat and lazy, wasn't doing his best work in the late 70s, but he was still a hugely popular touring act til his death. Never lost his voice either.

Or do you mean the time in the 60s when he made all those movies? I think that was just the cycle of entertainment, and he did have a big comeback once he got his thing together.

Lady Gaga went from selling ten million records to two million records or something, that's not a downfall. That's a correction.

JoeTyler

Axl Rose (homophobe misogynist racist non-californian asshole redneck from Indiana who can't sing anymore, completely overshadowed by whatever project Slash might be on)

Charlton Heston (despite his social activism and legendary movies, he'll be mostly known by that stupid rifle association)

The slutty, drug-addict daughters of George W.Puss

George Lucas (from Creator of Celluloid Dreams Come True to laughing stock barely defended even by the hardcore SW fans, Jar Jar was his crime, that and blue screen overkill)

Marlon Brando ('90s version) (ugly family drama, overweight, god-awful films, overpaid, incoherent interviews that made him look prissy, etc)

M.Night Shyamalan (fuck him)

Nicolas Cage (you can only overact so much until the world eventually turns its back on you)

Gary Glitter (pedophile creepo)

Michelle Pfeiffer (where is she now?)

Tom Cruise (misogyny, scienthology, bad sci-fi/action flicks overkill...)

the cast from Twilight (obviously)

everyone involved with the Matrix series

Oliver Stone (two condescendent Castro documentaries + a godawful movie about Alexander the Great??? fuck him; W. and Wall Street 2 arrived too little, too late)
