Commitment to relationships

Why it's that these days a lot of people struggle to commit long term to relationships or work or anything that requires a sense of responsibility?

Because internet and commercial tv are telling us that you should have fun all the time and that fun is the same as happiness and that YOU are the most important person in YOUR life and YOU should always have FUN! Fun is # 1!

Throw away society...throw away friends, relatives, children, lovers.
The ME generation, Superficiality/Vanity/Consumerism/Materialism.
Small hearts & minds, mean spirits.
Lack of morals, ethics, humanity etc.

Yes I do believe these sorts of people are totally self absorbed and if it's not about them having fun and being the centre of attention they become totally depressed. There must be a psyche term for this sad

I actually see the opposite in my direct social circle. Pretty much everyone’s coupled up in long-term relationships/married. I have 2 single girlfriends left and one of those just got out of a relationship that wasn’t working, but not for lack of trying…

I'd say materialism. I remember meeting a fiftysomething year old teacher recently who wondered, Why don't young people protest anymore like I used to when I was young?
My reply was, life these days is just too easy. We have everything, tv, mobiles, all of that will keep you "busy" while not thinking about anything.
But CarrieMPLS' reply is encouraging: not all young folks are braindead!

Yes you are correct thank God otherwise family life would be lost.Unfortunately however a lot of people who do not get what they want all the time seem to lack the commitment to work at the relationship beyond the early stages of strong sexual gratification .

So if you are not in along term relationship you do not deserve any kind of human affection. That is a load of bull I have ever heard. Everybody deserves love and affection, otherwise what is life about? razz

hmm

I agree, but it's more than just the internet and TV.

IMO, there's something about being so comfortable and worry-free (in the grand scheme of things) that allows people to abandon social or communal ideals and instead focus on the self as the most important thing in the universe. Then of course, once you're focused on the self, you pursue that which brings the self the most gratification.

Not to dismiss the media though...the media has been drilling us with images of carefree & fancy-free characters going through life having a party, as some sort of new "norm" to which we should all strive for. Not taking into account the fact that real life is real hard with real problems...which I suppose accounts for so many people then medicating themselves into that "happy" state.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I see the complete opposite of what you're saying...everywhere.

Also, I see more young people engaging in activism now than I've ever seen. Sure, we now live in a world of selfies and some self indulgent behaviour, but that's not the only world we live in.

I think some selfishness and carefreeness at an independent but young age is totally healthy.
