Any Cow News?

Hi, Cow here. It's been a long time since the human press reported any significant bovine news. I am sensing a conspiracy. Cows are curing diseases and inventing life-altering devices beneficial for all specieis (except for horses who, quite frankly, suck). Yet, there is nothing reported on cable news networks or the Internet. Just another example of the world trying to knock cows down.

If you have any cow news that you would like to share with your fellow bipeds, post out now. Just be aware that you put yourself at risk from the "powers that be" whenever you show how utterly awesome that cows are.

Gassy Cows Cause Barn Explosion

THERE WERE 90 OF THEM IN THE GERMAN BARN

By Newser Editors and Wire Services

(NEWSER) – A herd of dairy cows nearly lifted the roof off their barn in central Germany yesterday when methane released by the animals caused an explosion. Police in Hesse state said in a statement that a static electric charge apparently triggered the detonation, and a spurt of flame, at a farm in Rasdorf. The roof was slightly damaged and one cow suffered light burns. No people were hurt. Police say 90 cows are kept in the shed and it wasn't clear why quantities of methane had built up, though bovine belching and flatulence releases large quantities of the gas. (It's not this week's only odd story about passing gas.)

Here's some Cow News

The recent recall of meats produced by Saskatchewan-based Harvest Meats Co. was due to an animal carcass testing positive for bovine lymphosarcoma — a form of cattle cancer, CBC News has learned.

However, the disease is not transferable to humans, so there's no health risk, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.

The CFIA recall notice, released last week, said the products, including wieners, sausages and cold cuts, may contain "unsuitable ingredients."

Initially, the agency didn't go into detail about what those ingredients might be and classified the health hazard level as low to no risk.

However, in response to questions from CBC, the agency provided more information.

"These products are being recalled due to a regulatory violation, in that diseased or otherwise unsound animals are not permitted for use in food production," an agency spokesperson told CBC News in an email.

When CBC asked what was meant by "diseased or otherwise unsound animals," CFIA provided further clarification.

"A CFIA laboratory confirmed a sample from the carcass was positive for bovine lymphosarcoma," the agency said in an email Friday.

A virus is known to cause bovine lymphosarcoma, which is a cancer of the lymph tissues in cattle.

The CFIA spokesperson said the recall was a voluntary one initiated by Yorkton-based Harvest Meats and is categorized as Class III — not likely to cause any adverse health consequences.

A "beef ingredient" that was the source of the problem had been brought in from a supplier who had not followed accepted protocols, said Bill Grant, director of quality control at Harvest Meats in Yorkton.

The supplier was Natural Valley Beef, said Ken Propp, president and GM of Harvest Meats.

"Our position was 'If you [CFIA] have issues with this meat. We have issues with this meat,'" Propp said. "We'll gladly recall it to protect our customers and that's what we did."

"I stand behind the food inspection system in this country," Propp said. "This is proof that it works."

The meats, with expiry dates in August and September, may have been distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

Meanwhile, a similar Class III recall — connected to the Harvest Meats recall — has been issued by Regina-based Ukrainian Co-op Ltd. for wieners they've sold.

According to CFIA, "some of the bulk product recalled by Harvest Meats was repacked and relabelled at the Ukrainian Co-op in Regina."

Hay is really high in fiber and we have four stomachs. I'm trying to do the gluten-free thing right now. Too many pooting incidents like this.

This $110 Cologne Appeals to ... Cows

SCENT IS FOR FARMERS (OR FARMER WANNABES) WHO DON'T WANT TO UPSET THEIR ANIMALS

By John Johnson, Newser Staff

(NEWSER) – A cow pasture may not be the most typical testing ground for a new cologne, but then new colognes typically don't get written up in Modern Farmer. Such is the case with Farmer's Cologne out of Maine, which goes for $110 a bottle and has the unique selling point that cows seem to like it. That is, a chic farmer could wear it and not upset the sensitive noses of his bovine charges. Creator Lisa Brodar mixed natural oils and essences such as sandalwood, sage, and blue tansy to create a scent that has "a woody, earthen musk, with only a hint of the pungency found in mainstream fragrance," writes Jesse Hirsch. His unscientific field test suggests that cows genuinely like it.

In an earlier story in the LA Times, Adam Tschorn gives the cologne a favorable write-up and says it "was redolent of the grain and hay smells of the cow barn from my Vermont childhood ... with an ever-so-slight medicinal note." If you can't picture an old-school farmer spritzing himself with a pricey cologne before milking, that might be because Brodar doesn't see farmers like that as her key clientele. "It’s for the guy in Brooklyn who wants to move back to the land, to become a homesteader … but who still likes going out at night.” One Green Planet likes that the product is vegan and mostly organic. The curious can check it out at the Portland General Store website.

I have enjoyed this thread so far...for the most part. So many great news stories, welcome visuals by honorary cow XxAxX, and of course the usual cow puns and carnivorous barbaric references to eating the precious bovine. We are to be learned from, not sliced up and put on a grill. You humans have so much to learn from us cows. To badly paraphrase the late Jermaine Stewart, we are not just pieces of meat and we can truly stimulate your brain.
