Detroit Dad: Actor or Victim?

There is a man in Detroit who claimed that his son was missing for nearly two weeks. The son was found in the basement of the father's home. The father learned about this discovery at the same time that he was doing an interview with Nancy Grace via satellite and away from his home. A lot of people are confused by this whole situation since the father claims he looked in the basement multiple times. What do you think?

The first video that I saw was the Nancy Grace video and I was a bit skeptical. But, once I saw him arrive on the scene as soon as the police chief's informal press conference wrapped up I felt sorry for him. I think he was just in a state of shock when Nancy Grace told him that his son was "found" in the basement. Then she finally said found ALIVE in the basement. I think this man is panicked, confused and on an emotional rollercoaster.

The cops should look closely at the stepmom...

The police looked in the basement before, didn't find the kid. Kid has a history of running away, just not for this long. Some kids can be pretty darn smart and sly. How Nancy Grace broke the news to the dad, wasn't right. Eh, giving dad benefit of the doubt.

I didn't think the police were possilby inept until the father said the police searched a few times and the last time they searched, they had a search warrant. To me, that's an indicator that the cops either figured out what happened OR they were lazy and screwed up the other times.

I feel bad for the father.

it is very possable that the kid had broken in to get some things and got caught?

The dad's reaction was odd. But what SHOULD it be? In shock for sure: but over what?

The last I saw, the kid is being interviewed by the police and no comments that the child has told to the cops has been made public. The kid is living with his birth mother at the moment.

Attorney: Detroit cops accuse father of abuse, say stepmom told Charlie Bothuell to go in basement

DETROIT (WXYZ) - New information is coming out regarding allegations against the father and stepmother of 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell who was found alive after dis...eral days.

The defense attorney for the father says police are accusing the father of abusing Charlie and accusing the stepmom of telling Charlie to go in the basement and not come out.

The attorney also says blood found on a PVC pipe could be from Charlie itching from a skin condition known as eczema.

There is also information that Charlie's father had put the child on a strict exercise routine to help him with his weight.

Meantime, a probation violation heari...from jail.

Monique Dillard-Bothuell was ordered to pay a $5,000 personal bond and wear a tether.

Dillard-Bothuell was taken into custody after a bench warrant was issued for her arrest. It stems from an alleged probation violation.

She was on probation after pleading guilty to purchasing a pistol without a permit earlier this year. Her probation is scheduled to last for two years.

Dillard-Bothuell was taken into custody after police discovered 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell in the basement of his father's condo complex on Wednesday. Bothuell was discovered hiding behind a 55-gallon drum while police executed their fourth search warrant on the Nicolet Place home.

Child Protective Services removed two other children, a 4-year-old and a 10-month-old from that home. Both Dillard-Bothuell and her husband, Charlie's father Charlie Bothuell IV, were in juvenile court Friday afternoon for a hearing on the children.

The father and stepmom can have visitation with the two youngest children at the discretion of Child Protective Services.

Thanks for the update, I hadn't seen this. I wonder if the police knew the kid was in the basement but wanted to fake out the dad by having him interviewed on Nancy Grace while the police were at the house and "discover" the kid they missed the other few times. I thought the timing of that was very suspect because as soon as this dad finished up with Nancy Grace, he shows up at his house right when the police chief is wrapping up his press conference.

I also had a weird gut feeling when I saw the video clip of the dad passing out fliers. There was just an odd vibe that I got. This man has strange body language or something.

Okay, so the Dad may have been abusive, so the step-mom may have hid the kid out in different place, obviously ending up in the Dad's basement. The police while investigating the situation were suspicious enough to keep searching the house on several occasions. The step-mom has a whole lot of legal problems of her own, which she is currently in custody for, I'm guessing that's why she didn't go to the authorities in the first place. The media needed the shock value, hence the Nancy Grace thing. Now the kid is with the mom, which makes people wonder why he wasn't there in the first place. Does she have issues that aren't good for the kid? Is that it in a nutshell?? Sounds like a complete absolute mess.

And the stepmom is on probation for buying a gun so that also makes me think maybe they were both afraid of the dad and were trying to protect themselves.

Charlie Bothuell V told authorities his stepmother placed him in the basement and told him “not to come out, no matter what he hears,” according to a court record. The 12-year-old had been missing for 11 days when he was found Wednesday in the basement of his home. A petition was filed Friday in Wayne County’s juvenile court regarding Charlie’s two younger siblings, who were removed by Children’s Protective Services from their parents’ custody.

The petition, provided to the Free Press by the state Attorney General’s Office, details allegations of physical abuse Charlie reportedly suffered — he was observed with scars on his chest and buttocks — and efforts to conceal him in the home. Though his stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell, knew he was in the basement, where he had been barricaded behind “boxes and totes,” she did not bring him food, Charlie told authorities, according to the petition. “Charlie reports sneaking upstairs to get food when everyone left the home,” the petition says.

Charlie’s siblings, ages 4 years and 10 months, were removed from the custody of Dillard-Bothuell and Charlie Bothuell IV, who is Charlie’s father. In the petition, which has to be authorized, the Department of Human Services requests that the court “find the children are without proper care and custody,” take jurisdiction over them, make them temporary court wards and place them with DHS.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for July 10 on the petition. Charlie, now in the care of his mother, was found barricaded in the basement of his home in the 1300 block of Nicolet Place while police executed a search warrant on Wednesday.

The petition says that when Charlie was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan for treatment, a doctor observed a half-circular scar on the child’s chest. Charlie said the scar was “a result of his father driving a PVC pipe into his chest,” according to the petition, which also says the child also had old scars on his buttocks from being hit with the pipe. During a search of the home, authorities recovered a PVC pipe with blood on it, the petition says. It’s unclear whose blood it is. According to the petition, on June 23 “Mr. Bothuell disclosed physically disciplining Charlie V with a PVC pipe.”

Bothuell has denied abusing his son. Mark Magidson, Bothuell’s attorney, denied that a pipe was used to beat Charlie. As well, he said that blood found on the child’s clothing was from eczema. “He scratched it like crazy,” Magidson said. Police have said they haven’t ruled out the possibility of child abuse. A warrant request in connection with Charlie’s case has not yet been turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, a spokeswoman for the office said Friday. Magidson said they expect charges. “We’re ready,” he said. According to the petition filed in juvenile court, Charlie’s grandmother told an FBI investigator that the last time she saw Charlie, “he was very skinny, and almost looked like a cancer patient. He had marks all over his arms and chest.” The petition says, because of the allegations of abuse involving Charlie, the other two children should not be in the care of their parents. Referee Leslie Graves ordered that the parents could have supervised visits with the two children at a CPS location.

Charlie Bothuell IV appeared in juvenile court with his attorney, while Dillard-Bothuell, who was arraigned earlier todayon a probation violation, listened in by phone during the hearing. Dillard-Bothuell will retain her own attorney in the custody case, while Magidson will represent Bothuell. “My client is presumed innocent of all charges, the children would not be placed in harm’s way,” Magidson said. “Up until yesterday, these two parents were taking excellent care of these two children.” The petition filed in juvenile court claims that the “home or environment, by reason of neglect, cruelty, drunkenness, criminality, or depravity on the part of the parent, guardian, nonparent adult, or other custodian, is an unfit place for the child(ren) to live.” It also claims that the parents “neglected or refused to provide proper or necessary support, education, medical, surgical, or other care necessary for the child(ren)’s health or morals, or he/she has subjected the child(ren) to substantial risk of harm to his or her mental well-being, or he/she has abandoned the child(ren) without proper custody or guardianship.”

Earlier Friday, Dillard-Bothuell pleaded not guilty during her arraignment on a probation violation stemming from a 2013 weapons charge. She was given a $5,000 personal bond and ordered to wear a GPS tether. A hearing on the probation violation is scheduled for July 11 before Wayne County Circuit Judge Gregory Bill. After his wife’s hearing, Bothuell declined to comment, saying Magidson advised him not to speak. A registered nurse, Bothuell was wearing scrubs as he dodged questions from reporters.

Bothuell previously told the Free Press that Charlie had been home schooled for the last couple of years after some early struggles. However, recent discussions, apparently upsetting to Charlie, had focused on moving to the suburbs and enrolling Charlie in school there. Magidson said Charlie had been told that if he failed to do well, he could be enrolled in military school. Bothuell said Charlie left his home about 9 p.m. June 14 after the boy’s stepmother had a discussion with him over unfinished chores. The boy was in the middle of a workout when he left. During an interview, while the search was under way for Charlie, Bothuell described his son as being trim with a muscular build. He said Charlie was one of the most physically fit 12-year-olds he had seen, and that the boy was extremely proud of his physique.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said police found Charlie on Wednesday in the basement of the home, where he was concealed by a makeshift barricade. He said Charlie was crouched behind a large container. Craig said that, before the search Wednesday, authorities had searched the home several times. Magidson said today that Bothuell’s problem “was he loved his child too much. He cared for him.”

Thanks for posting this. This is really heartbreaking. I'm pretty sure this will go to trial and might cause a media circus. I wish the best for the child.

I don't know if you saw the edited version of that clip with Nancy Grace but the full version shows her saying that the son was found in the basement. BUT, it wasn't until the second time that she told this guy that the son was found alive. So, maybe he was shocked because perhaps he thought he was getting some horrific news on national TV (I don't put that past Nancy Grace and her producers). But, it seems that now that the kid is not being released back to the dad, this can't be good news for him either....perhaps jail time is in his future.

He would have been an excellent actor on America's Most Wanted (not) wink

That's a good point. Wouldn't this dude been on Nancy Grace or some other national TV outlet prior to all this unfolding? Then again, that brings up another touchy subject. Maybe he DID go to media outlets about his son but was turned away until things really heated up. I'm really undecided about this dude's guilt or innocence.

Scars found on Charlie Bothuell reportedly from father driving PVC pipe into his chest

DETROIT (WXYZ) - "He was very skinny, and almost looked like a cancer patient. He had marks all over his arms and chest," is what one of Charlie Bothuell's grandmothers told investigators about how the 12-year-old appeared the last time she saw him before his father and step-mother reported him missing to Detroit Police.

7 Action News is learning new details through a petition filed by Child Protective Services for the removal of Charlie's half-siblings.

After police found little Charlie hidden in his father's basement Wednesday, a half circular scar was discovered on his chest, and the boy is telling investigators that it's the result of his dad, Charlie Bothuell IV, driving a PVC pipe into his chest, according to the court records.

Old scars were reportedly found on Charlie's buttocks. Those injuries also believed to be the result of Charlie being hit with the pipe.

The documents also indicated that the boy also told investigators that his stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell, put him in the basement and barricaded him behind boxes and tote bags.

Dillard-Bothuell reportedly told Charlie not to come out no matter what he hears.

But then the little boy was hungry. Charlie told investigators when everyone left the home, he would sneak upstairs to get food.

Mr. Bothuell and his wife, Charlie's stepmother, began saying Charlie was missing on the evening of June 14, though, they say, Detroit Police did not make an official report until two days later.

When Detroit Police and FBI agents discovered Charlie during a fourth search of the home Wednesday, they found him hiding behind boxes and other debris. He was in a scrunched-down position, but emerged when officers began talking to him.

No injuries were found on Charlie's half-siblings, a four-year-old boy who is autistic and an 11-month-old girl, but Child Protective Services removed the two children on Thursday and placed them with relatives in light of the allegations of physical abuse and neglect of Charlie.

On Friday, during a hearing on the temporary placement of the two youngest children, a referee granted supervised visitation of those children to Charlie Bothuell IV and Monique Dillard-Bothuell, who are the children's biological parents.

Sources expect Mr. Bothuell and his wife to face criminal charges by sometime next week.

In an unrelated matter, Dillard-Bothuell, who is on probation for purchasing a pistol without a permit in 2013, appeared in court on a probation violation - a firearm was found in the home during an earlier search for Charlie.

Dillard-Bothuell was arrested on a bench warrant Thursday evening, and while the judge gave her a $5,000 personal bond, she cannot be released from the Wayne County Jail until she is fitted with a tether. It's possible she could remain in jail until Monday.

As for 12-year-old Charlie, he remains under the care of his biological mother, Africa Shippings. The two have a close relationship, but Shippings allowed Charlie to live with his father and stepmother because of discipline problems.

I still wonder why the cops waited two days before filing the missing child report. I also wonder why they kept going back to the house and didn't find the kid until the 3rd or 4th attempt. Where were they looking in the house the other times? Why didn't they get the warrant sooner? This seems like a huge, heartbreaking mess.

Trolls be gone!

What I'm gleaning from the little bits here and there is that originally people assumed that the father had something to do with the boy's disappearance, based on how people were analyzing the father's Nancy Grace reaction. He didn't, I'm guessing. Maybe the authorities are still trying to figure that out. The rest of this sound like a whole heap of messed up history that's going to leave a very screwed over kid. Really sad.
