I saw Dawn. Pretty good. The only nitpicking I would have are four things, four things that I beleive that would have made it a canon defining classic (in my opinion of course):

1. The score. I wish they had gone with the Goldsmith style of odd voicing and arrangements for all things ape. They touched on it a few times, but most of the score sounded exactly like the same sweet, touching-to-drama-to-action cues of LOST. I think if they had kept LOST style mainstream arrangements for the human parts, and used unconventional and more unique textures for the ape segments (even quiet compassionate moments can be uniquely arranged and voiced) it would have elevated this from already seeming dated. 10 years from now, I think the little LOST-esque piano notes during ape childbirth are going to seem very cliche. It was alienating me from the scene as it was with it’s heavy handedness. I wish there has been less score for the “kind” moments. And I’m a huge fan of something like “E.T.”. But in that case there is a definite strength in interesting arrangements despite their use to emotionally underscore or anchor.

2. There's some problems with human characters and their reactions and dialog. The asshole guy that first shoots the chimp is so obviously off his rails, that it was unbelievable that they would take him out there again. There was a moment when the people are in a car heading towards the city, and there's OTS dialog from the woman that sounds so fake and sort of restating the situation. It seemed like some of the lines really pander as exposition for the less intuitive audience. Trust your audience to be intuitive!

3. It fell for another cliche device that is marring today's genre movies. The big huge CG set piece finale. This didn't need that fight on an epic collapsing building. That actually made it less intense then similar scenes in the old movies where it's just one character who hate another confronting each other in some Shakespearean moment without a disintegrating, physics defying set piece finale. It would have even been more meaningful if the final confrontation had happened back at their ape village, perhaps even in Ceasar’s home which was already given very dramatic meaning as a concept. And that leads to the last wish:

4. I wish they had actually had the bravery (like the original series) to kill off Caesar from his wounds towards the end, or even in a fight with Koba at the end of the second act, and then have his son, Blue Eyes, make the final confrontation with Koba in the third act. It would have been amazing if Koba walks into some situation where he felt like he was the boss (perhaps in the village where he has established his throne room), only to encounter a wall of apes waiting with Blue Eyes as their new leader. It is suddenly revealed that they know Koba shot Caesar (maybe its a revelation captured on the camrecorder since the film keeps pushing electronic devices as a means to capture loved people lost in the past with the featured iPad and DV camera). Then the intense confrontation, chase, cornering, and crucifixion. That would have been so old school Planet of the Apes.

But outside of those thoughts... this was really entertaining. I especially like Koba fooling the gun testing thugs both times. And I like the scene where Koba is on the tank turret and the camera is fixed.
The effects are amazing. The Orangutan in particular, appeared real to me in how he moved and acted.

I've read/heard good things about it, but I cannot watch a movie in which apes are holding machine guns, riding horses. I just can't.

Philomena

:bawl:

4/5.

Philomena is based on the true story of an ageing Irish woman’s search for the son that was taken from her decades ago as an unwed mother imprisoned in a convent. Enlisting the help of recently disgraced political journalist Martin Sixsmith, Philomena embarks on an international journey to find her lost son.

I just saw this today, and it was OK. Not quite as groundbreaking as I hoped it would be but not a cheesy campfest either. It has some similarities to the movie Limitless except that instead of willingly seeking out a drug that will expand one's mind, she is kidnapped and forced into being a drug mule with unexpectedly adverse consequences for her captors. It also has a lot of Matrix elements to it including some of her new found abilities and the discussion of pushing the limits of human expansion.

2-1/2 out of 4 stars.

Great post. That transparently bad ‘black hat’ character from point #2 was definitely my biggest issue with the film. If overall they’d been a little more imaginative & a touch less predictable with story elements like that (& the stuff you brought up in #3) I think they could have gone from really good to genuinely great.

I’m usually the first person to go for darker, harder things, but I part ways with you on #4. Caesar’s story in Rise… had an emotional kick that truly took me by surprise & really made me feel for that poor guy. Yes, it’s a talking animated chimp, but I loved him so much in Rise that if they killed him I think that would have been a complete show-stopper for me.

I think they could have worked on getting an audience bond with Ceasar's son, and it could have been very emotional. They were focused on him quite a bit... but then he wasn't really present in the finale as big pivto point. But what if it had been his face in close up to end it! It becomes his story from youngster to scarred leader. Yes it is dark... but man, the original series was DARK and brutal.

But regardless, I was really entertained by the film!

"Sharknado II - The Second One"

Did it live up to the hype? HELL YES!!!!

The movie starts with a jetliner's tail coming up through the clouds. Where have we seen that before? "Airplane"! Guess who the captain of the jet is? The guy from "Airplane"! (Robert Hays) And they make a joke about eating the fish!

HOW FREAKING AWESOME IS THAT?!?

There's no way I could recap all the cameos, inside jokes and just plain ridiculousness in this movie, but the good news is I DON'T HAVE TO!

"Sharknado II - The Second One" will be playing many times on the ScyFy channel over the next few days. Heck - it's on right now! Go watch it! And look for the Daymond John cameo. "Shark Tank vs. Sharknado". Guess who wins?!?

I give this movie 3.5 severed shark heads out of a possible 5 severed shark heads. I'm sure that rating will go up as I re-watch this gem of a movie.

Why have you not committed this to memory? mad

[Edited 7/5/14 9:59am]

Hi guys,

Myself and my wife watched this over the weekend, kinda based on the reviews here and I am wondering if I saw the same movie as ye........ What was there to like about the movie? Scarlett spoke only 50% of the time, 80% of the movie is the very same with just different guys repeating the same thing. The ending left nothing closed and told us nothing about their kind (how,when,why)....Really perplexed as to any redeeming feature it had except SJ getting her kit off......Am I missing something?........Genuinely curious as to what you liked about it........For me I didn't find much of a plot / story and the ending was too open.......(I know that not every movie has to have a conventionalstory/plot )... Each to their own I guess......Now where did I put my copy of Expendebles 2 (only joking)

I saw it too and was underwhelmed. The book was so much more detailed. Maybe that's why I was expecting more. There was a certain beauty to it...IF you read the book and knew somewhat of the backstory. I found myself caring little for the humans and their plight and felt a sad emptiness watching said humans going about their humdrum lives at the mall/club/jobs, etc. Maybe that was the point.

Hi guys,

Myself and my wife watched this over the weekend, kinda based on the reviews here and I am wondering if I saw the same movie as ye..... What was there to like about the movie? Scarlett spoke only 50% of the time, 80% of the movie is the very same with just different guys repeating the same thing. The ending left nothing closed and told us nothing about their kind (how,when,why)....Really perplexed as to any redeeming feature it had except SJ getting her kit off.....Am I missing something?.....Genuinely curious as to what you liked about it.....For me I didn't find much of a plot / story and the ending was too open.....(I know that not every movie has to have a conventionalstory/plot )... Each to their own I guess.....Now where did I put my copy of Expendebles 2 (only joking)

Just like we don't care much for livestock
We don't get too emotionally attached when it will end up on our dinner plate.
Isserley didn't relate to humans beyond her script, she maintained unsympathetic distance, she had to because of her job.
I'm the mistake you wanna make

Bernie - 3.5/5 felt like a slight, minor movie to me, but I still really liked it.

300:Rise of an Empire. 2/5 "an empty exercise of stylish gore" pretty much sums it all up for me. Too bad. Looks like a lot of people worked very hard on it.

I 'got' that part and ScarJo did an amazing job portraying detachment. Her face was the perfect balance between beauty and 'let me hurry up and kill these chickens.' lol They just left TOO MUCH to interpretation. Like the lovemaking scene. Not saying anything had to be graphic...just a little more explanation. shrug wink
