Family Cat Stops Vicious Dog Attack On Boy

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A cat came to her best friend's rescue Tuesday when the young boy was attacked in his driveway in Southwest Bakersfield.

The surveillance video shows the boy playing on his bicycle when a dog sneaks up behind him and grabs his leg.

The family's cat, named Tara, rushes the attacking dog and chased it away.

The boy's mother told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine this morning.

She also said the dog belonged to a neighbor and is now under observation.

there's no way a child that young should be so close to the road... and the mother wasn't right next to him

want to be able to relax a bit while your child is playing?... take them out to the back yard where you have control of the circumstances they'll face

We have a wild cat we have been feeding for a number of years. It is frightened of humans yet has built a rapport over the years with our dog. We have had two occasions a dog entered our garden. To get in it would have had to climb/jump 6ft fence, then climb/jump a 4ft fence (we seperated garden for play area for small and noisy ones). 1st time the dog entered my kitchen and attempted to attack my dog and I, near poop my pants with fright neutral
2nd time the dog went for my dog in our garden. The wild cat appeared and went for the dog and attacked it, the wild cat went nutzoid not a kitty to be messed with. I've never seen a dog move so fast jumped and climbed over two fence. The cat returned and rubbed itself against our dog and both laid down beside each other.

Got to love kitty's smile

Holy surveillance around that property.

It's infuriating that people allow their pets to just roam free outside. It's also frustrating to see a dog just go after a person like that, as there is always a shitty history that comes with it.

Poor little guy. I do find it odd that his mom didn't pick him up, she ran over then ran away and he followed. I would have had him in my arms immediately.

Hopefully the dog is not just under observation (whatever that means) but the owners are looked at closely as well. I also hope they are paying for that kid's medical expenses.

I think she was going after the dog not leaving him...I would have had to likely over-react and do something a little more ummmm permanent. I am not a cat guy at all...but I love this cat. I own dogs and love dogs...and as a dog owner and lover I say this dog is beyond saving...wtf!!

I wondered about that. I thought maybe when the cat came back, it went for her too! lol

It amazes me. I see it all the time, especially during the summer months. When the sun rises, people kick their children out into the streets and let them stay out ALL DAY, unsupervised! I swear, I've seen children outdoors from sunrise til sunset, absolutely no adults in sight! They are crossing the street and riding their bikes into uncoming traffic and not paying attention. They are fighting with each other and no one can find their parents. And then if something happens to the kid, the irresponsible parent is calling every lawyer in town to see how much money they can sue for. disbelief

I just hope the irresponsible dog-owner paid the kid's medical bills, along with compensation for pain and sufferring. They violated the leash law and they can get sued for a lot of money in court over this.

this video has went viral, lol

see, before I saw it I thought the cat was some vagabond black cat looking for adventures and shit, protecting the innocent (awesome); now that I know that the cat was actually the property of the kid/mom, I think the video is kind of tame, I mean, are you really surprised that a cat attacked a medium/small-sized dog who was attacking its onwer?

it's cool the cat was so fierce; i can't help wondering what happened to the dog to make it behave like that. poor thing. yes, iknow it's weird to feel sorry for the dog, but usually when creatures act like that it's because of what happened to them earlier on. anyway, kudos to the cat1

Am I the only one who noticed that this vicious dog really went out of its way to attack that kid? I don't think the dog's owner has made any public comments. Perhaps they are afraid of getting sued. That dog is clearly vicious. It was an unprovoked attack on a child.

Seriously? My sisters and I were outside from dawn to dusk when we were kids. My mom used to shoo us out of the house to play all the time. And she did not sit around watching us all the time.

Not when we were as little as that kid, of course. But I was riding my bike around the block by myself (and it was a big block) and walking more than a mile home from school by the time I was 8. Looking out for my three younger sisters, too. I was babysitting at 10.

I had a few scary and irresponsible moments, but that's how you learn. shrug

I finally allowed my almost 9 year old son to walk his dog (on our dead end street)...but I have to admit, I feel super nervous about it. I probably wouldn't feel as nervous if he was out with a buddy or two...but I can't help it. I'm one of those nervous moms , I guess.

When a good friend of mine was 9, her mom let her take the bus downtown to the library, and have lunch (a hot dog and a root beer) at the soda fountain at the local department store. By herself. And it wasn't just a one-time thing - she did it every Saturday. lol

Also...if you had four kids (like my mom) rather than just one, you'd be begging them to get out of your house.

On the news this morning it was said that this was a 4 year old austic boy riding his tricycle, when the neighbors dog got out when they opened their gate to back the car out. It was those neighbors that called 911. The dog's in custody. The mom didn't know what happened until she saw the security footage. That's all I've heard.

Yeah it seems like the only videos that have been released and subsequently posted on Youtube don't show the neighbors at all. I think this news story is going to be around for a while because of how bizzare it is. Maybe the cat will get a reality show.....
