No, they picked it up from the gay community who were all into that bushy beard look about 5 years ago.

Hipsters can be gay too.

I don't really understand fads or trends to be honest. What's in one year, is seen as stupid the next year. Which is why i don't understand why people don't just do what makes them happy. VS going with what the majority says for them.

Well what makes some people happy, is doing the thing that's cool to do.

Spotting the trend and jumping in there. They want their clothes to "say something" but clothes don't talk, so they have to let people who see them form impressions in their mind, and that counts as "making a statement". The statement used to be fairly obvious, you can look at someone's clothes and know they're saying "I like heavy metal music" or "I ride a motorcycle." Now the symbols are more subtle, only understood by the people who are part of it and they look either utterly normal or utterly silly to us outside it.

It's kind of like I hear about Mod fashion in England in the 60s. Suddenly the fashion would shift to having a jacket with 5-inch side vents, and the ones who knew could spot the cool kids. But to the rest of the world they just looked like sharp-dressed young men.

Lucky for me I'm too old to care about such things. I'm gonna wear rock band Ts, polos and bowling shirts for the rest of my life.

Fads or trends are simply people liking a style or item and appropriating it for themselves to get a feeling of more fun, more sexy, or more beauty/style but even more importantly... a communal feeling. But the millions of taste influences are contantly changing combination, so things that appeal change to unappealing... and then many years later can come back. I'm waiting for the reboot of powdered wigs and ribbons.

And in the grand scheme of things...who really cares what harmless things others do to have a sense of belonging.

Silly me, thinking beards were just a trend in Iceland lol

I've personally never thought about growing a beard, even the stubble look doesn't suit me IMO.

I think the beard growing campaigns have certainly influenced things over here, I even grew a moustache back in 2011 for Moustache March (for testicular cancer awareness). And I agree that the "bear" look kinda crossed over, American musician John Grant, who is openly gay and lives in Iceland, sports this look and now a lot of guys here (gay/straight/whatever) have the same type of beard (see picture below) - John Grant might not be popular internationally but his songs are HUGE over here...

It seemed to really come in with the whole neo-folk thing.

I dunno. I've had a beard for years and I wear it mainly because it's like a Wonder-Bra for my face. It makes me look like I atually have a jawline. razz

My faux-jawline is the ONLY reason why I haven't gone clean-shaven.

THIS.

I've noticed it too. Are you in the UK?

Unusual mohicans are also popular.

No, New York.

Long Island to be exact, and even though we're far removed from the big city we do get all the trends hitting us fast.

My youngest asked the haircutter for it, and she said that typically they shave the part to make it bolder...but she wasn't doing it on him because he's so young.

True, it' like German precision. Every young man hipster has it.

I had it all throught the 70's. lol

But of course it was shaggy on each side of the part back then.

Now, it's rigid, neat on the new wave of guys.

yeah, no offense but the guy I work with shaved his beard once and we all thought he was a hipster at first but it was clear that he looked a million times better with the beard

but it does fit into his hipster look too, skinny jeans and all

there has been a teacher at my son's school that sounds like that

3 years ago when he started there he had the beard, waxed moustache, skinny pants and tats and his hair shaved all around except the top, which grew longer and longer until he now wears it tied up in a bun lol

Not too long ago I read about the Seinfeld-esque, so called 'norm-core' look (mom-jeans and other ill-fitting sportswear) being the next big thing for Brooklyn's Hipsters - can't say that I've actually seen any of that on the street around here. But maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong circles.... So, now that beards have gone mainstream, is there a counter-movement? Anyone noticed that?

I haven't seen it yet, but I have HEARD that "mom jeans" and high-waisted pants are the new "thing".

High waisted jeans/pants have been around for several years. They are not like mom jeans at all.

Hipsters usually just wear whatever facial looks eccentric to be hipstes. Hobo beards and evil staches seem to be the trend.
