Children's " right-to-die"

It was something that never crossed my mind until I read an article about Belgium. Personally it makes me uncomfortable, granted I've never been faced with the situation. But it had me thinking is this the only country that has brought the issue to the table? I think it's the only country that has allowed it so far.

(CNN) -- Does a terminally ill child in intolerable pain have a right to die? Belgian lawmakers said yes.

The lower house of the Belgian Parliament adopted a bill that extends the right to euthanasia for minors, the Parliament said Thursday on its official Twitter account. The law passed 86 to 44 with 12 abstentions.

That followed a vote by the country's Senate in December supporting the measure. The next step would see the bill go to the king, Philippe, to be signed into law.

The euthanasia bill is widely supported -- but has stoked fierce opposition from critics.

Belgium legalized euthanasia in 2002 for those in "constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated." Minors were included in the original proposals but were left out of the final legislation for political reasons.

Well its the "humane" thing to do when a pet is terminal and in pain, so why not a child?

I guess for most countries its a wait and see how it works because its like tumbleweeds on finding out if its a discussion elsewhere. I know in the States it ain't even on the table. Oh boy to see that debate. Popcorn city. I think somebody might even get punched.

I coach student nurses doing their internship. Euthanasia is a theme that evokes a lot of discussion and emotions.

I don't think Americans have a realistic perspective on it, as they don't know it. What I sense is that they think there is a risk of children who are after the inheritence to "kill" their parents. That is not the case at all.

There are a lot more people, who are suffering from deadly diseases, who request for euthanasia and can't get approval then there are people who do get the approval.

The horrific stories I hear from the students working at the Children Oncology impact me a lot. I'm very glad that I never will be confronted with these kind of dillemma's.

My dad knows what to decide for me, if that situation might ever occur. And I know the wishes of my friends and relatives too. However, you never know how you will react when you are the one who has to decide.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
