WA. State Tragic Landslide near Oso

Search and rescue crews located an additional six bodies, bringing the total number of deceased to 14 in Saturday's massive landslide near the towns of Oso and Darrington.

Snohomish County Emergency Management Director John Pennington said reports of names of people missing or unaccounted has grown from 108 to 176; he emphasized that many of those names could be duplicates.

The size of the list raised concerns the death toll would rise far above the 14 people who have been confirmed dead after the 1-square-mile slide Saturday swept through part the area about 55 miles northeast of Seattle.

They have found more people deceased, but until they are brought out of the slide, they are not confirmed as deceased. (I believe they said around 8 more people found-making it 22 so far.)

Why are people allowed to build houses on land that has had numerous landslides in the past 4 decades, the last one being in 2006????????

That is the question being asked-but the homes were located to the left of the river. The landslide is on the right and picked up the river which pushed the slide further.

As of tonight 25 confirmed dead.

Friday there is supposed to be some grim announcement. I'm guessing it's turning into a recovery mission no longer a search mission.

There is also some information inferring that the death count will go up, but not confirmed.

Washington Officials Identify More

1 April 2014

ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — The official death toll from Washington state's mudslide has increased to 28, and the Snohomish County medical examiner's office says 22 of those victims have been identified.
That's up from 27 dead with 19 identified Tuesday morning.

The latest names added to the victims list are 65-year-old Thom E. Satterlee, 60-year-old Lon E. Slauson and 23-year-old Adam Farnes. Like the rest, they died of blunt force injuries suffered in the March 22 slide northeast of Seattle.
Satterlee and Slauson had been on the missing list. Officials say the number of people who are missing now stands at 20.
Officials say receding floodwaters near the rural community of Oso are helping in the search for human remains by exposing more sites that can be examined.

The death toll from last month’s landslide in Oso rose to 33 Monday.

Thirty of the victims have been identified. The latest name added to the list Monday was 30-year-old Billy Spillers. Spillers, a Navy chief petty officer, lived on Steelhead Drive with his wife Jonielle and their four children.

Spiller's 4-year-old son, Jacob, survived. Jonielle was not home when the landslide hit.

Spiller's daughter Kaylee, 5, and stepson Jovon “Jojo” Mangual, 13, were also killed. His other daughter, Brooke, is still missing.

EVERETT, Wash. -- President Barack Obama plans to survey damage from the Washington state mudslide later this month and will meet with victims, first responders and recovery workers, the White House said Tuesday.

The White House said it plans to release further details about the president's trip to Oso, Wash., in the coming days.

Obama spoke with Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., on Tuesday about the recovery effort.

"He called to say that he's going to come out to visit the site on April 22," she said.

Landslide survivor: 'I was not letting that baby go'

Posted on April 9, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Updated today at 7:11 PM

SEATTLE -- A woman pulled from the rubble of the Washington mudslide along with her infant son is starting to recover physically from her ordeal after six surgeries, but she and her doctor acknowledged Wednesday that the emotional healing will take a very long time.

Certain sounds bring Amanda Skorjanc, 25, right back to March 22, when a river of mud and debris wiped out her Oso neighborhood and killed at least 35 people.

"If the wind blows too hard. If someone is pushing a bed past me, and it rumbles the floor a bit. It brings back the same sight over and over again," Skorjanc said Monday in her first interview since the massive mudslide. She spoke at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to a pool of reporters.

Skorjanc was sitting with her son that Saturday morning watching videos when the lights in her home started to shake and blink. She looked out the door and, like in a movie, saw houses "exploding" from the force of the slide.

The neighbor's chimney was coming toward her. She held her son tightly and turned away from the door.

"I held onto that baby like it was the only purpose that I had," Skorjanc said. "I did not let that baby go for one second." ...When the earth stopped moving, Skorjanc was trapped in a pocket formed by her broken couch and pieces of her roof.

"They" say right now she's suffering survivors remorse. I hope she gets through it well. Sometimes all you can do is not let go.
