Malaysia Airlines Flight ...to Beijing

Malaysia Airlines Flight Carrying 239 Goes Missing on Way to Beijing Expand

At about 1:40 pm EST, a passenger jet flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared from radar sc...c control. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which was scheduled to land four hours later, was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

"Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft," the airline said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline is in the process of contacting family members of the passengers and crew, 160 of whom were from China; the other 79 were from 12 different countries.

Malaysia Airlines vice president of operations told CNN that, at the time it went missing, the Boeing 777 had about seven hours of fuel left, which means it would have run out by 8:45 pm EST.

UPDATE 10:19 PM: Four Americans, including one infant, were onboard the flight, according to a Malaysia Airlines official. From the airline's most recent statement:

The passengers were of 14 different nationalities - citizens from:-

China – 152 plus 1 infant
Malaysia - 38
Indonesia - 12
Australia - 7
France - 3
United States of America – 3 pax plus 1 infant
New Zealand - 2
Ukraine - 2
Canada - 2
Russia - 1
Italy - 1
Taiwan - 1
Netherlands - 1
Austria - 1

UPDATE 9:52 PM: According to a vice president at Malaysia Airlines, there were no distress calls or problems before the plane vanished from radars at 35,000 feet.

From James Fallow at The Atlantic (UPDATE: As commenter StegoToys noted, Flight Aware's coverage usually ends in about the same place for all flights, making it difficult to tell exactly where the plane lost contact):

The most illuminating information I have seen so far is this log from Flight Aware. It shows that the airplane had leveled off at 35,000 feet — and then suddenly was not transmitting any more information about its location, speed, altitude, or rate of climb or descent.

UPDATE 9:16 PM: The flight disappeared from radar in Vietnam-controlled airspace, according to China's Xinhua News.

Here's a screen shot of the flight's path from FlightAware:

Some arseholl put out info that it had landed safely in china and families being called by the passengers. Seems that was a hoax and an unbelievably cruel thing to do if that's the case.

Unconfirmed reports now that wreckage has been found.

Don't worry. This changes nothing for your incredible odds at a safe flight.

Some reports that two kiwis were on board.

Ok what's up with the two passengers who were listed as on the plane but who weren't on board? Who stole their passports? hmmm

http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/asia-pacific/malaysian-plane-still-missing-amid-false-passport-claims-1.1717931

European officials said two people on board were using false identities...no confirmed signs of the plane or any wreckage, more than 24 hours after it went missing. Operations will continue through the night, officials said. There were no indications of sabotage nor claims of a terrorist attack. But the passenger manifest issued by the airline included the names of two Europeans who, according to their foreign ministries, were not in fact on the plane.

And no distress calls from 35,000 ft? confuse

Referring to the stolen passports...

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 3:57 a.m. ET Sunday ]

Two people who traveled on the missing Malaysian Airlines flight under the passports of an Italian and an Austrian citizen appear to have bought their tickets together, according to China's official e-ticket verification system Travelsky.

The tickets were bought from China Southern Airlines in Thai baht at identical prices.

The ticket numbers are contiguous, which indicates the tickets were issued together.

Passports get stolen all the time, some reported some not. Also, was watching a tv show and a lot of fake passports are made and they look like the real deal. I guess borders will have to tighten up on checking for fake travel documents.

So maybe it did not crash? Maybe it was hijacked and was flown and landed at some other site? If it crashed there would be wreckge. No wreckage no crash. Where is the plane?

At least not in that flight path. But there is a lot land and sea...so we will see.

But surely the pilot can't disable the transponder? of that's what it's called that relays the exact location. Isn't that locked away in the black box so how could it dissapear in a hijacking.

I've no idea. It's a bloody mystery but not knowing doesn't men you get to assert something else. It just means we don't know.

I don't understand how transponders and beacons work so maybe I'm wrong. Can a pilot disable all means of tracking an aircraft or it's black box? If they can then you're theory has merit as being one possibility. If they can't, then doesn't it just bring up more questions than it answers?

And not finding wreckage doesn't mean there's no wreckage. It just means if thier is wrekcage, it not's been found.

Not to be a pedant but you said " If it crashed there would be wreckge. No wreckage no crash"

I assumed you meant "no wreckage found means no wrekage, no crash" Perhaps I misunderstood but in essence of course if there really is no wreckage there was no crash but we can't assertain an absence of wreckage as fact at this stage.

What would have to happen for an airliner to sink to the bottom of the see intact? Or is that just silly talk?

yeah, and there is a difference between their, there, and they're, but i know what you meant.

if there was a crash there would be wreckage ... and they search the flight path and have yet to find any. even the oil slick was not from the plane.

to sink in tact would likely have to be lowered into the sea by a condoled device.

And what I said "if there was a crash there would be wreckage" that is true. even if it was hard to find. I then repeated it a different way. I am suggesting it did not crash but was flow away. Which is about as likely as crashing and sinking intact. But there is a large area that it could have crashed at or been flown to and landed.
