Share something about your homeland

These boards obviously get very "Americentric" (i.e. the "80's America" thread)...so how about we allow EVERYONE to post interesting facts/trivia/pics/etc. about where they live?

What would you like to share about your homeland?

Could be the country in which you reside, could be the city in which you live, or how about the country from whence your parents/grandparents came from.

Show us your stuff!

every law, the educational system, down to the religious doctern

has been made to see my people stay in subservience or die.

i have the feelin that it will soon be back to the days that if

one walks with their head up, it will be looked upon as an

act of aggression, punishable by death. biggrin

So I live on Long Island...part of the State of New York. The NYC boroughs of Brooklyn & Queens are geographically part of L.I., but politically & socially, they're not considered part of the island.
shrug

We have beaches on the South Shore

Mansions on the North Shore

Farms, vineyards & celebrities in the Eastern parts

Not much in the way of Landmarks though.

When Zombiekitten paid a visit, I showed her the BIG DUCK.

I live in New Jersey, USA.

  1. Where the NY Jets and NY Giants REALLY play football...

  2. Where the Superbowl was REALLY held...

  3. Where the Statue of Liberty REALLY stands...

biggrin

Here is some trivia about my state:

  • New Jersey has the highest population density in the U.S. An average 1,030 people per sq. mi., which is 13 times the national average. (There are a LOT of us!)
  • New Jersey has the most dense system of highways and railroads in the U.S. (and traffic! pissed)
  • New Jersey has the most diners in the world and is sometimes referred to as the diner capital of the world. (Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a roll... foodnow)
  • North Jersey has the most shopping malls in one area in the world with seven major shopping malls in a 25 sq. mile radius. (a total of 62 in the state)
  • New Jersey has over 50 resort cities and towns, some of the nations most famous, Asbury park, Wildwood, Atlantic City, Seaside heights, Cape May. (Atlantic City is where the street names came from for the game monopoly AND has the longest boardwalk in the world).
  • Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Redman, Das EFX, Naughty by Nature, Sugar Hill Gang, Lords of the Underground, Jason Alexander, Queen Latifa, Shaq, Judy Blume, Arron Burr, Whitney Houston, Eddie Money, Frank Sinatra, Grover Cleveland, all New Jersey natives. (I graduated with Artie Lange confused)
  • The light bulb, phonograph (record player), motion picture projector were invented by Thomas Edison in his Menlo Park laboratory
  • New Jersey has the tallest water tower in the world (in my town.. nod)
  • The first baseball game was played in Hoboken.
  • The first intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick, in 1869. Rutgers College played Princeton. Rutgers won. (My alma mater woot!)
  • The first Drive-In Movie theatre was opened in Camden. cool

**As a music fan, I am able to attend concerts in both NYC and Philadelphia. headbang

Winnipeg was the first North American city to implement a central emergency number (999 at that time).

http://www.cbc.ca/archive...-help.html

We used to have bragging rights to be being the coldest city in the word with a population over 500k, but apparently we've lost that title to Irkutsk, Russia.

nod ...or rather, was. Now it's open to the public.

The largest Long Island "Gold Coast" home was Oheka Castle, which was the largest home in the USA for the LONGEST time...served as inspiration to F. Scott Fitzgerald for "The Great Gatsby";

It's a hotel/catering hall nowadays - I actually attend an industry dinner there every year. It's beautiful.

The country's largest residential compound today is also on Long Island...

It's called "Fairfield Pond" and valued at $170Million! This 63 acre home is considered the largest residential compound in America. The 29 bedroom beachfront home of publicity shy billionaire Ira Rennert has 5 sports courts, a bowling alley and a $150,000 hot tub.
