Chicago homeless man wins $50,000 Lotto; Then he gives it away to fellow homeless people!

hmmm Wonder if any of you would do the same with you lottery winnings?

A homeless man wins the lotto but decides to keep living in a tent outside.

On April 4,Huffington Post reported that Dennis Mahurin won a $50,000 jackpot prize in the Michigan lottery but decided to use the money to help his friends in the homeless community -- which he has been a part of since 1978.

"With all the other homeless people around here, I've made up my mind. I'm gonna give them each $100," Mahurin said. While $50,000 is enough money to get Mahurin off the streets, he has chosen to spread the wealth around. $100 obviously isn't a lot of money, but for someone homeless, it buys them a couple of good meals.

The homeless man wins the lotto after purchasing the ticket at a local gas station. While some think he's doing a selfless act, others are already debating that Mahurin is making a huge mistake. Do you think he should use the money to better his life?

"He is a great guy, has an awesome sense of humor. I care deeply for him and he is a very decent gentleman. He comes into my store three to four times a day," said Sandra Rankin, an employee at the gas station where Mahurin bought the ticket (via Huffington Post). It sounds like he spends his cash on the lottery quite a bit... perhaps he's waiting to hit the "big one."

When a homeless man wins the lotto, no one expects him to give the money away -- but as most people know, being homeless is a way of life for many people... it's all they have known for so long and some don't want that to change.

That's awesome.. but still he should at least use some on a hotel room.. especially since he won. There are a lot of fools out there.. on the streets.

Sandra then added, "But not enough to let him live with me." chatterboxlol

Nah, but for reals, that is an AMAZING act of generosity, and a lesson in humanity.

Bravo to you Dennis Mahurin!! thumbs up!

Awesome my ass, I think it's ridiculous. Dude could have used that loot to get himself together. I'm with MoBetter, I wonder about his state of mind too.

Some people don't need much money to survive. Before you question his sanity, how about saluting his generosity?

If everyone in the world thought more like this man does, there would be NO poverty! That's the truth.

I call it foolishness not generosity - you take care of yourself first. Thank goodness I don't think like that cat otherwise I wouldn't have a pot to piss in. If I ever get lucky and hit it big, I'd share it only with immediate family and a few close friends.

What a great story. He's definitely a better man than I am because I would have used every dime of it to get my own ass off the streets.

the fact is many homeless people suffer from mental illness... if he has his wits about him, then bravo

i'd just hate to think this is something he'll later regret... this may have been his chance to turn his life around... it would be a sad thing for him to have missed that due to an illness

but if that's not the case, and he's happy... rock on

The $50,000 is his to do with what he wishes. That being said, $100 won't be of much help to the individuals in the long run, but it would have gone a very long way to the organizations helping the homeless.

I hope his generosity touches others and helps those he gifted.

There is nothing wrong with that. Most big winners lose their money quickly because the lottery is a dumb tax on the poor. Because poverty exists in the mind just as much as tangibly sensing it, simply dropping cash in one's lap does not make someone all of the sudden know how to keep the money (only the physical poverty has been addressed but not mental), and/or hopefully make the money "grow" into more money (so it can then be shared wisely).

Anyways if it were me, I would have consulted a professional about how not to lose the money.

What would a homless person do with 50,000 anyway?

You buy [i]things]/i] that cost money to keep.

If you don't pay to keep them they get taken away anyhow.

50,000 doesn't go too far.
