Apparently the man tried to burn his house down for the insurance money.

He got caght and was looking at a minimum sentence of 20 years...he was 53.

20 years for small time insurance fraud? Sounds crazy excessive.

Should be around 3 years max.

Exactly. These guys commit these crimes because they're afraid of being... what? Middle-class?

Of course it's sad he felt the need to end his life, but you did the crime, you do the time. Lots of people would kill for three squares a day and a bed to sleep in.

That doesn't make sense. It contradicts what you stated. If they have scruples, then there are not lots of people willing to kill for three hots and a cot. Factually, there appear to be very, very few if any.
