Hysteria (2011) - The truth of how Mortimer Granville devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science. Silly, lightweight comedy. star star 1/2

I thought the newest Men in Black was boring and not funny. I wouldn't even watch it for free a second time when it comes on cable tv.

I did like the Girl the the Dragon Tatoo. Good movie.

Good premise, and nicely realised in many ways. Something about it didn't quite ring true for me, and it kind of pulled its punches with its rather mawkish scenes of the alien 'family man', and the super-racist military dude, I thought. Still worth a look, though. starstarstar

A nice 'little' film that's much better than the sort of Dangerous Minds-style tale the setup might lead us to expect, though not quite as 'alternative' as it thinks it is. Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps give compelling performances that carry the film even when the script clunks a bit on its way through the inner-city. It gets at least an extra half star from me for being about dialectics, and because the way dialectical ideas are actually embedded pretty effectively within the characters' stories. Granted, this kinda gets ditched at the end, but, still: marks for a good effort! starstarstarstar

Very good. Miachel Fassbender deserves an osar for his role. Magnificant!

Elena (2011) - When a sudden illness and an unexpected reunion threaten dutiful housewife Elena's potential inheritance, she must hatch a desperate plan ...

Cool story about class warfare within a single family, but this may be the slowest film I have ever seen. Every scene consisted of extended shots and drawn out sequences of the minutiae of everyday life in Moscow. This is to be seen only when you are wide awake. Having said all that, it still was very well done. star star star star

Une vie de chat / A Cat in Paris (2010) - In Paris, a cat who lives a secret life as a cat burglar's aide must come to the rescue of Zoe, the little girl he lives with, after she falls into a gangster's clutches.

The animation isn't as sophisticated as other recent films I've seen (The Illusionist, The Secret of Kells), but overall it's a funny, charming film. I'd recommend it for older kids. star star star 1/2

Bad Teacher Poster

I didn't want to like it and even refused to watch it the first time my wife brought it home. I was a bit more willing the second time and had to admit, it was quite funny and even very well acted. I was even willing to watch it a second time when it was over - mostly to soak up the performances by Lucy Punch and John Michael Higgins. Fuck, were they good. Seriously.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012 - A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them.

Not being that familiar with Wes Anderson (of his films, I had only previously seen The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox), I did not expect to like this movie as much as I did. The two young leads, 1965 setting, art direction, Françoise Hardy and so many other elements combined to create some real movie magic. I'm going to just give this one a perfect star star star star star

I'm not a Wes Anderson fanboy or anything, but i am very much looking forward to this. If all goes well this week i'm going to duck out of work & go see it Thursday.

I'm probably going to see Prometheus as well, though I'm not too enthusiastic about it. I was already luke-warm on the film when I heard Ridley Scott saying he was inspired by Eric Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods (yeesh), and the middling response has dampened whatever enthusiasm I had left, but I'm still going to go.

I've watched the Aliens series over the last week as a warm-up. Resurrection was the only one that surprised me in that I didn't find it to be quite as miserable a failure as I remembered, though I still thought it was pretty poor.

Alien - 4 1/2

Aliens - 4

Alien3 - 2 1/2

Resurrection - 1 1/2

[img:$uid]http://popbytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/rock-of-ages.jpg[/img:$uid]

IT WAS HORRIBLE. I rate it R for "R"egret I saw it.

Funny though, th emale lead is kind of like the lead singer in The Family in looks. And he is molded into an unfortumate pop star type....

There's so many people in this too. It's really bad.

I actually just turned this off. I was about 10 minutes into it, but decided it was a little too dour for a Sunday evening going into a heavy work week. I decided to watch the latest DVD from the Howard Hughes Medical Institue (Bones, Stones, & Genes - the origins of modern humans) instead. For anyone that's interested, the HHMI has a nice little catalogue of science lectures on dvd that they distribute for free - no shipping or charge of any kind.

I finished Take Shelter about an hour ago. 3.5/5.

I liked Darjeeling, but Tower Heist was odd. I expected a comedy and it was not funny at all. Just okay IMO
