Josh Powell, a person of interest in the Dec. 6, 2009 disappearance of his wife Susan, killed himself and the couple's two young sons on Sunday in a planned, intentional explosion, police confirm Sunday.

According to the The Seattle Times, a case worker delivered the boys to Powell's house Sunday near Tacoma, Wash., when Powell pushed the worker out of the house. Moments later, there was an explosion. Officials have recovered three bodies from the house that they believe are Josh Powell and his sons Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.

The case worker "was forced out, and an explosion happened shortly thereafter," Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, told the newspaper.

The Associated Press reports that Powell's lawyer in his custody case, Jeffrey Bassett, received a three-word email from his client minutes before the explosion. It said, "I'm sorry, goodbye."

Only days earlier, a family court judge told Powell that he was not likely to get custody of the boys anytime soon, and that he needed to undergo a psychological review. The boys were in the custody of their grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox.

Powell had denied any role in his wi...appearance, and had told police that she went missing while he took the boys on an overnight camping trip in a snowstorm. He recently told the family court judge that Chuck and Judy were not taking good care of the boys and were turning their two sons against him.

Powell lost custody on Sept. 22 after his father, Steve Powell, was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography.

He had lost custody. The kids had been brought over by a social worker for a visit. He got the kids in the house, locked the social worker out, and then killed them and himself.

disbelief I don't understand why people do this. I mean I know it's more than likely the case of "if I can't have my kids, you won't either" but it's so damn selfish. Why kill your own flesh and blood over your selfishness???? confuse

And what's up with these cases lately? I know it happens, but it seems like there's been a spike in this activity lately. A man in my city (about a couple of counties over) just killed himself and his twin girls over a custody dispute with his ex-wife. disbelief

This kinda reminds me of a case in Michigan-2 parents divorced, arguing over custody. The dad gets the kids to himself on Thanksgiving-3 darling boys-and suddenly the boys are never seen again and the father can’t come up with an explanation. The bodies aren’t found, but the dad is convicted of manslaughter, I think and now he is in jail.

The Powell case started in Utah because that is where Josh and Susan Powell lived when she disappeared. Susan had been missing maybe 9 days when Josh packed up and moved in with his father in Washington State.

Josh Powell continued to deny that he had any roll in his wife's disappearance, so unless they happen to find some evidence in the charred remains of the house, or his piece of shit father finally talks, his motive may never be known.

My heart goes out to the Cox family, (Susan's family). They worked so hard to find out what happened to their daughter and to protect their grandsons.

The men of the Powell family are and were vile. The father was caught video taping neighborhood girls and women changing their clothes and going to the restroom. Josh and the two small boys lived in the house at the time.

Steven (I think that's the dad's name) told the media that "Susan was a very sexual being. She liked it." (when he made advances towards her) etc. Just vile. Susan's friends have said that is absolutely untrue and she was very uncomfortable around her father-in-law. Josh's brother started a website just last week accusing the Cox family of deviancy etc and saying that the children were in danger in their grandparents' custody.

Josh has one sister who is estranged from the family. She sided with Cox family and said that Josh and her father were a danger to the children.

The whole ordeal is just sickening!

Steven Powell is in jail in Washington because of the images on his computer. He's been on suicide watch since he was notified of his son and grandsons' deaths.

When Steven was arrested and it started coming to light what he was doing and when he started saying the Susan came on to him and all that nonsense, I thought that Josh and his dad probably killed and disposed of her together, or at the very least came up with the plan to and Josh carried it out.

I think Susan was about to go to the police about her sicko father-in-law and husband and get her and the kids out of there. I think she made the mistake of telling Josh, so he killed her to shut her up.

My questions-

Where is Josh's mom?

I wonder if the dad ever made advances to his daughter?

Where was steven Powell videotaping these women at?

How was Josh able to move to another state if he was a murder suspect?

If Susan was to go to the police, what charges would she have filed?

The Mom is probably dead so that means everyone in that family unit is gone. So sad the children and wife had to pay for the Father's psychosis.

Just unbelievable.

Steven Powell and his wife were divorced (I think). I think she has spoken one time in all of this, but has very much stayed out of the picture.

I tried to google information about her, but came up with nothing.

I'm really not sure about Josh Powell's mother.

I know, so do I. There's been debate as to whether or not the supervised visits should have happened at Josh's home at all, but in the end, Josh is the one who committed these acts of murder.

The social worker stopped the car. The kids ran into the house, ahead of the social worker, to their dad. He locked the door preventing the social worker from getting in. She smelled gas and saw flames and that was it. She called 911, but couldn't reach them. I just pray for her. She must be heart broken.

They're reporting tonight that Josh Powell took an ax to his kids before setting the house on fire. The primary cause of death for all three was carbon monoxide.

It was a supervised visit. The laws that are being discussed as needing to be changed are regarding supervised visits.

Josh Powell was quickly found to be the primary person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, but he was never charged. He only lost custody of his kids when his father was arrested for voyeurism & child pornography while Josh & the boys lived in the same house.

Josh's cousin in TX received an email from Josh just prior to his death that implied that cyber bullying may have pushed Josh over the edge.

Maybe he just rendered the boys unconscious and the smoke killed them?

IDK...it's just what was reported on the news tonight.

They also said the house did not explode. It was reported that Powell poured gas all throughout the house. The fire got so hot, so fast that it blew out the windows, which may have been misinterpreted by the witnesses as the house exploding.

He took an axe to his children? I cannot handle stories like these. I can't begin to imagine the terror some little children experience. The betrayal they must feel right at the end, from the one who is supposed to be their source of love & protection. cry That other story back in November still shakes me to my core. A French father who murdered his 3 year old son because he put a classmate's drawing down the toilet. He wanted to teach his toddler a lesson & locked the child in the washing machine & turned it on. How can there be so much evil in this world?

Frantic 911 calls of social worker at Powell murder-suicide

Police in Washington state released a 911 call placed by the social worker who dropped Josh Powell's two young sons off before he murdered them and took his own life in a house fire. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports. By Lindsay Chamberlain, KING5 news, msnbc.com staff and news services PUYALLUP, Wash. -- Emergency calls placed in the minutes after Josh Powell killed his two young sons and then set his home on fire were released Tuesday, including one from the "traumatized" social worker who was outside the house and saw the flames. The social worker had brought Charlie, 5, and Braden, 7, to the house for their court-ordered supervised visit on Sunday. She frantically called for help as soon as she said Powell took the children and shut her out of the house. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Nothing like this has ever happened before, I'm really shocked, I can hear one of the kids crying," the woman said. "This is the craziest thing, he looked right at me and closed the door." advertisement Concerned that the children might be in a life-threatening situation, the woman also told dispatchers she smelled gas coming from the house. After the house exploded in flames, she called again. "He blew up the house and the kids!" she cried. "He slammed the door in my face!"

Excerpts from the call were obtained and broadcast Tuesday night by Washington NBC affiliate, KING5. It also spoke to the husband of the unnamed social worker, who said she was "not doing very well" despite being offered counseling. He told the station she was "devastated and traumatized" by the episode and had worked with the boys for a long time, forming a bond with them. The husband, who was also not named, told KING-5 she made a distraught call to him after the fire, repeatedly saying about the boys: "They trusted me, they trusted me."

The double murder-suicide took place days after Powell, whose wife Susan went missing in 2009, was ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation as part of a bid to regain custody of his children from his in-laws. Report: Powell left apologetic voicemail minutes before death Authorities in Washington and Utah, from where the family moved, are now effectively treating the disappearance of Susan Powell as murder, even though her body has yet to be found. MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to Chuck and Judy Cox, parents of Susan Powell, about their grandsons' deaths and their daughter's disappearance. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill acknowledged for the first time that investigators believe Powell is likely dead, but he said in an interview with the AP that the case remains a missing persons probe for now. "

I think when I talk about it as a missing persons case, that's because we haven't located the body of Susan Powell," Gill said. "Do we think that she may have met harm? Sure. I think that's been an ongoing assumption with law enforcement." Investigators said Josh Powell withdrew $7,000 in cash from a bank the day before he killed himself and his two young sons in the house fire. Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said detectives obtained Powell's bank records Monday, and on Tuesday they searched a storage unit he rented. It isn't clear what happened to the money. advertisementJosh Powell claimed that on the night Susan Powell vanished, he took Charlie and Braden from their then home in West Valley City, Utah, on a late-night camping trip. Authorities eventually searched the central Utah desert but found nothing. Susan Powell's father said that when police went to the family home after she was reported missing, they found a wet spot in the house being dried by two fans. Police have not commented further on what they found. Last September, authorities got a warrant to search the home of Josh Powell's father, Steve. Josh Powell and his sons were living there at the time. The documents obtained by the AP did not specify a suspect. In addition to the charges, the warrant listed Steve Powell's work laptop computer as well as cars that he used. Authorities found explicit images on his computers during the search, and he was jailed on voyeurism and child porn charges. The boys were later sent to live with Susan Powell's parents.

What about debris from the explosion enbedded in the bodies?

The reports in the NY Times and on the NYC news said they died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation. He used something like 10 gallons or containers of gasoline as an accelerant. The heat of the fire blew out the windows, but technically he did not plan an explosion or "blow-up" the house.

After 5 or 6 minutes on the phone, 911 dispatcher told the social worker that he didn't know when people would get there, they had to respond to "emergency life-threatening" situations first. rolleyes She was like, "This could be life-threatening...I'm afraid for their lives!" Who knows if it could have made a difference if they had sent someone instead of arguing with her...

They were there because of a court order.

You can't sue the court.

I cried when I heard about this. I knew he would eventually kill those kids once they started talking about what happened to their mother. I think also they would have talked about what the grandfather was doing. My opinion has always been that Josh killed Susan because she was not only leaving him and taking the kids but that she was probably suspecting her father in law of molesting her kids. Remember Powell Sr is being investigated for his kiddie porn stash. That family was fucking nuts. Josh was a selfish ass bastard; he should have just killed himself.

She had no evidence of domestic violence.

She said she was afraid for their lives.

Sounds like the dispatcher probably thought she was being a drama queen.

She works for CSP so she knows from experience what is what. STOP.

Isn't each situation specific unto itself?

This had never happened to her before so there was no 'experience' for her.

She is not at fault. Josh Powell is.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Point stands. Domestic violence is still not taken as seriously as it needs to be by the authorities.

What authorities ignored it?

The dispatcher is not 'the authorities.'

The anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church intends to picket the funeral of the two Powell boys murdered Sunday by their father, blaming their deaths on Washington state's legalizing of same-sex marriages, The News Tribune in Tacoma reports.

Occupy Seattle plans to counterdemonstrate.

Gov. Chris Gregoire is likely next week to sign the measure, which finished clearing the Legislature on Wednesday.

Margie Phelps, daughter of the Westboro Baptist Church's founder, tweeted Wednesday night that members of the small Topeka church will be at the Saturday morning service for Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5. She wrote that the protest is to "remind" Gregoire "they died because of her rebellion," a reference to her support of same-sex marriages, the paper writes.

Later, in a tweet referencing a news story about legalizing same-sex marriage, Phelps wrote, "This is why God's cursed you w Josh Powells blowing up kids."

This is a blessing in disguise. By doing to Straight America what has been done to us, this could change the minds and hearts of those who might otherwise engage in homophobia.

disbelief If this is true then this is the lowest this CULT has ever sunk. Josh Powell killed his wife and its obvious that nothing would have stopped him from killing himself and his children once he made up his mind to do so. The fact that this cult uses God's name for their own devlish acts is disgusting and I hope the day they decide to protest, somebody fuckin' shoots them! Enough is enough already. They need to put down the crack pipes.

Though I doubt they'll have the funds to show up, but who knows. Y does the media keep catering to these people I wanna know? Free advertisement so those few cruel people in the world can keep donating money to their "cause". Y are these folks banned to the world of obscurity so they can die out.
