I am all for it! Even in public. I bet most of the time it is happening, most people never notice.
Some say "keep the baby at home" really? until a he is year or two or older? (as the WHO says is best for the baby)
Some say "go to the bathroom" but how often do they eat in a bathroom?
Some compare it to peeing and pooping: the issue here is you can not pee or poop in the open without making a mess. Breast feeding leave no puddles or piles. AND most places have restrooms for public use.
Some say "pump" really? so who is going to pay for that? out of the breast it is free. decent pumps cost over $100...and then bottles and the rest.
it is eatting, it is what they are made for.
If you do not want to see it, do not look. I am sure just as good a case if not better could be made for burn victims being allowed in public. Or people that need to be tube fed... it is pretty sad when a person's discomfort is an excuse to exclued a person from being able to be in public.
(the stupidest thing I ever heard about breastfeeding in public is "it is an outside food or drink..." to which i would say "oh do you sell human breast milk?" (i guess ordering a child's milk would also work)

I breastfeed my babies... I also was discreet in public because it does make people uncomfortable to whip your tit out in public whether you like it or not... I covered up as a sign of respect to others.... It doesnt matter whether its the most "natural" thing a woman can do, it still isnt accepted to be nude in public... period... Like it or not, america is uptight... I dont agree with ALOT of laws, but I dont go breaking them just because I dont like them....
If I were to masterbate in public, Id be arrested... Theres no mess, I wouldnt be bothering anyone.... just me and my fingers... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

i fed my own babes cuz it's the healthiest option & mums want to do the right thing. i don't remember enjoying the process.. the leaking, squirting & big bras & pads, messy business and i didnt want share the experience with anyone if i could help it., so i don't want to see anyone dragging out their knockers in a resztaurant even though i'm not looking, the idea of all that guzzling on bodily fluids makes me wanna chuck up. possibly i have post trauma stress

As a gay man the whole concept of sucking on breasts is gross to me. But to be totally honest, I don't care if a woman breast feeds in public or not. I'm very liberal. I still think it's gross though. But I would never say anything to a woman because it's her right.
And breasts ARE sexual whether we want to admit it or not. That's why a baby can suck his mom's tits at McDonalds but as soon as the husband goes in for some milk they are both sent off to prison. The son and the father enjoy the same activity...what are ya gonna do??
I saw someone a few days ago wiping their child's ass in the produce section of the grocery store. Now that is really disgusting! "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

Why can't they simply use a breast pump at home and come prepared with an emergency bottle of milk? [Edited 1/20/12 9:19am]

I know of a woman who was still letting her son breast feed until he was 5 or 6
We were at a little picnic playing cards and in the conversation she came out with it like it was nothing.
She said, she'd be laying down or sleep and the boy would come in open her blouse and suck

Because some women take it too far. I was on the Metro train once and this woman was letting her 3 or 4-year old kid lift up her moomoo dress duck under and latch on for a few seconds to get a drink. If she still wanted her toddler to drink breast milk fine, but this is just inappropriate in a public setting. I have no problems with infants being fed and moms who at least try to be discreet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

several reasons:
1) pumps are not free. nor are the bottles and storage devices.
2) pumping is not as effecent as direct feeding
3) so the have to feed and pump enough just in case?

I breastfed my daughter and tried to be discreet. I don't know if I always was. I am sure that I flashed a few people unknowingly. Back in victorian days women breastfed all the time but capes and capelets made it very easy to do so. The easiest way to be discreet is to find a poncho or capelet that is kinda cute to tuck the baby's head under. A blanket or shawl slips and has to be readjusted. (breast feeding my baby in a feces smelling bathroom was not something I wanted to do. Plus I liked sitting and few places have a chair to sit on in their bathroom beside a toilet). There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Plus if a baby has not been introduced to a bottle teat by 6/7 weeks or so they will get confused & won't easily swap. [Edited 4/23/12 6:08am]

The only problem I have with it, is that now, after breastfeeding 3 babies, it is going to take thousands of dollars to fix what they have broken. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

Do you have any idea what a fucking pain in the ass that is??? We already feel like cows around the clock. It is soooo exhausting. To have to sit there and PUMP yet. Ugh. I HATE PUMPING. Anyway. That being said, I took my kids everywhere, and never bf'd in public. I always went into a restroom or out to the car, or dressing room or something. I never felt comfortable just sitting out nursing, but I don't care if others do it. I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure

Identity said: Why can't they simply use a breast pump at home and come prepared with an emergency bottle of milk? [Edited 1/20/12 9:19am] I was told by the midwives the best thing to do is not to mess with the supply and demand cycle the baby establishes by pumping. I had enormous supply of milk and if my baby cried I'd let down and leak all over the place even if my baby might be drinking from a bottle instead. Not only that, but because suckling from a rubber teat is much less work for a baby than a real nipple it happens that they come to prefer the bottle, which may not be the best outcome for mother or child. a whore in sheep's clothing

I breastfed both of my babies, and I could ot imagine doing anything else. Its handy, its always clean, its the perfect temperature, its good for the baby and its comforting to them.
I did feed them in public a few times but very discreetly. I would never expose my breast to others nor would I do something stupid like sit in the front row of a school play. Aiming not to be the center of attention, in my opinion was essential. Also, wearing clothing that made it possible to be discreet was essential. A breastfeeding bra and feeding friendly top make it so that one can appear to just be holding a baby. A blanket draped over makes it impossible to know what is going on.
And for those complaining that women should pump, perhaps you do not understand. When the baby cries, the milk flows. Pumping can also cause an unwanted increase in milk production. Pumping requires electrical power, storage, refrigeration, freezing, thawing......its a pain in the ass.
Now...those with kids walking around sucking on boobs in public disgust me.

I've never breastfed a child before as I don't have kids but I'm not bothered by anyone that does it. If they want to do it in public, that's their business. But don't get pissed when people stare at you doing your business.
And on the flip side, don't get mad at me when I decide I DON'T want to breastfeed, in public or not. That's MY business. Shake it til ya make it
