Mysterious eggs rain on Alaska

Orange goo in Alaska identified as tiny eggs, origin unknown

Officials say further investigation is needed

After a week of speculations and concern, the orange goo found in a small rural town in Alaska has been identified. Scientists have determined the mysterious substance found throughout Kivalina to be millions of microscopic eggs, filled with fatty droplets, however the mystery is still unfolding.

The Associated Press reported that officials have not yet positively determined the species of the eggs which is cause for concern for the approximate 375 residents of Kivalina.

According to the AP, "Officials

with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] said Monday they don't know for sure what species the eggs are, although they believe they are some kind of crustacean eggs or embryos. They also don't know if the eggs are toxic."

Kivalina is essentially self-sufficient because of the village's far remote area, about 650 miles northwest of Anchorage. Not knowing whether or not the orange goo has contaminated local water supplies or food sources are serious worries. Residents are worried their region could be afflicted with poisonous microscopic residues.

The mystifying orange goop first appeared last week, but by two days later had turned powdery.

Concerns about the unusual substance was that it may have partially arrived airborne since, in addition to being found in the harbor, some samples were found in water buckets, and there was a report of some found on a resident's rooftop.

The LA Times reported an interview with a lead chemist at NOAA, "We now think these are some sort of small crustacean egg or embryo, with a lipid oil droplet in the middle causing the orange color," said Jeep Rice. "So this is natural. It is not chemical pollution; it is not a man-made substance."

Experts had ruled out man-made or petroleum based substances based on earlier testings.

While the substance is now identified, leading scientists do not know the origin of the eggs, which is more pause for concern as this mystery begins to unfold. People are questioning where they came from and why they appeared so suddenly as the orange goo is a new phenomenon. No one seems to know what kind of life form made these eggs.

Additional labs will be evaluating these microscopic eggs to try and garner more information. NOAA in Charleston, S.C., and the Institute for Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will also be examining these samples closely.
