Help with vertigo?

Spells of vertigo are very scary and debilitating. Last year was the first time it happened to me. I woke up one morning and literally could not lift my head from the pillow it was so bad. My son called 911 and I spent a couple of days in the hospital for tests, but they didn't find the cause and it went away after a few days.

It started happening again a couple of weeks ago, so last week I was hospitalized again for a couple of days, but after having the MRI, eeg, ecg, etc, they still don't have an definitive answer to give me. I'm scheduled for more tests with the cardiologist, the neurologist and the ent specialist.

Besides the dizziness, I've been having this weird feeling that I call balloon-head, plus headaches and some occasional numbness in the feet and hands. Of course, things like aneuryism and stroke cross your mind, but nothing like that has been detected.

This time it isn't going away, sad

Has anybody here had a similar problem or know of anyone who has?

Not that I know of. I spent hours online researching different things but it seems so common and so many things can cause it that pinpointing the cause is difficult.

sigh

I'm going to write down more things to ask about.

pat I suffer from it too from time to time and my doctor did not tell me much. Apart from that I should get tested for MS sometime, but probably mostly because my dad had it.

Thanks. How often do you get it and is it debilitating or just lasts a few seconds?

That time when I went to the doctor it was extremely bad for some minutes or maybe half an hour. Everything seemed to move around me although I was lying in bed without moving at all and I felt terrible. I somehow managed to get up then trying to not move my head at all and it very slightly got better and it took maybe 2 days when I still tried to not move my head until I felt kinda okay again.

I remember that my dad had similar symptoms, so you should ask your doctor to rule out MS when you have it more often. Maybe they already ruled it out with your tests anyway.

What you're describing isn't vertigo - it's labyrinthitis. You can control it with medication. It's an inner ear imbalance. Google it. My dad suffers from the condition and it is a bastard - yet very simple to remedy.

Good luck getting diagnoised. Ive been dizzy for 11 yrs only to be told i had MAV (migraine associated vertigo) labyrinthitis, anxiety, low blood preasure, & a mild case on Menieres.

I dont know what to think anymore..but im leaning towards the menieres b/c my symptoms are the same.

I try to watch what i eat as certain things can aggrivate it...salt, caffiene...stress confused

& for the nausea...take gravol or ginger candys.

They haven't ruled that one out yet...I have an appt. with an ent doctor next week. It's a bit less scary than some of the other possibilities.

I'm only on round two...sheesh! I hope it doesn't take 11 years. eek

The funny thing is, I've had absolutely no nausea so far.

I thought about blood pressure because of the balloon-head feeling but my pressure checks out fine. I have some ginger, so thanks for the tip...it can't hurt.

thanks and best wishes to Mom.

I've suffered from virtigo for about 20 years. Babynoz, I'm sure your GP will or has sent you to a Head, Eye, & Throat doctor and/or neurologist so they can perform a series of test to diagnose and/or eliminate what maybe causing your vertigo. In my case, I was in 8 to 10 % of the population . . they don't know why I have vertigo; it runs in my family and I also suffer from time to time migraines. One test, they stuck electrodes on my head and body and induced vertigo; you could have an inner ear problem or an infection.

I take mechlinzine hydrochorige (Antivert) to control mine; they have several other medications on the market. I have a family member for which Antivert doesn nada, but diphenhygramine (Benadryl) works.

That sounds very similar to my problem...I have a history of migraine too. I'm doing all the tests now to rule out any serious causes and the meclizine has helped a little.

So far, it looks like there's no quick and easy solution.

I had it once 4 two days in 1995. I could not even stand up. They never did find what caused it but the doctor said it may resulted from water in my ear. That was scary because I literally could not stand up without falling.

Yeah, I had a couple of those episodes. Like you, one morning I woke up and lifted my head off the pillow and immediately fell back. I was scared shitless. I couldn't get up without falling back and the room swimming. Finally I was taken to the emergency room and they couldn't find anything wrong with me. Eventually I had tests and found that a tumor in my thyroid was pressing against my carotid artery. Had the tumor removed and have had no more problems. Not saying that's what's wrong with you, but check it out.
