How to hide facial piercings I want to get my nose and eyebrow pierced but I go to chruch and my job also, so does anyone have any stories and tips they could tell me on how they covered their piercing, etc. I'm in the mood for love...simply because your near me.

Ex-Moderator | Why would it matter for church? It's not ungodly or immoral.
As for your job, I'd ask your boss or HR what their regulations are. I wear a nose piercing everyday and I'm in a professional position. I managed a movie theatre with a big ring in my nose 15 years ago as well, back when it was still kind of a big deal. It depends on your employer. |

Facial piercings are so 2001. Take them out and "express" yourself in some productive way.

So you already know it will be an issue with work but plan on getting them anyway.
I'm still not getting the church thing.

I couldn't take my nose piercing out for more than an hour for more than a year after I got it without it closing up. |

I still don't get the concern with church (then again I don't really get church) but it would be a bit clearer to me.

Please let her see this thread Does your workplace or place of worship not allow them? Okay---confession time I'm not a baptized Jehovah's Witness but I'm studying to become one, and I would probably get 'talked to' for the piercing etc. Works a little differently with the hall VS Chruches etc. [Edited 4/6/10 19:24pm] I'm in the mood for love...simply because your near me.

My first instinct is to bitch slap whoever it is that can't mind their own business. Piercings do not affect your ability to work, and I'm sure God isn't overly concerned with them either. But obviously that's a bad idea. As far as jobs go, consider and weigh the likelihood of getting hired with facial piercings. This varies a lot from region to region and from industry to industry. Where I live, it's not uncommon to see a bank manager with his septum pierced, but that's not going to fly everywhere. As for church? Pierce away. A church that rejects parishoners based on their appearance is no church at all. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Let me guess...you're doing it because Prince is one, right? Or that MJ was raised as one? Any religion that tells you what not to wear when it comes to an earring or a pair of shoes isn't a religion I'd want to be a part of. Grow up and get your own sense of being, not someone elses. You're already wanting get something that you know is going to cause friction elsewhere. Either you WANT the drama and you'll guise the drama as "expressing" yourself, or you're just confused about who you are inside. Putting a hole in your lip isn't going to help you find out who you are inside. It's only going to make you dribble when you drink.

I smell a rat with this thread, but I'm going to do a couple of responses anyway.
I left the church I was raised in because of a situation like this. My paternal granddad started a church with four other families about 60+ years ago. The church grew to one of the largest Independent Baptist churches in the Oklahoma City area. I was born and raised in that church. Ernest, II, III and myself were all members there. The Sewell's were just as present there as anyone else. We didn't run the place, but we knew our roots there. When I came home from the Navy in 1989, I was happy to return to the church to see friends. I wasn't even 21 yet, and wanted to reconnect with friends. I was a mediocre homecoming. A couple of weeks back home, and I got my ear pierced. I walked to my Sunday School class (these were all 18-24 year olds, except the 40 and 50 something teachers), and you would have thought I was invisible. People who knew me from when I wore diapers all but ignored me. What once was "Good morning!" was "oh, hello....." The same thing happened to my friend Ricky when he got his ear pierced a few weeks after I did. Ignored him totally. I knew then I was never going back to that church. A week later, I went to Gym night. It was a Tuesday or Wednesday or something, and the gym behind the church (it was HUGE) opened up and a lot of us would gather and play volleyball inside. I went with my earring. Half way into the evening, some old guy who I'd never seen before stopped all the game playing, and recited some rules about obtrusive jewelry and safety or something. He was obviously talking about me as no one else barely had a wrist watch on. I didn't take out the earring and ignored what he said in general. I never returned to that church. That was the summer of 1989. My mother thought I exaggerated the story when I later relayed it to her. Over time, she's come to realize just how hard core that church is on things, and how ridiculous it has become. One quick verse from the Bible, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, THERE is liberty." I realized there was no Spirit of God there, nor was there freedom. I've never set foot in a Baptist church since.

More than once I've sprung a leak by not being careful when I'm drinking. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

there must be a reason why it's frowned upon at your church - probably that would be showing too much individuality or thinking for oneself for their liking? Or "self-mutilation" is a sin?

Why are people still stuck on this? Piercing is merely a means of decoration for most people. It's no more an attempt at self-expression or rebellion for most of us than what colour t-shirt we've got on. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I think overt decoraction comes from a lack of self-worth, and the need for some attention, whether it's a glance from a stranger, or even someone confronting a piercee by saying "Why is that in your eye brow?" Besides, most lip pierces are retarded looking, and I've yet to see one that adds anything to a person's beauty. Yes, I get it, it's different, it's out of the norm, but whatever. Wear two different shoes for fuck's sake. But leave the jewelry out of a cheek or a lip. It's gross.

But if they allow earrings, what's the difference? If an eyebrow hoop is counted as self-mutilation, then logically wouldn't Ethel the Organ Lady's cat-inspired "folk art" earrings also be? An unnatural hole is an unnatural hole, innit? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Whether something is outside of the norm IMO falls into the category of being a regional cultural variation. Like I've said before, in Vancouver it's not unsual to see a bank manager or university professor or real estate agent with facial piercings or visible tattoos. I can certainly see how being pierced when you live in an area where it's less common could be and probably is a scream for attention. But when your History professor and boss have more metal in their body than you do I don't think that's the case. One of my bosses at a former workplace used to casually go out and get new piercings on her lunch breaks, no joke. Around here it's really no big deal. Piercing really is just another fashion choice, and usually isn't presented or interpreted as anything more. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
