World's Tallest Building Opens

It's called The Burj Khalifa and is in the Middle East in a place called Dubai. It is 160 stories high and almost twice as tall as The Empire State Building. This building is beautiful.

That's crazy. It's not just a bit higher, it's way higher, like nothing we've ever seen before from any structure.

everytime a building is taller than the last tallest building? that's happening all the time though confuse and Dubai had loads more planned, taller than this one, though I think their money dried up.

it looks nice but it's always funny to me when they build shit like this it costs so much and it's so much better spend on helping the country. Same with building a runway 20 something millon and they be like thats nice, we didnt really need it but we did just spend 20 fucking million. lol

It's a good thing hybrid cars are catching on, because that building is going to suck up all the energy saved by them.

What´s so great about having the highest tower when your country needs to borrow money from Abu Dhabi and when all thetechnology, all the engineers and architects who built that tower are from other countries? I couldn´t be proud of that.

True. But the Statue of Liberty is more symbolic, more of an icon than an achievement....and everybody knows it´s a gift and not American made.To brag about having the highest building is a whole different issue though.

I've always said they need to get to work rebuilding those twin towers, bigger, taller, and badder. Build them 200 stories high. The New York skyline just looks "average" without. It just doesn't look nearly as impressive as it used to without them.

the statue of liberty is awesome, because the French saw America's vision as something worthy of recognition and gave us this incredible gift that represents the best of what this country is.

America is flawed, but has its merits. And the French do too, because that is an amazing gesture!

From the Telegraph, UK:
http://www.telegraph.co.u...tless.html
Burj Khalifa: German architects brand world's tallest building 'pointless'

The huge glass and tower "hardly represents a sustainable contribution to current world building practices," said Christian Baumgart, president of German architects' association DAI.

While architecture in Europe valued refurbishing and upgrading existing buildings rather than building vast new developments, "Nobody knows where the planning hubris of the sheikhs will lead," he said.

Meinhard von Gerkan, who designed Berlin's central train station, said the building, which opened to great fanfare earlier this week, was a "pointless" symbol of power and prestige.

It was no surprise that the tower had been erected in Dubai rather than somewhere like the US, "where rationality (..) plays a greater role than the need to demonstrate power," he told Deutschlandradio Kultur.

The Burj, which reaches more than 2000 feet into the sky, would suffer from astronomical maintenance costs and would never make a profit, he warned.

The building was designed by British architect Adrian Smith. It has 160 floors, using 330,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and103,000 square meters of glass.

It is some 300 metres taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.

it's strange though they had to go and change it's name last minute. it was called Burj Dubai (Dubai Tower).

Riiiight rolleyes

Lets all pretend that the long history of self-absorption and arrogance of Western civilization never existed lol

When Americans and Europeans do it, its understandable. When Arabs do it, they're "wasting money" shrug rock steady baby,,,lets call this shit exactly what it is.

It is a huge achievement, considering that Dubai was damn near a rural state 20 years ago. Nothing and nobody can take this from them, they may have lost alot in the process but I don't think it'll be the end of the road for them.

I say good for Dubai.
