You just have to know how to take care of it. The edges of my head are short. I have no idea how to grow it. Back, front and sides....everything else is long.

That "Wild Growth" stuff my sister uses really works. Her hair was so thin on the sides, she looked like she had a mohawk. Now she has edges. nod

Thanks!!!

But here's the thing about many "Re Grow" products: They are basically the SAME formula as Rogaine for Women BUT it's repackaged, renamed and rebranded for black women and sold for twice as much as the original Rogaine but works the same. Ain't nuthin but game.

ok before the flaming begins let my explain lol

im a black girl and my own hair is short and its pretty much been the same length as it was when i was a young girl boxed and i have noticed this with some other black females whom i grew up with and their hair is pretty much the same length its always been which is short

so for a long time i have had the impression that black womens hair doesnt grow or it grows but it just doesnt grow as long as other womens hair and when a black woman does have long hair other black women want to claim that its not real or its a weave eek neutral

someone care to clarify this? can black women grow their hair just as long as other womens hair or what?

and if your hair is long can you give me some tips because ive been trying to get my hair to grow for a long time lol

lol Not laughing at you, just the question. The answer is 'YES" My mom has had hair down to her ass forever. She's much older now and now it has thinned, but still grows long. There seems to be this stereotype that Black women can't grow long hair. Look at Oprah, that is all her hair. All it takes is taking care of your hair Constant curling and flat irons can damage the hair and cause breakage. Perming, if not done right, can also damage the hair, and that's not limited to just Black women. You need to get orger "Paintedlady" in on this conversation, as she is a hairdresser..

Years ago many Black women wore their hair in a natural state, no chemicals, and the hair was much more healthier and grew longer. There really wasn't any hair products for Blacks on store shelves. Then when there were, they weren't the best products to be honest. In my opinion, it really wasn't until the mid 80s that you started seeing better hair care products on the shelves, for women of colors.

Secondly, Black people have various textures of hair, so you cannot lump them in one pot. You have Blacks with coarse/very tight, what is often referred to as nappy hair, wavy, curly hair and even straight textures. It's all about how you take care of your hair.

NO No No No - it's not hmph! mostly she wears pieces and falls- not to say that "her" hair isnt healthy and long- she def does not abuse it everyday with the heat it would take to maintain those styles.

Exactly. Sometimes she wears her own hair but most of the time she doesn't. She'd be bald if she was styling her hair for TV EVERY day.

At the moment she is only wearing her natural hair though. Reggie took her back to a basic press and curl. You can't see it on this clip, but on the "Good Hair" show featuring Chris Rock, they showed us photos of what she looks like before she goes into the hair and make-up chair, she has that long puffball hair that Rudy Huxtable had on The Cosby Show when she was 7 lol . I was cracking up watching Chris Rock checking her Oprah's head for tracks; he was all flabbergasted when he realized there were none lol

Yeah, but hasn't Reggie been gone for a few years now? And even when he was around she routinely wore pieces to rest her hair. Even doing a press and curl EVERY day would damage her hair. It's still too much stress on a daily basis.

My bad. I get them mixed up, I'm so damned tacky I meant Andre and not Reggie. Andre is still around, and while she has worn pieces in the past she is sans attachments now. Her hair is not pressed every day, but touched up with bumper curlers in between wash & pressings.

The thing I always wonder is, what did the old school daily news divas used to do back in the day before weaves became popular in the 1980's? If you didn't have a relaxer or naturally straight hair, I wonder if they subjected themselves to the daily torture of those red and blue handled gas heated curling irons,or if they just did the "wrap the ends with tissue paper before putting on sponge rollers then wrapping up your hair at night" thingy? hmmm

And how you take care of your hair. It is not just genetics.

Delicate, damaged hair will break once it gets to the shoulders. Strong, healthy, nourished hair is less likely to break off at the shoulders, especially if it is protected at night by a silk scarf to minimize pulling and tugging by sheets and pillowcases. Healthy, nourished hair means not putting damaging chemicals in it, not abusing it, moisturizing it properly (with proper, natural moisturizers) and a balanced, nourishing diet.

peace

True but I'm referring length of hair.

hmm

So was I. lol

Hair that breaks off at the shoulders doesn't grow long.
It's what you make it.

i just checked into this thread and the question probably been answered over and in abundance but lemme say

moisture is needed for Afro textured hair (if that's indeed what you got)

the problem is breakage. your hair grows at the same length as anybody else but it breaks off faster due to several causes: lack of moisture, protein, chemicals such as dyes and relaxers and weak tensil strength from over pulling and lack of a trim to cut off the dead and splitting ends. Also, a misconception is that black hair should not be shampooed everyday like straight hair. Nothing could be further from the truth.

What I would recommend is that you invest in hair care products that focus on moisturizing the hair and not coating it. Fuck all that grease shit. It clogs your scalp pores and coats the hair but does nothing for growth. You need cream based products but steer clear of anything that says "protein" because too much protein dries the hair and causes what? BREAKAGE!!

Trim your hair. Also, if you are going to use a relaxer....USE LYE! All that no-lye shit is bogus. It's only good for hair that is semi-curly. LYE relaxers get the hair straight by breaking down the bonds whereas no-lye doesnt'. Think ironing a shirt and still ending up with wrinkles.

Ima BRB...gotta hit up my cousin cuz she is a stylist and knows all this shit and educated me. Her hair is down her back too. biggrin

she not home. but i will get more hair care scoop. oh another thing...you know afro textured hair grows long...just look at folks who wear it dreaded. biggrin

things to avoid:

rubber bands
wearing weaves or braids or bonds too long
peroxide (unless your hair is otherwise chemical free. you cant do relaxer and blonde hair together).
no products with metalic salt. (i dunno what that is but my cousin told me to avoid them like measles)
check your nails. if your nails are thin, brittle, tear easily then the problem with your hair (and nails) is dietary. eat lots of fruits, veggies, drink water and avoide caffeinated drinks which are dehydrating and get plenty calcium and keratin in your diet. make sure you take your calcium with vitamin C which helps the body absorb it,
