Hard drive recovery....anybody have an opinion?

My external drive locked up and now appears blank when I try to access it...anybody know of a good software for recovery or suggested companies for sending this to that might be able to recover the data?

PC...and we did install it in the PC to see if it would communicate...it didn't...well actually it said it had 160GB of free space and nothing could be written to it...typical....

If it's a mechanical failure, you're pretty much out of luck. If the disks can't spin, nobody will be able to get data off of them without it costing a small fortune. But if it showed up on the PC after the lock up, it may be an intermittent failure. The bearings may be going. Let it cool down and try again in another external case. If it starts working, make sure it stays cool by aiming a fan at it and don't over tax it.
