NeNe Leakes: ‘Tardy for the Party’ Was My Song

The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s self-proclaimed “H.B.I.C.” (head b– in charge) says she’s not friends with any of the other women on the show. Instead, she calls Kim Zolciak, Sheree Whitfield, Lisa Wu Hartwell and Kandi Burruss “associates,” something she says they’re lucky to be. “Some people don’t even get to be my associate, so they’re in a very good position,” she said in Los Angeles at a recent signing of her book, Never Make the Same Mistake Twice: Lessons on Love and Life Learned the Hard Way. Leakes spoke with PEOPLE about her her goal to have a talk show, why all press is good press and what she thinks about the song “Tardy for the Party.” –Tiffany Matloob

What’s your relationship with Kim and Sheree like these days?
We’re just associates. I feel we have a business relationship. However, Sheree and I have known each other the longest and we’ve found a way to respect one another. And Kim and I just haven’t found that yet. And if Kim and I weren’t on the show together, we probably would never talk. But we’re on the show, so we have to talk and we have to be cordial, so we’re cordial. But I’m not friends with any of these girls. They’re my associates, and I don’t think that the word “associate” is a bad word. Some people don’t even get to be my associate, so they’re in a very good position.

So you’re not friends with anyone in the cast?
Down the road with some time, Lisa and I could possibly be friends. I don’t really know Kandi at all but I won’t close the door on that. I’m just saying I don’t know her because she’s new to the show. We didn’t get a chance to really get to know each other. She came into our relationship. I feel like I’m the HBIC [head b-- in charge] if you know what that is.

If you could give your advice to the other women, what would it be?
What you have to do is build and brand and you have to take advantage of everything that you have in front of you. It’s a blessing and a curse. The curse is that people are digging in your business and these reporters are writing things that are not true. But it’s a blessing because you get to do things like … have a book put out across the country.

What else would you like to accomplish?
My long term goal is to one day have my own talk show or maybe even a radio show … Since I’ve been here in California, I’ve had TV shows that are talking to me but it has to be the right thing because I live in Georgia. That is so far for me to move my husband and kids, so it really has to be worth my while. I need a big, nice, fat check.

How do you deal with the “curse” or rumors that are spread about you?
I love when they talk about me. I get real weird when they ain’t saying nothing about me. I say, “They didn’t say anything about me this week? I got to step my game up.” The more they talk honey, that really puts you out there.

Are you singing on Kim’s song “Tardy For The Party?”
Well it’s Kim [with] Kandi’s help. Kandi changed it from country to dance and so Kandi has a lot of beats going on in the back so you can’t really hear her … It’s not about the vocal — it’s more about the beat. When you are singing country, it is more about the voice. I can’t wait for you guys to see that episode. I think you guys are going to feel for me. “Tardy For The Party” was my song. Now she’s doing “Tardy For The Party,” and I’m not on it. I don’t care if I’m not on it.

Who’s fashion show was better, Lisa’s or Sheree’s?
I never talk about these girls. I’m just going to say Gucci can’t talk about Louis, honey.

Would you buy anything from their clothing lines?
I would. I bought a T-shirt from Lisa’s [collection]

Real Housewives: Kim Sings & Takes a Tumble

Kim brought some blood, sweat and tears to Thursday’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. The blonde was literally at the center of the drama as she triumphantly conquered her fear of singing in public and stepped back into the studio to record Kandi’s revamped version of “Tardy for the Party” only to take a bloody tumble later at a black-tie party in honor of the ladies’ alter-ego photo shoot.

Kim thought she was heading to Kandi’s house to hang out, but Kandi had other plans: She wanted Kim to record vocals on “Tardy for the Party,” which the singer had refashioned into a club-friendly track. After a slow start — and plenty of tears — Kim jumped in the booth and belted out the hook. Impressed with her efforts, Kandi and her team of producers applauded Kim, who grew so confident by her performance, she decided to scrap her duet partner, NeNe. “It’s my moment, and I want it to be my moment,” she said.

As for NeNe, she eagerly awaited the results of the alter-ego photo shoot that she directed. She brought along Lisa to crash in on photographer Derek Blanks at his studio and get a sneak peek. Blanks, though, wasn’t having it: Instead, he preferred to reveal the photographs at a black-tie event.

Sheree, meanwhile, was focused on fitness, working hard with her trainer, Cliff. “I have the body of a hot 25-year-old,” Sheree said, “and Cliff helps me keep it that way.” But Cliff seemed more interested in playing matchmaker, grilling Sheree about what she looks for in a man as she worked her glutes. After inviting her to see him at his bodybuilding competition, Cliff introduced Sheree to a friend. “I had no idea he was trying to hook me up,” she said, revealing her displeasure at his selection and calling the guy, “totally not my type.”

Finally, the night of the black tie bash arrived. As NeNe got made up for the bash, she was enthusiastic about singing on Kim’s song, unaware that she’d been voted out of the band! As the guests arrived, excitement reached a fever pitch. Nene promised a Derek Blanks she’d give her honest feedback.

But then Kim took a tumble. Walking out to the patio for a cigarette, the newly confident crooner broke her shoe strap and cut up her leg. So, Kim was dragged out of the party by Dwight, who was apparently living out a doctor fantasy. The fashionista dressed Kim’s wounds as she sat in the front seat of her car, legs hanging out slack and cigarette in her mouth. With the focus now on Kim, she took the opportunity to blast “Tardy for the Party” from her car speakers. Guests drifted outside more curious to see how she was faring than the actual photographs.

NeNe, meanwhile, complained about Kim upstaging her on her big night. Lisa, too, seemed nonplussed by the blonde’s injuries, bloody as they seemed. “I’m looking at her like that’s a scraped knee, girl,” Lisa said. As a solution, NeNe moved the big photo reveal outside — complaining — as the entire party had migrated into the driveway by then.

And, in the least dramatic moment of the entire hour, the photos were revealed. Turns out, everybody loved their photos as tears (of joy) were shed. –Brian Orloff

NeNe’s Ego Has Landed

Has fame finally gone to NeNe’s head? The fan favorite and self-proclaimed HBIC appeared to let the green-eyed monster get the better of her on Thursday’s episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta — and in the middle of Sheree’s independence party of all places.

Faced with Sheree’s flattering if gargantuan portrait, the news that Kim had banned her from singing on Kandi’s reinterpretation of “Tardy for the Party,” and (assuming word got around) her BFF Dwight’s rave reviews of Kandi’s performance in The Pocketbook Diaries, NeNe revealed an insecure side never before seen. The evidence? After telling Kim, “You can’t sell the song without me,” she turned her ire toward the usually unflappable Kandi, stealing Sheree’s shine in the process. Atlanta’s usual voice of reason only calmed down when reminded by a friend: “You are writing a book!”

And though the Housewives franchise is veering dangerously close to infomercial territory, the episode did provide priceless moments. Namely, the pink leggings worn by Sheree’s hairstylist, the valiant struggle of Kim’s daughter to eat a cupcake at midnight, and of course, the news of Big Papa’s return. The episode opened with Kim recounting to her friend Jodi how the married mogul had reentered the picture to sweep her off her feet — this time by flying her to the Bahamas and kick-starting more chardonnay-fueled bauble-buying.

“I like things big and gaudy and ornate,” Kim announced before laying claim to a $32,000 necklace, as cameras cut to her depressed-looking assistant Myliek. “Damn, I’m good-looking,” she added.

Girl, please she's fucking vicious and she's said repeatedly that none of those women are her friends. I loved when Kandi asked Kim why she allows Nene to talk crazy to her. Cuz I've been wondering about that since day 1.

I don't care how much "fun" she is, the foundation of any real friendship is mutual respect and none of these tricks exhibit that, least of all Nene. yeah, they hating, but kim is out of line because even though nene gave her a hard time about working with dallas austin she turned around and nene was the one who brought the "tardy" song to kandi. and although it wasn't kandi's call, she shoulda said something to kim about sharing with nene. especially after nene orchestrated that alter-ego deal for all of them.

Yes you said it, this show is a hot ghetto mess!!! I think after this season I won't be watching it anymore. It's starting to make my shit list where Bridezillas is at. But here's my view on the "characters" on the show:

NeNe: Is a jealous minded, egotistical BITCH who loves to think that she is this "important person" when she really is a boring hooker who should have bought a life instead. She loves to HATE HATE HATE on others when all the attention isn't on her. I saw her jealousy of Kandi coming miles away and when it finally came out on last weeks episode, I really wasn't that surprised. What I really was hoping for was for Kandi to break that bitch down and beat her ass at Sheree's party. But I guess that wouldn't had been lady like. I guess..... And how the hell is she going to get mad at Kim for not wanting her on the song when NENE SAID HERSELF that she didn't even want to be on it!!!!! Nene didn't want to be included on the song until Kandi made it hott. But I was when she was telling Kim that the song wasn't going to sell without her on it. I mean really, who told you that you were somebody??? That bitch need to back down. And yes Nene is a big ugly bitch.

Lisa: If the definition of two-faced was in webster's dictionary, then her picture should be right next to it. Lisa loves to play both sides of the fence. She goes and gives Kandi advice to stay out the Nene/Kim fiasco, yet at the "independence party", Kandi's telling her the TRUTH, that Nene said she didn't want to be on the song, but Lisa's BIG MOUTH comes out and says "oh i never heard her say that"...and just in time for NeNe to come over and LIE straight to her face and tell her that she didn't say that. I mean I really don't understand how Lisa got money when her husband was let go from the weakest team in the NFL, now her old ass trying to have another kid? The only one to step to NeNe and tell her that she really doesn't give a fuck about what she says about her behind her back. (I reallly wish Kandi would had beat her ass down, damn!) But my questions for her are: Why are you marrying that moocher with 6 kids? Girl, you need to listen to your mama. Every scene you see him in its like he was forced to be there to make someone else happy, like he really not that concerned at all about her. Marrying him will be a horrific mistake. My 2nd question is, Kandi why the hell are you even on the show? You aren't a housewife, you have a great talent, you aren't phony, you are very humble, so why the need to go on this bullshit show? And I'm so sorry how when she performed at that club in the episode last night that it seemed like the crowd really wasn't into it. The sad thing is, I know why. While it's obvious that Kandi can sing and produce, she isn't a dancer, and why is still singing songs about men who aren't worth it? I think she needs to change up her subject matter in songs and stay away from the "dirty south" beats. I mean how many more "i love him but he's no good, girl you need to leave his ass" songs do we need? If she tries something different, maybe she will be on top again, she most certainly is capable of pulling it off.

This was clearly in front of her face at her wig party when NeNe made an ass out of herself at Kim's expense. One thing is true though, when Kim finds somebody new she likes as a friend, she clings on to them like flies to shit. I was glad that she could find a friend in Kandi, but really what was up with her not showing up to Kandi's event at the club? Hope she got a good explanation for it next week. Even Sheree called Kandi and told her she couldn't make it at the very least, Kim could have done the same. Another question I have is, WHO THE FUCK IS BIG POPPA? Is he Quincy Jones? Is he Jesse Jackson? Is he Donald Trump? Who the fuck is he? And when Kim was broken up with Big Poppa, how in the hell was she able to spend $5000 on clothes for her bratty daughter? Besides that I don't really have a problem with Kim, she seems like she is fun, but she one of those ones that you have to befriend from a distance. Like if she and Big Poppa have had an arguement, she will call you crying and shit, but once they patch shit up, you won't hear or see her much. Fairweather friend is what they call it. I just wish that she would change wigs once in a while, that blond one is played out.

Kandi: The most realist one on the show. The only one who is independent and makes her own money. The only one who isn't afraid of speaking the truth. The only one to step to NeNe and tell her that she really doesn't give a fuck about what she says about her behind her back. (I reallly wish Kandi would had beat her ass down, damn!) But my questions for her are: Why are you marrying that moocher with 6 kids? Girl, you need to listen to your mama. Every scene you see him in its like he was forced to be there to make someone else happy, like he really not that concerned at all about her. Marrying him will be a horrific mistake. My 2nd question is, Kandi why the hell are you even on the show? You aren't a housewife, you have a great talent, you aren't phony, you are very humble, so why the need to go on this bullshit show? And I'm so sorry how when she performed at that club in the episode last night that it seemed like the crowd really wasn't into it. The sad thing is, I know why. While it's obvious that Kandi can sing and produce, she isn't a dancer, and why is still singing songs about men who aren't worth it? I think she needs to change up her subject matter in songs and stay away from the "dirty south" beats. I mean how many more "i love him but he's no good, girl you need to leave his ass" songs do we need? If she tries something different, maybe she will be on top again, she most certainly is capable of pulling it off.

I told ya'll last season that Big Poppa is a Middle Eastern real estate developer in Atlanta. I don't know what kinda coochie Kim is poppin' but she needs to teach a master class in that shit. She also admitted on the the aftershow that while she was broken up with BP he was still paying ALL her bills.

I saw Nene hatin' on Kandi way before last week when she was talking all that shit at the King Tut exhibit. But she took my cake when she told Kim that she can't sell the song without her BUT in the next breath said she ain't never been in a studio. Heffa, what exactly do you think you're bringing to the table???

Sheree has gotten very little if any of her settlement from her ex. He's frontin' like he broke or maybe actually is.

Lisa is a jealous, two-faced hussy. When Kandi killed her reading of the pocketbook monologue and the director and everyone else applauded her, Lisa's FIRST comment was, "Why they didn't do that for me???" Bitch, maybe cuz your ass can't take no damn direction. The director kept telling her she was reading too damn fast and Lisa was ignoring her direction.

Kandi is my girl. She has since broken up with AJ but is raising his twin 12-year old girl for the time being.
