I can't believe this Decade is almost over....

It seems like the year 2000 was just here yesterday. I often find myself thinking about the great times I had in the 90's and it's almost 2010. Damn time has been going by too fast.

I can't believe this decade is almost over, and it can't believe how bad it sucked.

I've often wondered if construction of a red lightsaber takes place before you can become a Republican, or is it something you do after initiation. Dah, well... shrug

We never did collectively settle on a name, did we?

Bowie once called this decade the Naughties. I think we should go with that.

I should have probably stopped being surprised by how many conservative, sheltered, or otherwise closed-minded folks are on the Org by now, shouldn't I?

A few days ago I was at work shooting the breeze with my friends/ coworkers. During the discussion I told how in the past 8 years I got married, went back to school, bought a house, bought a new car, took a trip across seas, had a kid, and my income doubled. A right-winger in the group basically said it was all possible because of the Republicans, that Obama was gonna take all that away confused and I'd have to wait until we got another GOP president to get it all back. confused

But I digress...yeah the music, fashion, movies, and all of pop culture in general sucked.

Despite the attention that the US terrorist attacks and the resulting wars received not too much happened during this decade in a cultural sense, did it? All the other decades had a distinctive quality to them, and it would be easy to see on the cultural products as well. This one just felt more like a continuation of the latter half of the last decade, really.

You can put on a record from ten years ago and the chances are you wouldn't be able to tell too easily whether it was released ten years ago or just last week. I'm still using Photoshop 5.0 on my computer - which is over 10 years old - and see no reason to upgrade. Most of the clothing items that people wear wouldn't have had looked so out of place ten years ago either. Scientific discoveries? What scientific discoveries? Well, they finally realized most ulcers were caused by a bacteria infection and not stress. Cars? Does anyone really prefer the models they have today over what they had ten years ago? Is the food that we eat somehow considerably different? No.

I really do feel like we've entered an age of a relative cultural standstill.

The 00s have been both the most difficult and transformative decade of my life. I'm simultaneously grateful for them and happy to move on from them.

This is the decade in which the world shrank by leaps and bounds. The internet connected everyone with the means to buy a coputer and a connection. People took and are still taking back the media with blogs and DIY journalism. Social networking has allowed us to not only not lose the people in our lives everyone before us has, old college roommates, long lost cousins, and so on, but to make new connections with people all over the world we've had had no possible way to meet even 15 years ago. Video phones became reality, not to mention exceedingly cheap, instead of being relegated to sci-fi fantasy.
It's the www decade. Sure, it started earlier, but it really hit it's stide and came into it's own in this decade.
