I had a friend whose middle name is Shaniqua. She will not reveal her full name. Sometimes she just gives her name and says she has no middle. It is totally embarassing to her.

lol I used to hate my first name...I still don't like telling people it.

"Ghetto names" transends color & race...it's all about ignorance.

In Honduras and more recently the Dominican Republic, they passed (or tried?) legislation to make it illegal to name kids all retarded.

One example in Honduras, a family that had visited the states and saw a name on th eside of a truck named their kid Usmail.

...as in... U.S. Mail.

eek Good grief.

The name could be forgivable if it was actually spelled with the "dash" in it, but....

This question is what makes me feel like its not so funny....there were some real names in there that seem fine to me. Then they just took it over the edge....they are not making fun of the names but the culture...because half the shit they said isn't existent in the culture. And neither boy appeared african american...one might have been nonwhite but they were both mocking black person. That was not a joke inviting people to "laugh at ourselves", that was pure disrespect.

The unfortunate thing is, parents don't realize when they name their children obviously "ethnic" sounding names, it sets them up for adult life. Countless studies have been done that reveal that when HR and possible employers see resumes with names such as these, they are passed up for interviews twice as much as people with names like Meliss or Jason or something.

I may catch hell, BUT with the exception of the standard deviation, it happens. Boyfriend and I are in agreement now. He has already said I'm not setting my child up. Race is such an issue in America and I'm not going to make it harder or even make their race stand out on paper too.

nod I agree. I gave my children names that did not identify their RACE on paper, although my daughters name was chosen long before she was born. I knew at age 12 what her name would be....and had many reasons why. However, if the name I loved was something like Shaqwanna...I would have had to revoke that one. The ethnic middle name I gave her was a REAL ethnic name with a meaning...not some car with an "la" added to the front of it....

(duh...dumb word edit)
