Margarine or Butter .... hmmmmm !

I received this email from a friend... is this for real???

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW..the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

I don't buy margarine, but I do use butter in baking. I never use either on bread, I prefer peanut butter.

A friend I had as a child introduced me to peanut butter on a Ritz. giggle At first I was reluctant ("Ewww, peanut butter on a cracker?"), but my friend was like, "Try it, it's really good." I did, and I loved it, and started making it at home for a snack. Now Ritz has those mini crackers with peanut butter on them that you can buy at the store. I love those too, but I tend to like the bigger Ritz crackers that I put the peanut butter on myself. Bigger crackers and more peanut butter. lol

giggle Kids can be particular, no doubt about that. nod I saw that in my nephews too, when they were younger. But they seemed to get better as they got older.

But it is still artificial isn't it?

I think it's made from natural oils, not chemically modified, flax is used as one of the ingredients.
Butter is better than margarine though since it is made from animal fats, while margarine is all chemical.

Between Smart Balance and Earth Balance I would prefer Earth Balance though.

What makes Smart Balance trans fat free?
There are three key ways to avoid trans fats in spreads: 1) Lowering fat content to limit trans fats to less than one-half gram per serving, thereby qualifying to claim zero trans fat content per serving; 2) Full hydrogenation and interesterification, two separate chemical processes using heated oil with a metal catalyst which saturate the fat with hydrogen so that trans fats can't be formed; and 3) Use of natural saturates in place of partial hydrogenation or full hydrogenation and interesterification. Smart Balance uses natural saturates (palm fruit oil) and balances it with polyunsaturates from soy and canola oils. This comprises the patented, heart-healthy Smart Balance blend that we believe to be superior to other methods of avoiding trans fatty acids.

Why do you use palm fruit oil? Isn't palm oil unheathy?
There is a major difference between the oil from the fruit of the palm tree and the nut kernel that contains palm kernel oil. Palm fruit oil contains far fewer saturates and less myristic and lauric acid. Another plant source of saturated fat is coconut oil. This, too, is much higher in saturates and myristic and lauric acid than palm fruit oil. Our nutrition scientists chose palm fruit to replace hydrogenated oils as the best and lowest source of natural saturates. The palmitic acid in palm fruit oil is also an excellent aid in sustaining HDL "good" cholesterol when balanced properly with polyunsaturated fatty acids.

We can't, it's not natural, it's produced by humans. shrug
