it depends where your music was stored, if you plugged in your ipod and there was no library then yes it will wipe it.

Usually your itunes STORE account is either an apple id or yahoo id.

If your music was only on your fried pc then you will need to recover the music or i am afraid you are, what we all in England, FUCKED.

Sorry.

Basically itunes does not do anything other than index the music and look to another location for the tracks, when you download stuff it is indexed and stored but that storage location will likely be on your hard drive in your fried pc unless you are using an external device like a usb drive.

dont panic thought you may be able to get it back
similar thing happened to me the other day when my external 250 with 160gb of music croaked.
I managed to bang it in a machine and recover the music so all is not necessarily lost. Can anyone pop your machine and try it?

music you purchased remains on your iPod and is synched to the new installation (it can only be linked to 5 puters though). Music you copied (or, god forgive me, downloaded illegally) will be lost if you can't recover it from the old PC.

Your apple id is usually your e-mail address, you can recover it through this site http://www.apple.com/supp.../password/

You might need help recovering the data from your PC. Fried is a general term and I don't know if your HDD is damaged or not. Either way there are some tools (like Spinrite) which may enable you to recover some or all of the data on that old harddisk.

I used a programme called iPod copy (from Wide Angle Software) to recover my library when my computer died. The people behind that also do a programme called iPod undelete that might help. The ask Dave Taylor website points out some potential pitfalls. It took about 5-6 hours to recover my library of approx 2500 songs but worth it. Programme was very simple and set out like itunes too.
