What To Do If You're Put on Hold By 911

Weather is Nice But Snowplows are Ready

Being put on hold when you call 911 sounds like a sure way to make an emergency situation even worse.

But that is just what happened to a Mason woman and her husband last month.

Howard Ain looks at what to do if you're put on hold by an emergency operator.

LISA FLANNERY: "Mark and I pulled over. I usually keep a flare in my car and first aid kit and I had an ice pack. So we were actually the first ones to get to the accident. Both of us got on our cell phones, called 911."

At the time neither realized the other called 911.

But she's upset at about being put on hold for 5 minutes.

FLANNERY: "On hold, on hold, on hold. Everybody's starting to complain they're still on hold and then we all realized we're making the same phone calls as well like you're on hold for."

But, Flannery is concerned being put on hold could be the difference between life and death.

FLANNERY: "I watch your show all the time and I know if I want something done you get pushed aside so I said I'm going to call howard. Actually my folks in Maryland said call Howard Ain he always gets the job done so I thought I'll call Howard Ain."

So I came to the cincinnati 911 call center and learned a check showed she was on hold for about 3 and a half to 4 minutes.

LT. COLONEL CINDY COMBS: "This is not necessarily an unusual occurrence and not something we like to have routinely but we do routinely answer 90 percent of our calls within 10 seconds."

Lieutenant Colonel Combs says the number of cell phones in use these days means when there's an accident, often many call it in.

COMBS: "We don't want to discourage people from calling 911. We want people to understand when something like that happens there is a greater probability that they will have to wait."

Lieutenant Colonel Combs says if you're put on hold, don't hang up because operators are required to call you back-- which just takes up more of their time

Can I ask that any of you that made negative comments about 911 request to do a ride-along with your police department or do a tour of your citys dispatching office?

I have called twice in the last month to report accidents on the freeway that I have just witnessed, both times it rang atleast 8 times before it went to a recording of "we will be with you shortly"
Lucky for me I have not ever called while in a life and death matter, but if god forbid I ever have to, it better not go to a recording of "we will be with you shortly" and some elevator music. rolleyes

Yes, a citizen can request to ride with a police officer on his beat. Ive had a few ride with me and their perception of police work changed. I grew up in a really bad neighborhood and did not have much respect for the law as a kid. As an adult and after the military I gave it a shot and have been doing it now for nearly 12 years.

As far as busy signals for 911, just think, they do not have a hundred people sitting at the phones waiting for an emergency call. They, too, are city employees, making crap for pay and are just as understaffed as any other city position. Can you imagine all of the non-emergency call that go through that tie up the lines while a real emergency call waits.

Dont forget folks, a mile in someone elses mochasans.
