I thought this would be so stupid, but heard some really good word of mouth....


This is the future of narrative filmmaking. I could see anything from dramas to horror to comedies to documentaries using this format, and it also will help distinguish a higher eschelon of entertainment compared to what you can have in your own home... and help with the problem of piracy taking revenue until consumer technology catches up.

I see this technology of 3D presentation catching on for all stuff, just like sound did and then of course color....

Really? I've only watched a couple of documentaries in IMAX and even though they were only around 40 min long I was starting to get dizzy by the end of it. We are talking about the kind of screen that takes up your whole field of vision, right?

the main difference is the lifelike 3D. It adds a whole new layer of expression, even a reflection in water is something different in this format.

I don't care for 3D IMAX - I find it takes away from the movie more then it adds

that's what people said when all recordings went from mono to stereo in the 60's (the aural equivalent of 3D). The Beatles didn't even participate in the stereo mixdowns of some of their albums, they dind't realize just how dramatic that added dimension was... and how you can actually choreograph sound in that space.

that's also what some people said about films getting sound as opposed to silent (they felt like the art and intensity of the performance would be ruined)

that's also what some people said about color when films changed from B&W (many directors tried to hang on to B&W) Now it is a creative choice. Just like 2D will be in the future.

and now about the successful first change in pop film format... the dimension of 3D. With 3D, a scene of a character looking through an open doorway becomes much more effective and intriguing. Just a scene of two characters talking to each other becomes more involving because they seem more real.

I think many bad films were in 3D before, this is the first good pop film I know of in 3D.

3D is how you perceive the world in real life, just like color, sound, etc. Depth perception is something a lot of people take for granted. Just like how having two ears gives you dimension to sound.

I'd love to hear what you think in 15 years.

I thought the trailer looked horrible, but at work they told all of us to just go see it yesterday afternoon (I do narrative film, documentary, and animation production). The movie is actually, surprisngly good! It's written by roger avery (Rules of Attraction, Tarrantino's ex buddy ) and neal gaimen (Sandman comics).

and another note.... the movie is showing in 3D outside of IMAX, in regular theatres as well. That's a big deal for the future...

I want to see a regular best picture type drama or romance in this format. It would be incredible.

caught it last night. I loved it. The 3d effect were awesome! THe best 3d I've seen was the stuff @ Universal studios. This is def. a close second. The story was good too. Didnt see it in Imax(I bet thats really a trip), but it was good just the same. I'll prob see it again.

Read last night that Disney signed Tim Burton to direct two movies in 3D - Alice in Wonderland, and a full-length version of his short film Frankenweenie.

3D is okay by me but I'm another who doesn't care for IMAX screens. I get vertigo just walking into an IMAX theatre.

It's a movie I really want to avoid.

The 20 minutes of the last Harry Potter movie in 3d were awesome. Totally worth the trip to the Imax.

I did see U2 in IMAX, but enough said.

I've seen a few films in IMAX and you just have to sit in the last row near the top to really take it all in. The only 3D IMAX movie I've seen was Superman Returns which was only partially in 3D and I admit looked fantastic.

Nightmare Before Christmas was amazing in 3D as well, but I saw that in a regular theater.

I'll strongly consider seeing Beowulf now that the majority of the reviews are very favorable.

I was told this new system can make use of a regular single lens digital projector, so the format is more easily adapted by existing theatres (non imax) without an expensive upgrade. It might also translate to web movies and even broadcast HD. We'll see. I think it will catch on just like color, the only cumbersome "prehistoric" part is the awful glasses.

I saw the previews, I still don't get what all the fuss is about.
