So you missed out on the pre-order festivities at EB, GameStop, and Toys "R" Us, but you're bound and determined to get your mitts on one of Sony's expensive new boxes the instant it hits the streets on November 17. What do you do?

If you live near Burbank, CA, you better get a move on, because the line's already started. Though members of the queue won't have to brave the inclement weather that other parts of the country get subjected to during November, they will presumably have to forage for everything from food and water to restroom facilities. (We wouldn't want to be working the loading dock area this week, if you know what we mean.)

Reactions to the camp out range, predictably enough, from simple disbelief, wondering how these folks can afford to spend more than a week doing nothing but holding a place in line, to full-on conspiracy theories that suggest Sony is paying people to wait in line as part of some sort of twisted astroturf campaign. Whatever the truth, there are guaranteed to be more than a few disappointed souls when those 400,000 launch units disappear into homes and onto eBay.







Nintendo continues to have a hit with the Wii gaming console.
Consumers bought 519,000 Wii systems in October, according to monthly figures released by The NPD Group, helping Nintendo to regain the top-selling spot among next generation consoles. That brings total U.S. sales of the Wii to 5 million.

"Demand actually continues to increase," says Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan. "People just can't seem to get enough of it."

Microsoft's Xbox 360, which usurped the top sales spot in September fueled by the release of Halo 3, sold 366,000 — a drop from the previous month's tally of 527,800, but still higher than the spring and summer months.

In mid-October, Microsoft released an Xbox 360 Arcade model ($280) aimed at casual gamers and families which helped buoy sales, says Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg.

Halo 3 remained the top-selling video game in October with 433,800 copies sold, bringing the total to 3.7 million.

Guitar
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (with enclosed guitar, $90-$100) took the next three spots, with the Xbox 360 version selling the most (383,200), followed by the Wii version (286,300) and Sony PlayStation 2 version (271,100). "For us to see that title selling the best on our platform speaks to the fact that we are really broadening our market to that mainstream consumer," Greenberg says.

A game-only PS2 version of GH III ($50) finished at No. 8, selling 231,700. In total, GH III sold 1.4 million copies (including a version for the PS3, as well as other versions that come with soundtrack CDs).

"Guitar Hero has certainly established itself among the elite video games properties," said NPD's Anita Frazier. "Very few games sell in excess of 1 million units in their first month in market, but Guitar Hero III did easily with combined sales of 1.4 million units in only six days. Since it has broad appeal, it's also the type of game that should continue to do very well throughout the holidays."

Sales of various guitar controllers also increased monthly accessory sales, she said.

Sony's PlayStation 3 sales increased slightly in October to 121,000, increasing the system's installed based to nearly 2 million. On Wednesday, Sony chairman and chief executive Howard Stringer said that an Oct. 29 price reduction of $100 of the 80 gigabyte PS3 (to $499) and a new $399 40GB model had boosted sales.
However, the PS3 price cut's effect won't be seen in the monthly sales figures until next month, Frazier says, "so we'll have to wait until our data comes out next month to see the effect of that cut on retail sell-through of the hardware."

I just got a PS3

I've got a PS3 and a Wii. The PS3 store really is fantastic for playable demos but the Wii has WarioWare which would make Sylvia Plath giggle. To generalise magnificently, incredible imaginations, the Japanese. See how the brain operates without doctrane-based religion? Dancing kittens and flashing primary colours. Wonderful.

i got me a Wii and a 360 as well as a DS, my 360 is getting the most play at the moment as theres just so many good games coming out now, whereas the Wii....at least in Australia just like the Game Cube isnt getting all the game released here.....it really pisses me off as i was really keen to play Trauma Center, but noooo they arnt going to release it here because they "think" there isnt a "big enough market" for such a game! I really dont understand that, if you dont release something how the hell do they know!?

Luckily i have modded my DS with a SuperCard, the best thing ever! and i have access to download the roms of every game so at least im getting my revenge on Nintendo sort of

So true, but I'm so gonna get one when Guns of the Patriots comes out. I've never bought a console just for one game before, but...I guess there's a first time for everything. There's no doubt in my mind it'd be worth it. I wonder what the prices will look like by March.

All this talk about Current Generation-Bound Consoles induces depression within myself. I don't even have a functioning PS2. Let alone a freaking 60 Gigabyte Playstation 3 with Playback-Ability. Screwy, ain't it?

neither does 50% of the PS2 customer base...

I just went to my second Wii party and now I really want one but I know they’re all gone.

But when I see commercials for games that look like movies they all belong to PS3 or XBox and many of those games are not available on the Wii.

Is there a true ultimate system or does it just depend on what you like? Why is PS3 $400???

NBA 2K8 is as good as it gets. Stay away from Madden 2008 if you're into franchise mode.
