Attractive/Unattractive

I am probably at risk of not making myself clear on this thread, but I skimmed through a few channels, and came across Janice Dickinson. She has had so much surgery she is so unattractive, yet to most she still is "seen" as attractive.
Let me make myself clear here.
There are some (un)attractive people, others find are(n't).
For example, Courtney Love. Paris Hilton. Bette Midler. There must be tons.

Is it because they are in the limelight they are seen as beautiful, but really they just aren't?

Same goes for men, but that is a whole new discussion. lol
Bear with me if I am not coming across as I want to.

After evenstar's opinion, there are some who are physically attractive, yet just are NOT attractive. IMO Tom Cruise.

Famous ppl often IMO are just as attractive/ordinary/unattractive as the rest of us, but maybe ppl see them in different light, cause they are in the limelight. Celebs like Paris, Lindsay etc are very ordinary looking girls, but perhaps the glamourous reputation and lifestyle and the fact that they are famous makes them more attractive to the rest of us.. shrug

Very true. However there is definitely a world standard of beauty that even crosses all races. Fuller lips, large eyes, symmetrical features, clear skin...and basically things that people associate with youth.

Actually, I don't think that people think that those rather average looking chicks are better looking than non-famous people...I just think that people feel comfort in the familiar and lets face it...we see these chicks a lot.

Another argument is that tanned skin is attractive, yet in other countries/continents, it is just the opposite. As is skinny supermodels here to fuller women in other countries. I agree beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I am just asking, What IS attractive to YOU?

You raise a very good point that I never thought about. Familiarity.
So are you saying people who see you, me, friends see us as more attractive because we are familiar to them, rather than strangers?
Yet some strangers will find us MORE attractive as they see us for looks only and NOT personality and for who we are.

Ya, I suppose friends would see their friends as more attractive since they are so used to seeing each other so often. People tend to kind of grow on you after a while. I don't know if it has to do with personality, perhaps it has to do more with just a face you get used to.

Of course, I'm not talking about extremes here. I'm talking more about what many would consider to be "average" looking.

Is that reassuring though, or depressing? lol
I agree and disagree to an extent.
Yes, female friends may find you more attractive. But I think males would find you very attractive when you first meet them, and the more they get to know you, and you are off limits, cos you are just a friend, they will just see you as "her" or "she" and NOT the woman they first fantasised about.

I don't look at it as reassuring or depressing, to be honest.

I don't quite follow what you were trying to say about the way guys look at women though.

I see your point and I just think it's strange that ppl seem to be mesmerized by these average looking girls, when there's nothing really special about their apperiance.. Ppl always talk how gorgeous and beautiful they look.. Is their celebrity status so blinding?

We are off on a tangent, as always happens here. lol
Let me think. Haven't you male friends who have told you, they really famcied you when they first met you?
Maybe still do.
I suppose even here on the Org and other sites, people are drawn towards you and first find you so attractive, but once you have established friendship, then they see you as a beautiful friend rather than a sex object.
I am SO getting away from what I really wanted to get at, initially on this thread, so I best stop now.
lol

Oh come on, Nicole Kidman is very good-looking. So is Lindsay Lohan who was mentioned earlier. Maybe they belong to the category of women who are appreciated by men but not by other women?

I agree, very good looking, but without the fame, put her in chainstore clothes and regular hairstyle, makeup, woold you second glance her in a shopping mall?

Well of course I couldn't be 100% sure since I've never encountered that scenario, but I think I would look twice, yeah. They have very nice features and I almost always appreciate that despite any flawed "presentation". It's like in old American college movies when a girl was supposed to be transformed from the ugly duckling to a real beauty; I always thought they were beautiful before the transformation too despite braces, poor hairstyle etc, thanks to their nice basic features.

I agree. She may be attractive, but many will see her as gorgeous, because of WHO she is, and how the make up artists, stylists etc dress her. AS MANY.
Lily Cole. Kate Moss.
This is the whole point of my thread. I didn't know how to word it properly, so I knew it was doomed after I posted it, but I had a conversation with friends earlier, and it comes across as better in conversation with a drink (as it does), than typing it in words. lol

The Barbie-Doll types don't do it for me. I like long dark hair, medium brown-to-dark skin, and lots of curves.
